I dont know how long your son was on singulair ,mine was on it for 3 years, the sleep issues still remain ,although it is a much more restful and peaceful sleep, he is still having problems falling asleep.I have sought help from a sleep specialist, her suggestion is we keep him up 3 hours past bedtime,so when he goes to bed his brain is happy to get there.with the thought being eventually the brain will be able to train itself and know that bed is a restful place, which for so many years sleep has been a place of terror. good luck to you and just know you are not alone
I am assuming then that the dr. you are referring to is your primary. In all fairness, they are not trained specifically in this area. You are smart to go to a specialist. I am a teacher, and it makes me mad when someone criticizes me for not knowing how to spell every word in the dictionary or can't find something on a map. But you are wise to be concerned when he can't find it when he's looking for it online. My point for writing was to say that even the speciallists don't know it all. I am findind it hard to find two doctors who agree on the same treatment for my children. Frustrating! Stay wise by continually researching on your own. Be careful what you read...it's not always true, but it's better to go with your gut then to be sorry you went against it. I believe it's the Lord telling us something is wrong! (Side note: We almost lost our son the day he was born and had to do an emerg. c-section, nurse said, "something was telling me not to let you get up" and if I would have...he would have been dead. So listen to that still small voice.)
That is alarming that your doctor claims he can't find anything. He could statrt with the March FDA announcement:
http://www.fda.gov/cder/drug/early_comm/montelukast.htm
Or he could have gone to the Singulair site where Merck acknnowleges the need to look into this, and asks doctors to monitor their patients for mood and behavioral changes and to report same to both the FDA and to Merck.
Or, he could have noticed the 4 packaging updates to flag these issues.
Or he could have received the education and information Merck promised the FDA in April would provide to doctors on this issue. What, he missed the lunch?
Sorry for the sarcasm but it makes me mad that you are made to feel "crazy" when you have a better understanding of the issue than the doctor does!
Yes the matter is "under investigation" and results are not in yet. But you have every right to act as a concerned parent in the meantime. Hold your ground on this one.
Ok this is ridiculous. All you have to do is type singulair and side effects and a ton of reputable websites come up. Your doctor is obviously lying to you!! The Mayoclinic web page lists over 70 side effects from singulair. Print off a page and take it to your doctor. This just makes me so mad that some professionals are not taking parents serious. Do your homework so that you know more than the doctor. I hope your son gets better. Please take some information with you when you go to the specialist so he doesn't look at you like you are a quack!!!! Good luck and keep us updated!!
As a parent, we know more about our children, and their behavior, than any doctor! Always listen to your gut instincts...they are there for a reason! Find a doctor that will LISTEN to you...most do not. I have a wonderful pediatrician, and he always listens, and I never feel "rushed". That is very important. Good luck to you and your son.
