I've had my Mirena in for about a month now, and honestly, it hasn't given me any problems. Of course I had cramps in the first week, and spotting for the first 3 months or whatever...but I can truly say that I love this birth control, and I hope not to get the negative side effects like most of these women. If you are considering the Mirena for birth control, talk with your doctor. If you have problems, talk with your doctor...if you're pissed off because you feel like you wasted your money, maybe you should take a second to think about it...neither you nor your doctor can look into a crystal ball to find out how something will effect you. But please, if you are considering the Mirena, don't decide against it because what a bunch of middle-aged women (with less than healthy reproductive systems) said. I'm 20 years old, and this IUD is a blessing.

Perhaps you will be one of the lucky ones but if you read through ALL of these posts you will find just as many younger women as "middle age". And please don't presume that middle age = less than healthy reproductive system. While age does change your reproductive system, it does NOT make it unhealthy! Mirena did not agree with me and has thrust me into a premature menopause. I went to the Dr today for my consultation after several blood tests and I have completely transitioned to menopause in less than 5 months. I am not unhealthy, just affected by hormones like any other woman. I hope that you remain free of the side effects that many of us have experienced. By reading these posts, you will at least know to connect them to the Mirena should you experience them one day.

Well I hope you don't have any problems, please refrain from posting such comments where you assume to know 900+ women's health status. I was healthy until Mirena, and post-Mirena I'm gaining my health back. My side effects were gradual, except the weight gain of 15 lbs in the 1st 2 months...everything else - no sex drive, heart palpitations, greasy skin, bloating, horrible acne, depression - all came on gradually about a year after insertion, and nearly caused me to become useless by 15 months post insertion. This board is a safe place for women to share their experiences and lean on one another for support through a very difficult time. You obviously do not understand yet.

For one I am a young woman myself at 23 and have experienced A LOT of the same side effects you have been reading about. They have gradually gotten worse over time which is what has led me to these websites and forums. I thought I was going crazy until I learned that other women are having the same issues as I am and THANK GOODNESS FOR THEM! You are extremely out of line to assume that a certain age group of females are the ones effected. I have NOT experienced (I am having my Mirena removed on Monday) the weight gain, numbness/pain in my limbs, or heart palpitations but COMPLETELY believe it to be possible with this drug. I HAVE experienced loss of libido, depression/irritability (was always a happy/positive person before), and severe anxiety all of which have progressively gotten worse. It was only after I was researching the side effects of Mirena that I discovered others were having the same issues. I am lucky not to have had the other side effects mentioned. There are some women of ALL AGES that have not had one negative side effect from the Mirena IUD but several of us have. It is worth considering if you are looking into getting one or have one and want to know more. And as for talking to the doctors. I tried that. Didn't work. Not surprising considering the health care system in our country. And I didn't pay a cent for this drug as my insurance covered it but that would be the least of my worries even if I had because my health comes first. Please think before you post such insulting things in the future.

It is a rather shallow remark to group women with less than positive mirena stories, as a bunch of middle aged women with less than healthy reproductive systems. Remember Sabrina, you won't always be 20 years old and many women suffer with terrible female issues from their first period. I for one, have had a difficult time all my life and trust me, at 43, I have had a very healthy "reproductive" system and would not classify myself as some complaining middle aged woman which is the tone of your comment. I know many women who have had difficulties with the mirena and one who had to have surgery as a result of it so although there are success stories, there are many horror stories. Some day you will be "middle aged" and may regret your generalizations.

This is a post for women who are suffering, and looking for answers. While it is great you aren't having any side effects, this specifically is asking for side effects. Keep your negative comments about "middle age" to yourself. I am not middle age and had side effects.

Middle aged women? You are crazy. You have had this IUD in for one month and you are claiming it is a blessing because your reproductive system is spectacularly young? I had my Mirena inserted in October of 2005, at the age of 24. The insertion was mildly painful, a bit more uncomfortable than a pap smear. I bled heavily for the first three months, then had fairly light periods (4-6) days for six months. After that I did not have another period. Since the periods stopped, I have gained 65 pounds, I had a drastic increase in body hair, I began experiencing male-pattern baldness, I became irratic in my moods, I suffered severe fatigue and insomnia, I had depression, my skin became oily, my hair (head and body) became coarse and dark, my back and abdomen were swollen with fat, I was very succeptible to infection, and on and on. I have dieted, exercised, taken antidepressants and sleeping pills. Nothing is working. I am not the same woman I was before I had the Mirena inserted. I too thought it was a "blessing" as you called it, but I was wrong. My practitioner urged me to get this, and it was a terrible mistake. I am having mine removed next week. I truly hope you do not experience the hell I have, but you need to be a bit more compassionate. You have only had your implant for a month. I mean come on, seriously.

I just find it funny that you say tht you have had this mirena IUD now for 1 month then you go on to say,
"Of course I had cramps in the first week, and spotting for the first 3 months or whatever..."
How could you have had spotting for the first three months if you have only had this device for one month... are you sure that you do not work for Bayer Pharmaceuticals? Sounds to me like you might.
