I'm a 44 year old female, and I have been taking 40mg. of lisinopril for over a year now. I also take omeprazole 20 mg. (a sub for prilosec) every day. Before taking lisinopril, I did have high blood pressure, but since taking this medication, I have had more problems than that. I have an irritating cough all the time and phlegm in my throat so thick that I feel as if I am chocking to death. I also have a severe rash all over my body and on the bottoms of my feet, and on my hands. I am depressed all the time, have no interest in sex whatsoever, and basically feel like crap all the time. I have a very bad pain in the left side of my neck that I know is not a result of sleeping the wrong way. I have to say, I never felt this way before taking this medication, but today I got to the point that I wanted to look up side effects to see if what I'm taking is hurting me. After reading some of these posts, I believe I know what my problem is. My husband was also on lisinopril, but 20mg and had such a terrible cough that we thought he had pneumonia. He is off the medication now, and his cough had disappeared. For me, the rash, and depression is the biggest thing. I have decided to take myself off this medication on my own, and try to find another way to deal with my high blood pressure. If you know of any herbs, and/or foods that help with blood pressure, I would love to hear about them. Thank you all for the information you have posted here. I'm sure it will help others think about what the doctors and pharmaceutical companies are trying to do to us. Seems the more medications they prescribe, the worse side effects we endure. Thanks again everyone!

Hi Belledanah, I read your post last night and I could hardly wait to get back to you this morning. My husband who is 69 yrs old had a double by pass last year. He has congestive heart failure which runs in his family. He has been on lisinopril and metoprolol for quite some time. He had what we thought was vertigo but after doing some research on these medications which are both blood pressure meds I come to the conclusion that it was those meds. I was very careful about taking his BP and noticed that it would go down as far as 81/50 after he would take the lisinopril. He could do absolutely nothing during the morning hrs and then in the afternoon he would get a little better and his blood pressure would go up where it should be but was still very light headed. We both made the decision to quit both meds after going to the er several times and even they couldn't tell us why he was so dizzy all the time and put him on meclizine which is a med for vertigo and that made him even worse. He has been off both of those meds for about 2 wks now and is so much better. He went to the cardio Dr yesterday with a letter in hand from me because I couldn't go. I told him in the letter about what I had come up with and all the info about lisinopril and metoprolol and basically said why would a person keep taking these drugs if they have no quality of life and then develope other life threatning problems. Obviously it worked because he took my husband off all meds including lasix which can also affect your liver. The next one is zocor. But the main reason I am replying to you is because you had asked about foods and herbs. What I am about to tell that will help with BP you probably have heard about and maybe you haven't. There is something out there for just about every ailment we have and it's all natural and healthy. My husband and I have found something that is just great. It tastes good and everybody loves it. Dark chocolate. It's called Xocai The Healthy Chocolate. It works. It really really does. There is a web site called www.mydrchocolate.com Check it out. This particular chocolate is not heat processed, in other words it is not heated above 110 degrees. Therefore all the good stuff is not cooked out of it. There is no sugar no fat and no caffine. There is also another web site called TheChocolateCD.com Check it out. Xocai (shosigh) also has a website but the first website I mentioned tells you all about dark chocolate and the benefits. There is a q&a section. I hope this helps and to all of you check out those web sites

I have found that apple cider vinegar helps too. I took Lisinipril for TWO DAYS and had the cough, dry mouth, chills on the second day, so i stopped. It also gave me Tinnitus which is very loud, and hasn't stopped, and it's been two months. I go to an ENT tomorrow, but I think the anxiety I was experiencing before i went on this garbage all contributed once i took the Lisinopril. I found that taking L-Theanine has helped turn it down a bit, and i also bought a self hypnosis to listen to on my mp3 player. best of luck, Carol

please let me know how you are going to stop this medication. are you going to stop cold turkey, or are you gradually weaning yourself off this blood pressure med? are you afraid that your b.p. will go out of control if you stop the meds? i am slowly weaning myself off of adalat xl 20mg/day, and altace (15mg/day). the side effects i believe are worse than the conditon at hand. i am exercising, dieting, and trying to lower my b.p. so that i never have to use these awful drugs again. i am seeking the aid of a naturopath or good herbalist when i can find one.............take care.paiton

Hello

I just read your post and am a pharmacy student. I think it would be a good idea to speak to your doctor about the phlegm and the rashes you get. I would recommend you do not stop your medication without consulting your doctor this is because of the effects of the high blood pressure which would result if you stopped the medicine. I recently read an article regarding the benefits of Garlic in reducing hypertension in the Daily Mail. Try to type it into google and see if it helps.
All the best

Dee
