In September of 2007 my then 13 year old daughter was put on Singular for mild asthma. At the time she was a straight A student, vice president of our school and a popular girl who's guidance counselor described as "the glue of her grade" because she was so well liked. In November she told me that she was struggling with advanced Latin and Science. She asked to drop down to on grade Latin so we did. In December her science teacher notified us that she had a C average. She told me that she thought she had ADD/ADHD and she couldn't keep up. At the same time she was having a lot of problems with friends at school and we just attributed it to being 14. 3 weeks ago we discovered that she is significantly behind in English and it was then that she told me that she is been having horrific night mares. She said that they usually involve someone killing her or her killing herself. She said that they were so graphic that she couldn't repeat it out loud. She also said that she would feel waves of anxiety that would come over her at school and she would act "witchy" to the kids in her class for no real reason. She said that sometimes when she is trying to do her homework she will read the same passage for 2 hours and still have no idea what it's about. She also said that the suicidal thoughts from her sleep happened during they day and that she had thoughts of her harming herself. Fortunately her pulminologist told us that this may be caused by singular and we immediately took her off of it which was 2 weeks ago. She has only had 1 "bad dream" not even a nightmare since. She had one anxiety attack 3 days after she was off it and she describes her moods as the "cloud lifting....slowly". Now, we have to pick up the pieces. Her grades have suffered, her friendships have suffered and most of all her self esteem is very low. I'm grateful that we found out the cause but I feel as if my daughter lost a year of her life and I worry that because Merck won't admit there are side effects we can't find out how long it remains in their system. Is anyone else concerned about the long term affect and has anyone pursued a class action suit to try to get this drug tested properly?

Please file a report with the FDA. So far that it the only course of action that we have.

I am concerned about the long term affects and will continue counseling for my my daughter. This has stolen four years of my daughter's life. I'm concerned about the kids who's parents don't know or haven't put it together yet. Our peditrician mentioned this as something to take into consideration after he heard the FDA report, but didn't recommend stopping it. It wasn't until I decided to do the research about a month later that I put 2 and 2 together and just took her off of it. We were attributing everything to a different cause. I also took her off Flonase. She's congested and the Dr recommended a Netti Pot. Haven't found one yet. Hope your daughter continues to improve.

Thanks for your response. I've decided to have my daughter seen by both a MSW and a psychiatrist but (for obvious reasons) I'm concerned the psychiatrist will recommend a drug. She can't use Flonase because she has nose bleeds but she does use a Netti pot. We bought ours in CVS. I tried the Netti pot and I felt like I was drowning but my daughter is fine with it. Good luck to you.

Drugs reactions deplete many essential nutrients from our systems. Inflammatory response is very stressful on the body. It is sometimes a very big effort to work on the diet to put back what has been taken away. It takes a long time.

Quinolines particularly deplete B-vitamins, follic acid, calcium/magnesium/zinc and omega-3 fatty acid. Sometimes the blood lab work shows elevated homocysteine which proves that the body has suffered inflammation. Cardiologist now use homocysteine level to show whether someone is at risk for heart disease due to inflammation.

Here is the pharmaceutical company ZINGER. Now companies such as Merck and Pfizer are going to offer niacin products to lower cholesterol. Well, yeh, duh !. All of these drug reactions are causing depleted B vitamins which elevate cholesterol. Then after they have tried to kill us by depleting our B - Vitamins, they want to sell us another pill to give the B vitamins back to us.

Yes, I am also concerned about long-term effects. My 15 year old was taking it for almost 10 years until she saw the CNN story at the end of March. She stopped singulair immediately and thankfully has only needed a few nebulizer treatments since then, because we have not replaced it with any other preventative med. Her allergy/asthma Dr. basically discounted the problems with singulair but said to take her off it, if she was having problems with anxiety, depression, etc. My daughter's problems seemed to escalate after puberty to the point of her almost not wanting to leave her room for days, until the CNN story. After being off the med for almost 2 months I can see a signficant difference in her personality, but occasionally the anxiety surfaces again so at this point I have no idea if it's still from the drugs being in her system for 10 years, or just normal teenage drama. All I know is her freshman year of high school was ruined and I had to withdraw her from regular school and put her in the independent study program until this fall. If a class-action suit is started I will participate, but my energies are pretty drained trying to help my daughter get back to normal. I check this website every few days, so if anyone else starts a class-action, please give information on how to be included.

My son began taking this medication in 2002. He was on it for 3 years off and on. He had already been diagnosed with ADHD at the time. He is 15 now and we are having some very serious issues. Nightmares, violent thoughts, self-hatred, aggression, etc. These are much worse at the teenage years then when he was actually on the medication. This drug has very serious long term lasting effects which can actually lay dormant until the puberty age onset. Then something with the hormones triggered this onset. It can not be attributed to the ADHD only. He was asked to leave his scool after writing a very scary letter and threating his teachers. He is now under phychiatric care and his anxiaty levels are off the charts. I sent out an e-mail to a couple of Class Action Lawyers and will let you guys know what is happening. Hang in there. Also, beware if your child has been off of the medication and the side effects lesson, keep watching because they can reappear at the onset of puberty. This is very difficult for us as parents because we want the best for our children and actually gave them something that has maybe permenently damaged them. My Son had a 3.5 GPA by the way and was outgoing and happy. Everything I have is being focused on taking it day by day so I understand what you guys are going through. I don't want this to happen to any more children and we can stop it.

Hi All,
When I discovered my daughter's problem with singulair my biggest question was hoe long it would stay in her system. Because there isn't any scientific information about these side effects we can only learn by documenting what happens when the kids go off it so I thought that I should send an update. As girls mature sooner she had already gone through puberty before she went on it so it's difficult for me to comment on what impact it might have. It's been almost 2 months since my daughter was taken off singulair and I'm happy to report she's doing significantly better. Her last nightmare was about 2 1/2 weeks after she went off the drug. Her anxiety and mood swing took a bit longer to improve but they are almost completely gone. I, now, suspect that her severe case of anemia this past winter was related to the drug as her blood levels have been completely normal since she stopped taking it. The only residual issue for her has been an effort to repair her friendship that were damaged by her mood swings. I have her seeing a therapist to sort through it and I'm cautiously optomistic that she won't have to be in therapy for too long. We've also been in touch with FDA and more specifically the woman whose in charge of looking into all of our accounts. If you haven't filed your report...please do so. If you have an older child you may want to do it together. I did so with my daughter and we even offered to do a phone interview so that we could provide even more detail (which they have expressed interest in but haven't contacted us yet) I think it helped my daughter to feel as she had some level of control in fighting back. Good luck to all of you.

My 15 year old son was just on Singulair for a month this January 2008. ..What a sudden change from a happly involved teenage student to a very depressed, mood swinging individual. His teachers as I am are all shock with this change in his personality.
I am concerned about long term effects. It has been 5 months and stomach aches, mood swings, depression has lightened a bit yet the anxiety other symptoms reappear . My heart goes out to all the parents whom witness such dramatic changes in their children due to a perscription that was meant to help them. There is no doubt in my being that my son's changed behaviour is related to Singulair.
Yes, I would be interested in a class action suit. Please advise if anybody has started one. Thanks

My 14 year old daughter has been on Singulair since she was 8 years old. We saw dramatic changes in her behavior (for the worse) and had no idea what was happening to her. As she grew older and took her Singulair on her own she often was non-compliant. She would often return to being the delightful child that she had been, but we never linked it to her Singulair non-compliance It took me until now to understand what has been happening to her.
During those years I developed severe anxiety, insomnia, depression, and tremors. No one linked it to my Singulair use. I know that the similarities between my daughter's problems and mine are not hereditary, because she's adopted. This drug had stolen her childhood and nearly destroyed me.
