I have been on Lamictal for about five months for bipolar II. I has been increased slowly over these months and I am now up to 300 mg a day. I have a tendency to sometimes forget things but remembering numbers has never been a problem for me. In fact I can look at someone's tag number driving down the road and remember it for days. Phone numbers of people I have known for 20 years would stick and I wouldn't even have to call them on a regular basis to know the number. However, recently while trying to use my bank debit card at the store I was asked to enter my PIN number and totally could not remember. I tried it several times but it never came to me. I felt like a fool!. At this time, that was three days ago and I still cannot remember it! This is very, very distressing to me. I feel like something has been wiped clean and that I will never get it back. My Lamictal dose has been increased in the last couple of weeks and I thought maybe Lamictal or one of my other meds could be making this happen so I started researching and found this site where other people were complaining of memory loss while on Lamictal. Headaches are another common side effect for me while on this med. It has really helped me emotionally and I need to know if the memory loss is just going to be a temporary thing and it will get back to normal or if I will be forgetting more and more over time. PLEASE HELP!!!

I have taken Lamictal for 2 years and I have had memory problems that have steadily increased. This is sometimes hard to take especially during the direct instruction sessions of my classes(I am a high school teacher).
I also have started loosing lots of hair, especially in the past year. If I were a guy I would do the bald thing, but I am a lady!
I hope the memory thing isn't permanent - that's just too scarey! I may be seeing my doctor to check out other possible causes of hair loss.

I am happy to find this site since it recently occurred to me that maybe one of my meds is causing my memory loss. I used to have a photographic memory and now I can't remember what I did last week. I take Lamictal for Bipolar. I am not sure if this is due to my depression that I am still in or a med. I also take Epival (valproic acid) and just started Wellbutrin and Seroquel a week ago. The memory loss symptom has been going on for awhile now, even though my dosage has been decreased. As for the nightmares, can't say I experienced that myself but I take sleeping pills! And my hair fell out with Epival but not Lamictal. Good luck!

I have been on lamictal for 8 years. For most of that time it was 200mg. I'm tapering off but still taking 50mgs (withdrawal is horrific). I was also on an SSRI for at least 12 years, I tapered off of those also. I believe the last dose was in March (yes, memory problems).
I am just now realizing how severe my long term memory loss is. I can't remember my life! My 18yr old son just moved out and I tried to think about him as a kid growing up, I can barely remember raising him. I have little flashes when I try really hard, not even as clear as pictures and looking at actual pictures hardly helps. I'm devasted. I feel like my life has been stolen from me.
The other huge problem is hair loss. I saw a response that mentioned that. Don't let your doctor tell you it has nothing to do with Lamictal. They don't know. In my experience, they also have no empathy and no understanding of how distressing losing your hair is. It's been progressing since at least 2005.
I also believe it's had an effect on my skin. Although, I haven't been able to find a good definition of "melonin binding" (which is on the label re: skin pigmentation and the eyes also (?)

after 8 days on lamicatl, i have noticed prominent short-term memory loss. i sometimes forget what i am going to say in a sentence. i am confident it will get better. Do you have hair loss or are you urinating a lot. i am urinating constantly, no apparent hair loss, and big-time problems sleeping. i take Ambien to sleep now. i have mild bipolar II

memory loss was not temporary for me, it is accelerating. When I first sarted Lamictal, it was great, clarity, functional, energetic. Then I had a mild BP episode due to stress and lack of sleep from work... After that the doctors freaked and put me back on Depacote (1000mg.) I cannot remember anything with the Lamictal/depacote/wellbutrin combo. AT ALL. But the Wellbutrin/Lamictal was fantastic. I had great memory, even of things from my childhood! I have noticed from reading on here that it is only temporary--the advantages eventually wear off. My doctors believe the manic eppisode could have been avoided if I would not have had the depacote removed. It is hard (and I really want you to know this) to make any type of statement about how my meds, being a totally different combo than yours, affect me vs. you.

Thanks for the reply. It is hard to know which causes what, I know.... so frustrating. I am still awful with my memory and maybe worse. I am on a combo of Lamictal and Seroquel. My bipolar is well-controlled though, and for that I am very, very thankful! I'm sure you know what I mean.
