Don't worry yet...this is normal after the removal. I had mine removed May 6th, and 2 days later started my 1st period. Very heavy with large clots and lasted about 5 days. Then I had a second period less than a week later, again lasting for about 5 days with large clots. About a week after that one stopped, I spotted for 2 or 3 days. Now three weeks later, I am havign a very normal period...moderate flow, no major clotting. It's just your body stabilizing and returning to normal. Some women don't have their periods for several weeks after removal, some of us start within a few days. Time does heal...just give yourself some time. If the bleeding and clots last for a week or more, you'll need to go see the doc. Or sooner if you're also having any other symptoms, such as light-headed, fever, sharp pain, etc. Good luck to you!
Yep. Heavy bleeding and big clots. I think it's a good thing. Ridding your body of a lot of Mirena crap.
Oh- I was told nto to worry unless you're soaking through a pad or tampon every hour.
I had the same problem. Had mine removed over two weeks ago and except for a couple of odd days where it was light and not noticeable, I have bled heavily and experienced huge clots (alomst as big as the palm of my hand). I am SO hoping this bleeding will stop soon. But mentally I feel so much better than I did with the Mirena fitted.

I had a severe problem. I had mine taken out 7-2-08. By 7-10-08 I was bleeding through an OVERNIGHT pad every hour. Went to ER on friday, was released on Premarin and iron pills for blood loss. By Saturday, I was extremely pale, nauseous, and weak. Went back to ER, and was told I lost 2.5 more points in my blood count (was down to 7). Before I was even admitted Saturday night, I fell in the bathroom, started convulsing from shock of rapid loss of blood. I was given 3 units of blood from Sat late to early Sunday. After 3 units of blood transfused I was still at only 5.9! I was bleeding faster than I could be infused with the blood. I passed out three times Saturday night, and blood pressure dropped to 90/40, my normal being 120/70. I thought I was going to die. Sunday evening I had another D&C to stop the bleeding. It has since slowed, but doc put me on Hi Dose birth control pills. I finally was discharged last night. I was hoping to get pregnant soon. Now I am not sure if I ever will. I will NEVER have any sort of hormonal implant in my body ever again. I don't even want to use the pill, except that it is meant to regulate my hormonal imbalance. The thought that I could have bled to death in my sleep Saturday night (if not admitted to the hospital) scared the crap out of me. I wish Mirena would have THAT warning on their label!
I hate to say it but I am so happy to find this thread. I had my Mirena removed 9 days ago and have been experiencing very heavy bleeding with large clots since then (and I had been bleeding with my period for 9 days prior to that.) I am counting the minutes til I stop bleeding but I am so thrilled to have the Mirena out. Has anyone heard of the removal process causing tears to explain the bleeding? Just curious as I talked to a nurse tonight who suggested that it be the cause of the bleeding. Good luck to everyone.

On the one hand, it's great to feel that I'm not alone, but on the other it's really scary to read about all these experiences, especially #10183... I had my mirena removed a week ago (after having had it without any major side effects for a year and a half). No pain, no spotting immediately after removal, but some 5 five days after I started bleeding and at times it becomes REALLY heavy. This morning started with clots. When is the time to worry and go to see the doctor to avoid the horrifying blood loss experience above? Thanks in advance for your help!
I wish I had never had the Mirena inserted. It is a complete nightmare! I had it inserted on Thursday and removed on the following Tuesday. My mind is at ease knowing that is is out of me, but the bleeding is horrifying... The first day it was removed I experienced really light bleeding, then all hell broke loose on Wednesday morning, It is like a fountain that I can not turn off. Does anyone know how long this will last... Since my doctors all have different answers... They were all into the idea of the Mirena, I guess it brings in revenue...It is all a scheme to sell the product to as many patients possible. My advise is don't get the Mirena...Exhaust all other birth control options first.
I am so glad I have found this site, I had the Mirena removed about 4 weeks ago, had short heavy bleeding for a few days 3 days later. Now, though 4 weeks later I am having the period from hell.
As somebody else put it here like a fountain, I am going through tampons at an alarming rate, and there are loads of blood clots, it's really quite scarey.
My doctor told me this coil was the answer to all my prayers, but basically it has been the worst experience of my life, depression, weight gain, hairloss, and now this terrible bleeding.
I am going to my doctors later and taking all these postings with me, I'll let you know what she says....
I had my mirena removed after 3 years with no periods but very sore breasts and absolutely evil migraines. I had it removed so that I can try for a baby., I had no problem after removal and shortly after had a normal period - 4 days quite normal bleeding. I counted out the 28 days in my diary as to when I would start again - after 32 days I started my monthly. It started off as normal for one day and for the past two days now I have been bleeding at an alarming rate. I have not experienced anything like this at all. I am going through tampons/towels at the rate of one every hour (using super duper ones). I don't have any big clots coming out but seem to have lots and lots of little ones. This post has given me some hope for the fact that other people have gone through this so it does appear to be a side effect of removal. I'll just have to ride the storm out and hope that it stops soon. My fiance bought me some Guinness to drink as a way of resstoring some iron to my body!! It just worries me that my body is going to be so messed up that it takes a long time for me to get pregnant :-(
I had my Mirena removed two days ago...this morning I was at work and I suddently felt blood gushing out. I ran to the bathroom and had huge clots and profuse bleeding. It freaked me out...thank goodness I was able to get a pad AND a tampon or I would have had to go home. I've been changing my tampon once an hour and I'm still bleeding through to the pad. I removed the Mirena due to CONSTANT spotting. I was told that I might have bleeding that day (a year ago I was told that Mirena is wonderful for women with heavy periods - HA!) but I had no idea that I would bleed like this. Thank goodness that I found this post. I'll defnitely call my doctor if this continues. And I'm getting married in a week. I sure hope this goes away....
Yea I got mine removed on monday and I was so scared last night when I had so much blood soaked the pad and my clothes so quickly! I'm so happy to have that thing out and I'm so surprised how many people have the same side effect.
Wow.... I am in a book group with several ob/gyn drs and NPs as well as the RNs that work with them. They sang the praises for Mirena for months before I decided to trade in my Paragard for the Mirena. I was sold on the idea that it would help to reduce the severity of my periods that I was having with the Paragard. I had the Mirena in place for a little over 18months with little to no side effects (so I thought) until about 4 months ago when I started experiencing breakout bleeding at 10 day intervals. I also gained some weight and size in my lower abdomen and hip area that was troubling because I couldnt do anything to improve on it. I am a body builder/fitness trainer and am very astute on the subject of body transformation, so Im sure that you can imagine my frustration. In looking back, I have lost quite a bit of hair, but having tons of hair (thanks mom and dad) I didnt think that it was associated with the Mirena, I just thought that my hair care products needed switching up.
I had the Mirena removed 10 days ago at my loving boyfriends repeated urgings. (He had a vasectomy so pregnancy was no longer the fear, but I had such a horrible experience with the removal of the Paragard that I was reluctant to do it). His concern, and rightly so, was that placing artificial hormones in the body would do more harm than good. That mother nature knows best and just let her do her job! OK. So, the removal was thankfully uneventful (I ended up in surgery with the Paragard) a small sharp pain and then nothing. That was Thurday. By Sunday night I started to heavily spot. Monday morning, I dropped my boys off at school, went to the gym and then went home. After showering, it was like someone turned on the tap! I had moderate sized clots and one really large (and scary looking) one. This went on until Thursday. I removed any hygiene products - life is good! Friday was uneventful as was most of Saturday (today) until I stood up to answer the door (thank GOD is was my really good friend dropping by) and felt a rush of warm fluid. I ran to the bathroom and realized that I was in a full flow again with lots and lots of clots. I went thru an overnight pad in little over an hour while sitting. As soon as I stood up I soaked it and overflowed!
I have PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) and have irregular periods and minimal flow when I am not on ANY therapies so this is really disconcerting for me. I am thankful for all of you ladies before me who have posted their experiences because I couldnt find ANY information regarding such heavy bleeding and blood clots on any of the Bayer sites or and medical sites. The gift of your experiences have certainly helped me to realize that this is not uncommon, but also make me angry that there is nothing in the literature that prepares you for this nor exposes this risk/side effect so that you can make a better, more informed decision! Also, we should all wonder WHY our bodies are so eager to rid ourselves of this chemically derived hormone! And WHY the clotting? How am I producing so much endomitral tissue at such a fast rate? Is this just a build up from when I wasnt flowing before and my body is taking this opportunity to perform it's own DNC?
I obviously have a lot of unanswered questions, but am thankful that I am not alone in my quest for them.
(I would love to know when each of you balanced out or if you have balanced out yet?)
After back to back pregnancies with my youngest being born November 23, 2008 my obgyn recommended Mirena due to it having the "least amount of side effects" according to her. I gladly had it inserted on December 22, 2008. Insertion was painful but I thought nothing of it. A few days went by of spotting and then my period came. My ob made it clear that I may have bleeding/spotting but it will go away with time. June 07, 2009 My period has been continuous since I had it put in, my hair has fallen out so much that it looks like I have a comb over when I put my hair in a ponytail, I'm chronologically depressed and on medication. I have KILLER Migraines that start around the same time everyday. I gained a good 10 to 15 pounds on top of the baby weight that I was initially shedding. My face is now open for tours as it has replaced the rocky mountains from all the acne. I have monster cramps that travel from my abdomen to my back and down my leg at times. I have no sex drive and I'm a complete bitch to my husband, kids, family etc. I called my doctor to have it removed but since I have Kaiser (Kaiser sucks) and they don't consider it medically necessary to have it removed my ob has refused to answer my calls to setup an appointment. On June 10, 2009 I researched removal of Mirena on the OFFICAL FDA site and removed my own Mirena. The removal was not painful however I do recommend for you to see your doctor before attempting something like this. I'm angery at myself for not researching Mirena and I'm angery at doctors for recommending it to all there patients like it's the best thing ever. The only thing that makes me feel a little better is finding this site and being able to vent my experience. I'm sorry for all you ladies that had to go thru this but now I know I'm not the only one.
By the way, I too have been having big ugly "blob like" blood clots that have scared the shit out of me...
I have nothing good to say of my Mirena experience. I had mine placed 2 months after the birth of my daughter (painlessly). However, within a few days, I started bleeding and didn't stop for 8 months. Even after being placed on ADDITIONAL hormones to regulate the flow, I still was spotting at the very least. They call it the most effective birth control and it certainly was because my husband and I didn't have sex for that entire time! Anyway, at about the point when I wanted it out, it finally regulated and I had short and light periods ever since.
So now, we decided we wanted to try for another baby. I had it removed June 15th with a period due on the 21st. Instead, I started what I thought was my period on June 17th (2 days after removal) and have been having HEAVY bleeding and quarter-sized clots for 6 days now with no let up in sight.
I am going to be so upset if I have to put up with this for weeks or even months. I 've already emailed my Dr. to try and be proactive about anything they can put me on, but I think anything they use to regulate me is going to be another form of birth control which ultimately defeats the purpose of why I had Mirena taken out in the first place.
I'll keep you posted and keep checking this board. Glad (kind of) to know I'm not the only one suffering!
Wow, I googled mirena removal and clotting just in case there was anything out there, never guessing it was "normal." I had my Mirena removed last Wednesday, got my "period" on Friday, and have been horrified at the heavy flow and scary large clots and tissue like blobs I have been expelling! After very very light periods when I had it in, I was in no way expecting anything like this, nor did anyone tell me this could happen. I was really worried about it, but this has, sadly, put my mind at ease that it is happening to others. I am just glad it's out right now, wondering what my fertility will be like since we are planning to try for #3. Thanks to all for sharing your experiences! Good luck!
I'm glad I found women who have had the same experience I'm having right now. I had my Mirena taken out 6/24 and the morning of 6/27 I got out of bed and had to run to the bathroom. I was gushing blood which went everywhere, the carpet, the bathroom floor. I grab a towel so that my husband could move the bathroom capet out and I was soaking through the towel. I havent had much cramping but first thing in the morning I rush to the bathroom to sit on the toliet and blood just gushes out. It's scary to me because this has never happened to be before. I took the IUD so my hormones could balance out before we try to have a baby this winter. I'm just scared that the next few periods will start the same way. So frustrating, I'm never going to use the Mirena again.
I can not believe that doctors do not warn about this. I had a Mirena for only 3 weeks - and the side effects completely freaked me out. Hair loss, headaches, complete mood and personality changes, constipation, acid reflux, etc. I was so stressed and just wanted it out - out - OUT of me, I had to fight to not pull it out myself. My Dr couldn't get me in for 2 days so I went to a Sexual Health clinic. When I complained to my Dr she basically acted like I was making up these symptoms and tried REALLY hard to convince me to leave it in, telling me it would level out. I said if my body is reacting this way that is enough for me to know I need it out. I also said that I thought the Mirena gave a very low dose of hormones, but that obviously is not true considering I have been on the Pill and Depo with none of these side effects. But she fought like crazy to leave it in! I couldn't believe it. My BF said she probably gets paid by the makers of Mirena for every patient she can convince to get it or keep it in. Now I have it out and am bleeding just like all you other ladies describe with huge clots etc. After only having it in for THREE weeks. I understand that this may not happen to everyone. But it clearly happens to some, and that means Drs should inform their patients about it before it's put in, and also when it is taken out. There is no way in hell that I would every recommend this to anyone. It should be taken off the market.
And to the poor girl who was in the ER getting transfusions - you should seriously consider suing!
Firstly, I'd like to THANK each and every one of you ladies who took the time to post your experiences. I feel for each and every one, as I too am now going through this. I had Mirena inserted in on 6/20/08 and removed on 7/21/09. I complained on migraines, had MRIs and put on Topamax for migraines. Drs told me that the hormones are very low and I shouldn't worry about it. So it was left in. Though I loved my periods were very low flow like 2 days only need pantyliner no tampons, I had little cramping. Which was one of my main reasons for going on as I always suffered with severe cramping 3-4 times a day needing heating pads and I'd cry in pain sometimes. I'm 45 and am done with kids. I'm blessed with a 15 yr old though did want another prior to Mirena but for 3 years no success even without protection. But didn't want to chance becoming pregnant at 45 either so chose it as highly recommended by Doc. She said weight gain would not be affected.
So currently last 2 months the cramping started up again, tho periods were low and short. Started using heating pads again . Headaches have gotten worse over last 6 months. Have used ice packs many days and nights a week over my eyes, lights bothered me and need to sit in dark at night. Finally got appointment for my yearly with OB she set up Pelvic Ultrasound - shows I have cyst on left ovary (tho very common could disapper) but that Mirena was a little low (which could cause the cramping). I was told to go right up to the doctor and she stated best to remove it since too low. She suggested that I should consider having procedure called NovaSure to help in heavy bleeding and will minimize cramping. I stated I've never had heavy bleeding even before Mirena. But I'll think for the cramping issue reason. She prescribed a progestin only birth control pill Micronor (Julivette is the generic name I got) to start same day, until I decide next what to do. Either reinsert Mirena or stay on BC pills or choose another form. My husband says NO to any more drugs and he's going to plan for Vesectomy.
I had my short period 2 days prior to Mirena removal on Tues. 7/21. I started to bleed lightly on Tues, Wed more heavy then Thursday the rush came in. Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, now today Tuesday its the flowing rapids with clots. I've been in the house as can't go anywhere because as soon as I get up from sitting position. I get another clot, get to the bathroom and mostly manage to drop there. I'm out of work Friday, Monday and today. I've called the Dr. office (she's on Vacation) yesterday, Nurse states if bleeding through pad/tampon every hour then maybe should go to ER, get blood work. I've asked to come there she stated they can't do anything as the ER could have OB on call come in and maybe may do emergency D & C. I decided to give it yesterday and track all that happened, timings, # of clots, pad changes, and how much on pad. Don't mean to be gross, but this hopefully will help others too. In 24 hours timings, 15 pads - about 75% full, with 64 clots counted. Not including what I couldn't count or feel. I've actually started to catch a few clots in a cup (for testing) in case I go to the ER or DR today (waiting for a call).
I'm at the point where I may now look into a product suit lawyer. Mirena needs to be taken off the shelf and Drs. need to better consult their patients about Mirena. When I mentioned to my doc several months ago about what I found on Mirena's affect on migraine headaches on internet, she stated not to read the internet as only the bad stuff gets reported. There's 1000's of happy customers without problems. Yea right, wait till they get Mirena removed!!!!
Thanks to all that have helped me as when I found this site and felt so much more relieved knowing that what's happening to me and this heaving bleeding with clots is "common". That I am NOT the only one.
I will be back on this site with update and also if I do a product suit I would need you ladies to join in, the more we have the better.
I can sympathize with everyone. I won't repeat what all of you have said, but I have the same heavy bleeding with very large clots. Can anyone tell me how long it took them to get pregnant after removal and/ or how long after the bleeding stopped that you were able to get pregnant again?
Also I feel weak, tired, and the acne is horrible.......going on 13 days after removal
I am also glad I found this site. I had my Mirena out two days ago after almost 2 years of using it. While I initally loved the perk of being "period free", it started to weigh on me that perhaps it was unnatural not to cycle like that, so I had it taken out (also had dizziness/bloating/weight gain issues as so many of you have mentioned). Now I have started bleeding profusely and passing very large clots (including one that was palm-sized). I called my doctor and he said that it is "normal for me, though not everyone experiences that after removal". I don't know what to make of that. Obviously it is not that uncommon if all of you are experiencing the same thing. I'd like to think this is my body's way of expelling all the "stuff" that it should have been voiding for the past 2 years, but wasn't as a result of the Mirena. Even with the bleeding/clotting, I can say that I am feeling 100% better having it out of me. I seem to think more clearly, the bloating is gone, and I feel like I've lost 5 lbs already. There definitely needs to be more warnings and patient education prior to using this product. I wish now that I would have never done this to my body.
I had the Mirena inserted on 7/5/09 and after all the same symptoms as everyone else, depression, anxiety, no sex drive, weight gain, hair loss. i had it removed on fri 8/2/09 not even a month later. Now that it all makes sense, I am also very frustrated. I was uninformed about the side effects, and am upset with myself that I trusted my midwifes advice about getting it, I wish I would have done more research besides just looking at the pamphlet. I am now on my period 2 days later and am relieved to know that he HEAVY bleeding has happened to everyone. Although I am scared to go to sleep tonight, because i am worried about the clots and possible pool of blood I may wake up in. I am going to pass this thread on to every girl I know and also inform my friend who wants hers out, on what to expect. I am curious when the bleeding will subside, if anyone can answer? Its Sunday and I will be on the phone with my doctor first thing in the am!
I had the same problem, bleeding through a tampon AND pad within 30 min. Horrible and can not leave the hosue so I went back to the doctor and she put me back on birth control to stop the bleeding. Its day 7 of solid blood clots and we are trying to conceive but when? I want this to stop and the birth control isn't even helping. Can anyone tell me when they stoped bleeding and how soon they were able to conceive?
Hey Ladies. What a relief to know the blood clots are normal. I am not looking forward to the next few days though. I had Merina removed on 8/19 and starting taking the pill on the same day. I started my period on 8/27 Thursday in the morning and was actually happy to have a period after not having one for over 2 1/2 years (had Merina put in in 9/06) Friday was okay but today Saturday is very heavy with a lot of clots. I have never in my life had clots like this. Days 2 and 3 were always heavy for me I hope this will all turn out well. Hang in there girls. At least we are Merina free now!
I had the Mirena inserted due to heavy periods in June 09. My body expelled it in early August (more painful than labor). I have had the HEAVY bleeding and huge clots ever since. Last week I was admitted into the hospital for a blood transfusion and Premarin treatment. It stopped for a couple of days and my hemoglobin got back to 8.9 after 2 units of blood. One week later I am bleeding like crazy again just as bad with the clots. Now my doctor is saying a hysterectomy is the only option. This has altered my life to no end. My teenager is fed up with me not feeling up to going anywhere or not wanting to because I bleed through everything. Anyone know of another option, please post. I am having anemia symptoms again and I do not want to have to continue to get blood transfusions. I am only 36 and would like to avoid the hysterectomy at all cost. Please help.
I am going through the a similar situation. I had my daughter 12-07; I had gotten the "paragard" (something similar to mirena- without the hormones) in Feburary 2008. From the day I had my daughter till approximately 6-09 I was bleeding extremely heavily. I would go through a pad every 20 minutes, if I was lucky some days I could go every 45 minutes. I was also having pains that to me felt worse than then contractions when I gave birth. I knew something was wrong, but all my doctors kept telling me I was fine. I was supposed to let my body straighten itself out. But how long am I supposed to wait? I waited a year and a half. After many different medications to try to "straighten" my menstral cycle I told the doctors to cram it. I stopped taking the scripts, and began seeing another doctor. This is when I found out that my previous doctor had overlooked the cancer cells in my uterus. For a year and a half!! They did not realize that there could have been something else wrong besides my "menstral cycle". I then underwent the endoscopy procedure (11-08). It was very painful, but I got through. I then found out that my only way to releave some of the bleeding, and the pain, was to remove the paragard and get a historectomy. Now let me inform you, I am only 21 years old at the time. The doctors told me to come back in March of 2009 for a 6 month pap- smear. Unfortunately It is already september, and I have yet to make it in. I had medicaid, because I have three young children and can not afford insurance, and they shut my insurance off. They told me I was not in need of it. So as I have reapplied atleast 5 different times, and gotten no where, my health is slowly getting worse. My bleeding is regular (because I took some vitamins) but the bleeding is extremely bad!! To give an idea (and I do not mean to be disgusting) but when I am standing the blood is flowing out of my like I am urinating. I am going through a pad every 10-20 minutes. I do not know what to do anymore. I have no insurance, and I can not afford any. I have two step children, and an almost 2 year old baby girl. I need to get some help asap. If anyone has any ideas PLEASE let me know what they are. Email me at faithzmami@yahoo.com - Thanks everyone who reads this!!
omg! I can't believe all I've read! We had 3 boys somewhat back to back and our 3rd was a bc baby so we decided the pill wasn't working for us so we chose the mirena. My dr also warned of no side affects and insisted that I'd be able to conceive almost immediately after having it removed. Well I got it in August of 2007 and all was well. I was living in the land of NO periods!! But the in January of 09 I had been waking up with morning sickness, severe fatigue, sore breasts, every preg symptom there is. My dr did nothing because he insisted that I could NOT be pregnant. Well a few weeks went by and I woke up one morning in Feb with severe abdominal pains and after 18 months of no bleeding went to bathroom and passed huge clot and lots of blood. I bled for a couple of days. My dr again said it couldn't have beena miscarriage because i couldn't have gotten pregnant with the mirena. I feel like I know my body better than he does and I was sure that's what it was. I decided to leave it in and tried to convince myself that he was right. 7 months later and no more bleeding I got all those symptoms again. My GP was convinced that I was pregnant but that it was too soon for HCGs to show up. (With one of my pregnancies my HCGs didn't show up till I was 6 weeks!!) That was on thursday, I called them back onMonday because on Sunday morning I woke up with same results as before, lots of pain, large clot, lots of blood. My GP was convinced that I had had a miscarriage and insisted that I see my OB immediately. I called and made an appt and bc there was no hcg level I felt like my dr blew me off. Even tho I had told him that I read ON THE MIRENA SITE that sometimes what happens is the egg fertillizes (baby) but themirena has thinned the uterine lining out so much that it has nothing to attach to and causes your body to "spontaneously abort" the baby very early on! He said there was no way to prove that that had or had not happened. I was very disappointed in the visit. He also proceeded to tellme that it would be at least 3 or 4 months before I could try to conceive again bc the lining was so thin that I could miscarry. He told me when he put it in that I could conceive immediately????? Regardless I got it OUT and now 2 weeks later every time I stand up I'm still having HUGE clots and massive bleeding. I've never been a pad wearer but tampons are a joke, they literally fall out after putting them in from the bleeding!!!! I'm soaking overnight pads! And not to mention the migraines I had and mood swings while it was in...I have felt better since getting it out but now am wondering if I'm going to bleed to death....????
Hi all
I thought that this was just me until I googled it and came across your comments. I had the mirena removed 1 week ago today my bleeding has since been awful. For 5 days i bled very heavily and now for the past 2 days I havent bled in the day time but at night time i again bleed heavily. I'm hoping to try for my 3rd child soon but this is killing the excitement. Due to other treatment that i have had i have been unable to try until now and now that it is safe i can do it!! :(
I also had my Mirena removed due to horrible side effects. I only had it in for 4 weeks and now 2 weeks later I am having ridiculously heavy bleeding. I have gone through a super tampon every hour on the hour for the past 2 days. I can't even sleep for more than a few hours at a time because of the mess that I wake up in. I have NEVER experienced bleeding like this, even after having both of my daughters. Can anyone tell me when their bleeding stopped and when I need to call the doctor?
I had my Mirena in for 5 years with no issues and no period. I had it removed 9/10/09. I had a blood test on 10/27 and no HCG levels detected and my period started the next day. I had the same heavy period as everyone else with crazy clots. On day 13 I called my doctor who put me on Provera to stop the heavy bleed. It tapered down and I had 1 day without a period at all and the next day it was back (this is an expected result of the Provera tapering off). Now I'm on day 10 of my new cycle. Its been 27 days of bleeding with only 1 day as a break.
I'm waiting for my doctor to call back since the holidays are coming and I'll be stuck with this for another week if they decide it won't end on its own. I don't know if the Provera was a mistake or not since my period came back exactly the same as before I was put on it.
However, the bright note is that the clotting tapered off in the past week and I get much much smaller clots - nothing to even worry about. Those huge clots were freaking me out.
The rule for when the blood loss is too fast is if you go through a maxi pad or tampon every hour. Then you are supposed to go to the emergency room. I was going through a super tampon every 2 hours and that wasn't quite bad enough to go to the ER. My doctor called in a bloodwork slip for me in case I was feeling like I'd lost too much blood so I could just go right in and get screened to make sure my blood loss wasn't too high.
Again - anyone want to post a follow up on when their bleeding stopped and when things were normal? I'm still waiting here.
I've felt fine though, eating plenty of red meat for the iron. I've had several leak-throughs from when I stand or sit and my pad couldn't not absorb the overflow fast enough. Makes me feel like I'm 13 again. And I've been really moody which I'm not sure if its the hormones or just being pissed at having my period for a month.
I've been tracking my temperature since the day my period started and for the first time in 2 weeks my temperature dropped from the 97.7-97.5 range to 97.0-96.8 - not sure if thats a good sign or if it means I'm now starting my 'real' period and will have another week of this. I'm hoping it means things are starting to work for me and this period will be over and we can try for that baby!
I'm also very disappointed because I'd been told I could get pregnant right away after having it out. I would have removed it months ago if I had known so we'd be ready to start trying now. Instead I'm stuck waiting this out, and then have to do the normal patient waiting since it can take several months of actively trying! So upset that I wasn't warned about this!
I had my Mirena removed over a month ago, after a year and a half. It was such a nightmare! Bad abdominal pains, went to the ER just to be told there was nothing they could find to be wrong. I started a period the day after I had it removed, lasting a full 4 days, I ovulated on time, and started my period again on a 30 day cycle. Although I hadn't had a period in well over a year, it felt as though something was wrong. I actually posted on a forum if it was possible to ovulate twice before my period came. My period lasted for 12 hours before it stopped. And for the five days I should have had a period, I had nothing, except for random "gushing" of blood. I would be standing up, at work, or at the most inopportune times, and it would feel like I had just peed myself, only to find out that I had a river of blood running down my leg. I don't recommend this birth control to anyone. Out of everything I have heard about it, and experienced, I have only had one person tell me they loved it.
I found out that my mirena iud had punctured my uterine wall and was sticking out beyond the wall into my abdominal cavity. The remaining iud had "grown" into the uterine wall as well. My insurance paid for it to be inserted, but would not pay for it to be removed even if medically necessary. After threatening lawyers on them, they finally approved the removal. The receptionist at my dr's office told me that alot of insurances only cover insertion of the mirena, but not the removal! That makes no sense to me, and my husband offered to try and remove it. But with all the problems the iud caused, I waited, and my dr removed it without any problems. He first told me though because of the puncture and it being grown into the uterus it may have to be surgically cut out, and they may have to a hysterectomy if the uterus is too traumatized. This is if he could not yank on it, and get it to come out on its own. Oh, and he said to take a mild pain med before coming to the appointment. Can you say "Ouch!" What satistic man came up with this contraception? I mean it hurt for the 20 minutes of insertion (I have tilted uterus) it took to get it put in, and had to lay with my butt off the table, and pointed up at the ceiling-that was a blast! I really wish my dr would have explained to me that most insurances don't cover the removal-how half assed is that, and that I could possibly end up having to get a hysterectomy to get it removed. I have my children, so I was ok with the possibility, but what if I was a young girl just trying to prevent getting pregnant and end up not getting to bear children because the dr didn't explain this to me? My dr pushed the mirena so much, and my friends were all getting the same urge as well from their own different dr's, so I do want to know what kind of kick back they got from the makers. My family wants me to sue the pants off my dr, my insurance company, and the maker of mirena, but I am not a sue happy person and just want to move on with my life. I wish I would have read into mirena more before making the decision, and I wish my dr wouldn't have been so bias when recommending this. It needs to be recalled and removed by the FDA.
This weekend was the worst ever. New years for me was a nightmere.
I had my IUD Merina removed on Thursday and had to beg my doctor to remove it. He was very reluctant and told me that I only had 2 years left and that I should keep it in. I asked him time and time again to remove it because it did not do what he promised it would do, which was to lighten my 8 day period to 3 days or none. In addition he had me on Loestrin 24 birth control pill to do what he said the Merina would do.
my husband and I had finally had enough and for the 6th time I called my doctor and demanded that it be removed. While on the table with my legs open he was still trying to persuade me to keep it in.
The day I took it out I felt great, I had regained my apetite and my sex drive was back yeahhh or so i thought until Saturday morning when I started bleeding perfusely. I thought I was having a miscarriage, cloths bigger and heavier than I can imagine. The I woke up on Sunday and was just spotting so i thought good my body had expelled everything that was held up in me for three years- Well I was wrong while cooking in the kitchen on Sunday I had an incident bigger than the first.
Today I'm at work weraing my sister's maternity pads. I'm not even going to call my doctor because I'm sure he will continue to sign praises about Merina. NEVER!!!!!!! again.
Good luck ladies, when will someone in the government (FDA) say no to the experimental drugs they're putting out there. Hope no death occured due to it's use.
My Merina fall out 12/31/09 I too had some really heavy bleeding, mine went on for 10 days on and off. blood clots to light days. I think now 12 days out Im back to normal. I went to my OBGYN on the Jan 6th she said that this is normal and that my body is going through withdraws of the progesterone. It gets better but everyone is different BABY DUST!!
In Feb 2005 when my 3rd son was 2mo I had the Merina IUD inserted (without pain) after getting pregnant on bc pills, depo and the patch it was my last resort. I always had a heavy period that lasted 5 days. I had the IUD in place for nearly 5yrs and have not had a period since insertion. I also have not experienced any of the side affects. I also did not get pregnant. So I was very happy..... until I had to have it removed as we decided to have one more child, my youngest turned 5 last month. So on Jan 06 2010 I had it removed (painlessly) no initial bleeding that day. The next morning was herendous heavy bleeding, HUGE clots that I can feel coming out. soooo gross! OMG, and the cramping is worse then I ever remember. I have to sleep with a heating pad and wake up in a pool of blood in less then 3hrs, well I am wearing a PAD and Tampon!! I can't even go to the store without, " leaking" through my clothes. This is horrible and feels like its never gonna end. It is now Jan 12th will be the 13th in a few minutes and am wondering if, I too am gonna bleed to death. Don't even know if this is my period or when I finally stop am I then gonna have a period? When all I want is to be pregnant!! Hopeful and Hurting
I am having the same issues stated above am on my second very heavy flow after removal, which showed up 4 days later than it started the month before after removal. My doctor is aware and gave me an ultrasound after the last heavy period to assure me everything was ok in side and asked me to track the next period. The constant flow is rather annoying, but I hope it is shorter than last months 13 day period. On the plus side I have a close friend who removed her Mirena in October and was experiencing very heavy flows and was pregnant in January. So we all should stay positive that the flow will end soon, and our bodies will regulate back to normal.
Yikes !!! Dittos on all of the bleeding and clotting. I wish I had been told this before I had it put in. I had it for 4.5 years when suddenly I started bleediing heavy and clotting. I went to have it checked and it was missing in action. I had an ultrasound and an X-Ray and they never found it. My doctor said it probably passed in the bleeding. After a 5 day relief from the heavy bleeding, I sneezed while at the grocery store and WHAM!, I pretty much exploded into another heavy flow with back to back clotting. I am wearing a POISE OVERNIGHT pad because even super maxi is useless. I am hoping that it will slow down because I am afraid to go to bed bleeding this heavy. Needless to say, I will never view my doctors suggestions the same way again. He promised me that this was safe and even benefitial for my body. NEVER EVER EVER NEVER AGAIN !!!! I feel like my body is rebelling at the fact that it had been suppressed for so long. And boy is it making me pay. I don't know what I was thinking.
I took mine out on 2/18/10 and started spotting immediately after removal. it is not 2/25/10...and this bleeding is disgusting. I am going through a super plus tampon in about 3 hours...so embarrassing i had to leave work early yesterday because i soaked right through onto my pants...i've never had heavy periods and i only brought one extra tampon with me to work...WHEN DOES THIS END?????
I had my Mirena removed on Wed, 2/24 after about 2.5 years, during which I had no problems (I thought). I was told that it would probably take a month or two for my body to return to normal and that I may not experience a normal cycle for a while. For about the past week I have had a stuffy nose, cough, etc. So I thought nothing of it when on Thur I felt worse. I just assumed I was getting sicker. I was nauseated and my body was really sore. After I took my son to preschool that morning I came back home and slept all day (I felt like a terrible mom for it) and when I woke up I didnt feel any better. That night my boyfriend said that maybe it was all from the Mirena removal. I considered it but dismissed it quickly because I was not advised that this could happen nor had I read about it anywhere. Fri I felt a little better but was still nauseated, tired, and stuffy (but that is legitimately from my cold). I woke up this morning, Sat, and as soon as I sat on the toilet I passed a large amount of small clots and blood. For the first few hours I was up this morning I used 3 super tampons. I had to make a run to the drug store as soon as they opened to get more. For about the past 2 years I have not had a period hardly at all. From time to time I would spot but thats it. I was always happy with the Mirena. I didnt have the hair loss, cramps, headache, etc that I see many of the posters up here reporting. Now that I think about it though I have gained a considerable amount of weight over these past 2.5 years (about 40 lbs) which I had attributed all to stress. (I have been in nursing school since my son was born, I just graduated. RN now, woo hoo!) Also, my face has broken out more than ever before over this time. I also attributed this to stress. But now that I think about it I feel that it may be related to Mirena. Not only from a consumers perspective but from a professional's as well, I have never heard of some of these side effects during treatment of after removal. I truly believe that some of our doctors are not aware of them either. I clearly remember learning about various birth control in my OB class. I paid special attention to Mirena since I had it at the time. None of these things were mentioned in the book. I feel like it is a dirty truth that the makers of Mirena are keeping behing closed doors so that women will still want to use this and so that physicians and nurses will continue to recommend it. We all need to continue to report these findings to our physicians becuase they are legally obligated to then report it to the makers of Mirena, whether it be a problem we experienced while using it or after removal. It makes sense to have some heavy bleeding after removal it just would have been nice to have been forewarned. It was scary to see that massive amount of blood coming out of me. Well anyway, sorry to rant. I hope everyone stops bleeding soon.
Glad I found this thread. I only had the Mirena inserted for three weeks. I experienced spotting and clots for the entire three weeks it was in along with cramping, and into the third week I noticed my chest was very tight. The chest tightness was what scared me enough to get this removed. Luckily my doctors saw me right away and removed it the same day I called. I mentioned the above side effects, and they said the spotting and cramping was normal, but they had never heard of chest tightness being associated with Mirena. I'm very active, 33 years old, and experienced this on a long run ... scared me quite a bit.
After removal I noticed a huge amount of blood loss...which will be causing me to run to the store in about 1 hour to pick up iron pills and more tampons.
Hoping this subsides quickly. I'll never recommend Mirena to anyone, and will be writing a letter to my doctor with the list of side effects while the Mirena was inserted and after removal.
I hope everyone recovers from this horrible form of birth control. This product shouldn't be allowed on the market.
i had the iud put in sept.09...the insertion wuz painful n i bleed non stop n had the worst cramps...i talked 2 my doc n he said it wuz normal..the cramping n bleedn lastd 4 three months...i thought i wuz goin 2 die bein that i am a person that trys 2 ride things out n hope its gets better. Jan.10 the cramping went away n my flow wuz real light. I had it removed 2days ago n thought i wuz goin 2 go thru it all over again. after visitn this site i knw its a high possibility!! I havnt experienced not even spotting yet!!! Hopefully it stays that way!! Thnx 4 the heads up!!! Cause the doc never gave me any warnings!!
I just wanted to update this board. I had the mirena removed, and bled like post-pregnancy for 4 days: heavy and passing clots. I was worried about the blood loss, but everything seems to be okay since. Hope that helps! :o) Good luck ladies!
I had the Mirena about 3 years ago I bled so much when it was in me that it came out! after i seen the doctor every since then my periods are horrible! i dont bleed for months at a time then when i do bleed i bleed for months at a time striaght!!!!!!! and the flow of blood is so heavy and i constantly pass clots! now im seeing a doctor because it may be something eles going on but i said enough is enough! this lastime i bled for over 90 days!!!! but it all started after the Mirena.... Good Luck!
I just joined this group today while online searching for some answers as to why I was bleeding so heavily and passing blood clots, first off let me say that I have fibroids and I have tried just about all contraceptives to help try shrinking the. I had the Mirena placed in me on 2/26/2010 and the night berore I had to take some medicine which would open up my cervix( which I found out is a pill they give patients to help them have miscarriages) I spotted the morning I had the Mirena put in and I stopped bleeding for 1 day. The very next day the bleeding was moderate, it seemed like I was having a normal cycle until it wouldn't stop, after the second week I couldn't take it anymore my husband was not understanding and neither was I. I called my Doctor's office and told them what was going on and my Nurse Practioner which is the one who installed my Mirena told me that I could possibly bleed up to ten weeks before it stops and then I may or may not have a cycle. I was never told I could bleed for that long or I would have never gotten it. The Mirena releases Progestrone which causes some if not all women to bleed. I started noticing that I was going through 6 pads a day due to the heavier bleeding I was having, I was due back for my months check up any way in a few days and then I started bleeding even heavier passing blood clots and going through ten pads a day. My Doctor and immediate Utra Sund and X Ray the day I went to my appointment because the N.P. gave me a Pelvic Exam to see if bthe device was tearing my uterus but she couldn't feel it. The X Ray determined that the device fell out on it's own. I was blleding so bad that I had to be put on Iron Pills, a pill by the name of Megestrol (which is to stop the bleeding) the meds haven't stppedthebleedcompletely it only made it lighter, I'm going to invest in some Kimberly Clarke Stocks since I'm already investing my money in pads anyway. I return to my OB Doctor this week to discuss my options about this terrible bleeding. IF I would have been told all of the details and the side effects at my consultation I would have NEVER had the Mirena placed in my body.
I had my mirena removed about 4 days ago and I have had heavy bleeding and bad cramps ever since. I just soaked through a tampon in about 45 mins and there was a huge clot when I wiped. If I soak through this tampon in the same amount of time I'm going to the ER. Regardless I'm calling my Gyno in the morning because he told me upon removal of mirena I might just have some spotting.....boy was he off! all in all, I'm really happy I don't have that stupid thing inside me anymore. For the first 2 months all I did was continuously spot. Then the last two months I had a constant bacterial vaginosis infection! I took the antibiotic by mouth twice and the vaginal gel antibiotic once and it never went away, then the nurse recommended I get the mirena taken out, but the doctor wanted me to keep it in! It's amazing to me that mirena hasn't been taken off the market
As I said in my previous post, I had mirena placed in July '09. I just had it removed 4 days ago. Yesterday I started my period. Today started the HEAVY bleeding and WOW the clots. I have never had a period like this. The closest was after I had my daughter. The clots are best described as above ... "blobs". I can feel a gush of blood every time I stand up. I can barely make it to the toilet. It is so disgusting! Tampons are useless because I am bleeding too heavy. This morning I was going through pads every half hour with horrible cramps and back pain, but it seems to have let up a little this evening. I am going to give my hormones time to get back to normal. I will be adding some vitamins and anything that will help my heath. I am just happy to have mirena out and hope that we are able to start trying for a baby this summer. :)
WOW! I thought getting off the pill was what I needed to do, at age 44. The doctor at Plan Parenthood was so excited to put that thing in me. I should have known better. I only had it for about 3 months. The weight gain, depression and the worst hair loss I have ever had in my life!. I also ended up with a hard growth on my uterus. I went in had it removed. I was bleeding so bad that when I called the doctor she put me on a medication to stop the bleeding. It di, how ever when I was done with that pill and started my birth control again, with in a day I was bleeding more then before. I have never been so scared. I bleed more then when I had my 2 kids. I was happy yet sad to find this blog. Happy to know that I was not the only one, yet sad to see that I am not the only one. I would love to send this blog to that company. Thank you all for your stories! I hope to stop bleeding soon!
I am just so glad I found this thread cuz I am in desperate need of answers. I took my mirena out on May 7th and 2 weeks later (May 19th) it started this crazy HEAVY period. Two days later, it stopped and I thought it was gone. But I was wrong. The next day, all came back again and so so heavy with huge clots. I am scared, I am angry. All I want is to get pregnant and now I dont even know when this is going to stop.
I always had heavy periods for the first two days of my period but then 4 other light days. This was before putting Mirena in. Then I had Mirena for almost 2 years now.
Someone help. I read all your comments and I am glad I'm not alone..but still scared. It's been 9 days since it started the heavy bledding. I am going through pad AND tampons so quickly....maybe changing every 2 hours or so.
I hope it stops anytime soon and I can start trying to conceive again.

I was booked in to have a laparoscopy to remove endometriosis and they were putting mirena in at the same time, I was told to expect some light cramping and bleeding after the procedure so on the 21 of may 2010 I had the procedure done, that day and a couple if days after I was sore and bleeding but thought it was normal due to what I had done, then on the 3rd day I started having the most severe cramps that I was taking panadine forte every 4 hours but that wasn't doing anything, I was also having other symptoms like dizzy spells, seeing things and was grumpy all the time, 1 week after having mirena put in I went to my doctor to get it out as I put all the symptoms I was having down to the mirena, my doctor removed it, an hour after having it taken out I started bleeding pretty heavy but just thought this was normal, I'm now on day 2 of having it out and and bleeding so severly( going through a pad every half hour) also feelig very weak and sick. Question is when is it time to go to doctors about the bleeding as losing this much blood can't be good, very worried. Am so glad I found this post the makers of mirena need to be informed of all this to stop other ppl having to go throught this horrible experience. Am still having severe cramping and bleeding and spending all my time laying on the couch on pain relief. When will I feel good again???
An update, I continued to bleed constantly after having the mirena out, had it out saturday lunch time and started bleeding straight away, Sunday afternoon was still in severe pain and bleeding alot( a pad every 30-40 mins) I ended ip going to the emergancy as I was worried about the amount of blood I had lost, test were done and was put on a drip as my blood pressure was extremely low, tests came back I have a severe infection in my uterus and cervix didn't close properly after having mirena taken out, am now on very high dose of antibiotics and have to go get and ultrasound to make sure there is no damage done from it. Still in pain and bleeding but that should get better once the antibiotics start working. Getting mirena was the worst thing I've ever done and wish I had never got it.
Getting mirena was good untill 2 weeks after I took it out. Other than that, it was heaven!!!
I bled really heavy but never had any pain..so I would worry if I had any pain and would go to the doctor.
I also felt a little weak. Friday night I made beans and lots of beets to eat to get some iron. I felt much better.
Then Saturday it was gone...after 10 days of heavy bleeding. I am so happy now.
Back to ttc. :)
I dont know why I got this new user name: bprice
I am the same as Beka
Thank you so much to all of you for posting here. It's nice to know I'm not going to bleed to death, because it sure feels like I will.
I got the Mirena inserted 3 months ago - for the same reasons many of you did, besides birth control promises of shorter periods (mine had been lasting 14 days or more). For the past 3 months I have bled/spotted every day and have had cramping at least a few days a week.
The last few days my bleeding has been getting heavier and the cramping has me doubled over. Ibuprofen isn't taking the pain away. This morning the blood and scary clots just started gushing out of me - I eventually expelled the IUD... (yup, it just fell right out of me).
I've been bleeding extremely heavily (an Ultra tampon every 1-2 hours) and the clots are just insane. I'm between jobs and have no health insurance. So I am so glad I found this site and know that this is "normal", before I rush to the ER.
The Mirena has been a nightmare, I'm glad it's out, but I'm really bummed this insane bleeding could go on for days... I guess this is one way to insure I don't get pregnant... :-(
I had the Merina in for 3 years. I too was told it was the best birth control for dealing with a heavy period. I have not had any good reactions to any birth control pills in the past but the Dr. assured me that this would NOT be like any of them. For the 1st year my period was constant, again the Dr assured me that it would level off and that some people take longer to adjust. Year two..ok my period only lasts 10-14 days with occasional spotting in between. Horrible, horrible cramping, lower back contractions, and headaches galore. Sooo the Dr told me it's okay you will just need to come in monthly for blood tests to make sure u not becoming anemic. Good news is it is an effective birth control because you always have your period and your always too tired to want to have sex in the first place...lol
I just recently hit the three year mark and happened to be having a particularily heavy period. I was awoke by awful cramps and flooding. Low and behold in a blood clot the size of a tangerine was my Merina. GOOD RIDDANCE!!! Im on day 7 of this period and the bleeding seems to be getting lighter. I also have lost 6 lbs and am feeling more energetic and alert. No more synthetic hormones for me ever again!!!
Wow. i had my mirena removed 6/3/10. I had it inserted in October of 08. It seemed great at first. Then in March of 09 i was hospitalized with my first of many migraines. I never had such headaches before in my life and this one lasted 47 days. Never had them before. i lost 22 pound after having my daugther in May of 08. I have regained all that weight, have no sex drive, utterly depressed ,etc, etc. Feeling like my blood is just sludging thru my veind. I eventually took myself off of every med I was taking ( anti depressant, blodd pressure) and still felt horrible. Then I found these lovely websites with all of these post about Mirena. I made an appt with my obgyn who tried to talk me out of having it removed. I had made concerns about it known at my yealry and she said none of my issues were the mirena. BULL !! I am currently bleeding like crazy. And am exhausted. But am sincerely hoping that this removal is the answer to my prayers. Than's for sharing. This site has been most helpful!!- BeanmamaJ
hey girl,
I had my IUD removed on the 11th of June,2010 after having it in place for 2yrs and 3months...when removed it has been a whole 5days of heavy bleeding and to many clots for my liking, and extreme bloating and left sided pain for the first 4days, but now its starting to lighten up with little signs of clots... plus my obgyn said it was normal and my body was just flushing its self out!!!!
Had my Mirena inserted on 3/31/10 and removed on 6/10/10 because my doc did an ultrasound during a follow-up check-up when I complained I was still constantly bleeding/spotting non-stop and found that somehow the hormones released by the device was causing my fibroids to enlarge by twice it's previous size. Has anyone had the same experience? Of course, this freaked me out coz my doc said if it continues at this growth rate, I would need surgery to remove the fibroids OR my other option was to remove the Mirena right away. While on Mirena, I was also given two oral medications (tranexamic acid and Yasmin birth control pills) which BOTH did NOT work in stopping the bleeding. Needless to say, I opt for the removal of the IUD but was never warned by my doc of the side affects afterwards.
Right after the removal of the Mirena, my brown spotting immediately turned to red and slightly heavier but bearable. Thank goodness I stopped by the drug store on my way home from the hospital to pick up extra overnight pads in case it got worse, something the doc never warned me about but I figured since I was always a heavy bleeder. The next 3 days, the bleeding did get heavier but started to lighten up towards the end so I didn't think much of it. All of a sudden while I was at the mall towards the end of day 3 watching my kids ice skate, a sudden "gush" occurred and I rushed into the toilet to replace my overnight pad thinking I was safe for the next 2-3 hours. Boy... was I wrong! While I stood there for less than 30 minutes, I not only bled through the NEW overnight pad but also through my panties, jeans, tunic, a sweatshirt I tied around my waist as the blood leaked down to the bottom of my leg! More than a dozen "gushes" that felt like uncontrollable waterfall or "peeing" with major clotting which I could feel come out of me as I stood there not knowing what to do.
I managed to rush home making a mess in the car, the floors, my bathroom, everywhere! There was so much blood I thought I was going to die. I phoned my husband who rushed back from work and took me into the ER. The doc gave me a pelvic exam, ultrasound, and blood test. I was sent home with more medication to stop the bleeding. 3 days after this incident, my bleeding has finally stopped! Hurray!
But that's not the end of my experience with Mirena... the docs asked me to come in to review my blood tests. They found that my body wasn't producing any hormones and was hoping this was associated with the heavy bleeding which may or may not be my normal menstrual cycle and only until my next period would they be able to determine that. The doc also said my hemoglobin level is VERY low and that I needed to take iron supplements but to also come back next month for another blood test to see if I'm still anemic.
So to answer most people's question about the bleeding after the removal of Mirena, mine stopped after 6 days but bled as soon as I got it removed on that day. It's so nice to be period-free for a change which seems ridiculous bc that was the main reason why I opt to have Mirena inserted into me but it didn't work at all. It was only AFTER I had another follow-up appt. by a different OG/GYN doc was I informed that my fibroids could be the cause of the constant bleeding while on Mirena and that it may not work for me. If I had known earlier, then why bother to try it at all and save everyone the pain, suffering and cost? Does anyone also have a doctor who has warned you Mirena might not be affective on you if you have fibroids growing in certain areas of your uterus? I wished I had known sooner and hope this new information can help someone else make a better choice as to whether or not Mirena is right for them.
I had my mirena taken out on 6/16/10 after having it in for about a year (5/14/09) i had it put in 6wks after having my second baby...i was made aware of spotting in between periods and that after 3 months it would stop but boy were they wrong i bled for 3wks out of a month every month up til january 2010 where i bled all the way up til i had it removed....i had spotting on the day they removed it and was fine til i woke up friday morning....i was getting my kids ready for day care and had a gushing feeling....when i got to the bathroom i saw that i was bleeding heavy....when i ask my doctor doctor at time of removal should i expect bleeding i was told no only spotting for a day or two....i have heavy bleeding with huge clots...i am glad to know that im not the only one who has experience this.....wish they would of warned me about this before
I pray that all women tell all their friends about the TRUTH about this drug business! My mirena was coming out in the shower Wednesday June 23rd and by today the 26th I am bleeding like I have neve before in my life! I don't want to die! I just had a baby 16 months ago. The only reason I put this thing in in the first place was because I didn't want to have a baby to fast after my first and I don't take pills right. I always forget. It is really ashame all the things "we" women go thru to prevent periods and pregencies. I have gone thru three supe tampons in 45 minutes!! It is 10:30 at night and I am supe afraid to go to sleep. I have a family I have a daughter a husband...... Why don't doctors tell us the truth. What happens if I can't give my husband an other baby..... Lets Pray
God,
Please put mercy on all the women and their bodies and their minds. Please help us to get thru this horible time in our lives and to give us the voices to speak up and tell each other what to do. Heal our bodies so that we may continue to give you more happy and healthy babies. Please help all the husbands to stand and protect and comfort their wives or women as they go thru this time. Heal us, love us AMEN!
I just had my mirena taken out 6/22/10 and did not get my period until today 7/28/10 over a month later. I have been doubling up on tampons and pads since i've been bleeding through both every half hour. Also some severe cramping and migrane and I almost had a heart attack when a huge blood clot came out today! My doctor took me off the mirena when it began causing heart issues, I would get severe pain in my chest, dizziness and nausea. When I had the mirena in it was wonderful, my periods were really light, if at all and I had no cramping. But the after effects are a nightmare. If I had known about this I would have skipped this birth control option all together.
