I am 3 weeks post removal and I am still experiencing aches and pains throughout my body, still have the 10lb weight gain, some mood swings and extreme tiredness and some periodic bloating...I am fed up! I have 2 questions: Has anyone found anything about this hormone levonorgestrel and how long it takes to get out of your system? Second, if anyone knows of any suits against these people, let me know because this is really interfering with my life and with my children and my boyfriend!! This is ridiculous, I didn't know about all of this crap prior to getting the Mirena and wouldn't have gotten it if I did know, and I am still paying for it after removal! Please let me know...thanks!! : )

hey!
I have had the coil out for about 6months now, I think and I am still experiencing minor side-effects- I still have slight acne and am slightly emotional about a week before my period SOMETIMES and only for a day or so, if that. Atually, I think its such a tiny amount-mood swing wise it doesnt even compare to when I had the coil. I was honestly suicidal. I think it does take time to come out of your system but you will get there. There are things you can do, like eating really well-good digestion is really important, to flush it all out your system you need to avoid constipation as the hormones can be re-absorbed from your bowel, and herbal medicne including taking a evening primrose oil tablet and also a good vitamina d calcium tablet. These worked for me, everyone is different, but I want you to know I feel soooo much better now. Just give it time- your body needs time to adjust-hope you feel better :)

The actual hormone is out of your body within a week...but the lingering side effects are what continue. Some ladies have posted that they have relief of most symptoms within a few days...but I have struggled myself. Mine has been removed for 11 days now and have not lost 1 pound, although I've increased my excercising to 6 or 7 times per week. My total weight gain was almost 30 pounds in a five month period of time. Good luck...hopefully it will start getting better soon.

Hi, Monday will be 5 weeks for me that Mirena was removed. Give it time. I drank a lot of water with lemon and started exercising 4 times a week. I am feeling better and I've lost about 7 pounds. I know it's frustrating but I have to say I'm starting to feel like myself again it just takes a little time. My stomach is also going down thank goodness.
Hang in there.

I have gone up 2 dress sizes and have been prescribed anti depressants and ache from head to toe - can this be the Mirena coil?

Freddiej - If you are saying that you've gone up 2 sizes since the Mirena was inserted, I would certainly suspect that it is the Mirena. Most of us here have had similar experiences. Many side effects that the Drs tell you cannot be attributed to Mirena have disappeared or diminished greatly since removal....so what are we to think, then? Watch your side effects closely. I would be very concerned about having been prescribed antidepressants if you've not had a problem with that before. I had anxiety and panic attacks for the first time in my life while on Mirena....and none since removal in Feb. Still waiting for my period to return, however. Take care.

Freddiej,
Before I had the Mirena in, I had very little problem with weight gain, a pound here and there, up and down; had an occasional breakout of a pimple or two at PMS, wasn't an emotional person and NEVER had depression or mood swings...Then it all changed after I had Mirena in. I have NO DOUBT for me that it was all the Mirena. We are all different yet it seems that for all of us ladies' who don't know each other have sooo many of the same problems with one thing in common, the Mirena coil. In agreement with red, weigh your symptoms carefully; consider the before and after insertion. Good luck!

I, too, am having lingering problems after having the Mirena removed. I demanded that it be removed after a week & my GYN office refused, telling me to up my Advil use and give it another week. I gave it two weeks and then insistently demanded its removal, which they finally did. I bled worse after the removal (clots and waterfall for almost a week), still have severe pelvic discomfort, tender breasts, the immediate weight gain has not disappeared & the brain fog is unacceptable. (at least the acne is going away - talk about devastating, since I never had an issue with it before) I also had severe leg/foot/hand swelling. (to the point it got scary)
A few days prior to insertion, a few ultrasounds were done. It was reported that I had NO ovarian cysts, NO fibroids, and "just a little endo" and that my uterus was larger than average; I sounded at a 10 as opposed to the normal 8. Well, that was before the insertion. Less than 2 weeks after removal, the hospital's ultrasound showed an irregular complex ovarian cyst and a very thick walled uterus. (more than normal) Did I also mention that my uterus sounded at 10? According to the reps at Mirena, only women that sound from 6-9 are candidates. Anything over a 9 is NOT a candidate for this product. I had asked the DR again about the size of my uterus before insertion, reminding him that I sounded at 10, and is it ok?
He said of course it's fine.
Anyone having a problem with this device need to file an Adverse Reaction Report with Mirena and then I highly recommend you report your problems to other health organizations, especially the FDA.

I am only 19 years old I got mirena inserted in May. The other night I was getting ready to go to bed and I felt something on my head. I went to see what it was and i saw a patch of hair missing. I was so scared. I cried all night. My hir was my pride now I barely have any left. I've also been getting extremely irritated to the point that I have snapped at everyone for the smallest things. I am getting mirena removed friday. Please let me know what action is being taken against Mirena.

I had my Mirena put in January 2008 and have since gained 15 pounds and gone up 2 pants sizes!!! I KNOW it is because of the Mirena. It makes me feel hungry ALL THE TIME and makes me want sweets ALL THE TIME. I also have a horribly bloated midsection! I swear I look like I am 4 month pregnant!!! Needless to say I am having it removed the day after tommorrow. Does anyone know how long it will take before the bloating subsides and the weight starts to come off?
