Hi, I'm really sorry for your problem. I wish I knew exactly what would help us because I seem to be developing a similar problem.
I would like to mention that maybe you have built a tolerance to the dosage you've been taking so long, therefore it could explain the chest pains. This medication has what is called a rebound effect, meaning that you just can't stop taking it or you may experience chest pain and even suffer a heart attack. This information is on the AstraZeneca website, the makers of Toprol.
I'd bet my last dollar that a doctor would probably want to increase your dosage if you mention any of this, and I don't think that would be the better solution. I personally hope to get off this medication as soon as I can find a doctor to safely help me do so. If I even dare cut back I notice my chest hurts within hours of doing so and it scares me. I was originally put on it for an irregular heartbeat three years ago, and the side effects have been worse than my heartbeat problem.
I don't know if you have tried other medications, but perhaps your doctor might consider something else. The most important thing to remember is that if you do drop this medication, BE SURE to be careful in how you wean off of it. A good doctor should know this, and if the one you deal with doesn't I would go somewhere else. I feel certain that if not stopped properly it can be dangerous.
P.S. I also know about that 'bad feeling'. It is understandable that this would worry any normal person. I don't think most doctors really do understand, and if you dare mention it they want to put you on a psych. medication as well...more medication is just not a good answer...in my humble opinion.
I wish you luck, and would be interested in knowing how you work this problem out...take care, JC
