I had Mirena put in on Monday at noon and had it removed on Wednesday at 4:30. The time in between was awful. First, the IMPLANTATION (and don't let anyone tell you it's an INSERTION - it's IMPLANTED) was honestly the worst pain I've ever had. It compares to slamming your finger in a door. My eyes immediately teared and I kind of screamed and jumped. The dr. said "It'll only hurt like that one more time." WHAT???? Sure enough, it hurt like that again, then it was in. Then the cramping started. It continued through that day, eased up, hurt a bit the next day. Then my stomach started hurting, and I began developing a bruise on my skin on top of where the Mirena was. It felt as if it were trying to push its way out through my skin. The next day I woke up feeling almost normal, but that afternoon thought I was in labor. Was crying, couldn't take deep breaths or it would REALLY hurt, severe cramps worse than any menstrual cramps I've ever had (and I've had BAD ones). My husband called the doctor and I went right over and had it removed. Within 1-2 minutes I felt normal again. What upsets me the most is not the promotional piece of literature that only told me the benefits, but the fact that my gyno presented it as The Device That Would End All of my Problems. I would expect a more fair assessment from a doctor. It ended up being her partner who removed it, and he said, "Mirena's not for everybody." I really wish it had been presented in a more unbiased way upfront. Anyway, the pain is over now and I'm taking Loestrin. My advice would be to just REALLY SERIOUSLY consider what you are doing before you get this device, and be ready to have it removed if it doesn't work out for you.

Oh my gosh I feel your pain. It is comforting to have someone else speak up! I agree. I was not told all of the complications and when I did present the problems they were dismissed. I am waiting on normal again. I will be hoping the same for you.

I am in the same boat right now. I have remained abstinent for 11 years and am about to be married in only 50 day! My son from a previous marriage is 18 years old. When I was looking for a birth control option, I decided on Mirena for many reasons. I was told there wasn't much weight gain and that the low levels of hormones that go straight to the uterus don't cause as many mood swings. The best part for me was that I wouldn't have to worry about anything for 5 years and most likely wouldn't even be bothered with a period. I am wondering now why I never read these blogs. Insertion was extremely painful for me and I was told that it wouldn't be. From day one, I was in a lot of pain. I was told that there would be mild cramping for awhile, but for 2 weeks I was in some extreme pain and there were nights that I just layed there and cried on the couch. One evening I told my Fiance to be ready to take me to the emergency room. The pain was as severe as a late state miscarriage I had 14 years prior. I didn't bleed for the first week, but now I have been bleeding for 15 days straight - not too heavy, but real steady. The severe pain has subsided, but for the last two weeks now, I have a constant ache and occassional bouts of stronger cramping. I am drained, emotional, and at first I wasn't sure if it was because I am also trying to plan a wedding, but I am usually not an angry person, but lately I have been snapping at my Fiance and then am crying. I feel like a mess. I've decided I have to get it out and do something different quickly before my wedding night. Thank you ladies for sharing your stories. Take care & God Bless!
