I've been on synthroid now for about a year. My dosage is VERY little (0.075). My doctor keeps running blood tests every 3 months and assures me I am within the "lower-end" of the norm, but I still feel tired, sleep deprived, wake up with night-sweats and I keep gaining weight... I am only 24 and have just been told that I need to take this medication for the rest of my life, it\s pretty depressing. I keep asking if there are other ways to lose weight and feel more energized. He tells me that I need to keep taking this medication and has put me on a "sleep hygeine" routine where I go to bed and wake up at the same time every day. Does this "disease" mean I will always be overweight and tired for the rest of my life? I would like to know if someone else with more experience with this medication can give any sort of advice? Feeling a little hopeless about it and not really interested in complaining to my doctor anymore. Thanks:)

Sounds like your doctor keeps testing your TSH, and when my doctor did it, I never felt well. And Synthroid never helped either. I finally found out about Armour from the stop the thyroid madness site and changed, and my life changed a LOT. Check it out.

No you won't be overweight and feeling crappy all your life. I was very discouraged when I wrote in April and I felt the way you say you do. I started eating differently and exercising more. I eat more protein and less carbs. I cut out sweets and eat grapes and plums. When I crave chocolate I eat a fudgesicle. I am happy to report that I've lost all of the weight although it took a full year and strenuous dieting and exercise. I try and stick to more protein, no fried foods, no junk food, and I am now just starting to eat out. When I eat chinese food, I order my food steamed with brown rice. I do eat pizza, but limit it to two slices max. I eat salad every night and smaller portions of our main courses. Have faith! Your body WILL get back to what it once was. My hair is still dropping to the floor and onto my keyboard, but it seems to be getting somewhat better. My doctor tells me what all of your doctors do - and we really hate when he says it - 'It will take time." There is a rainbow at the end of your tunnel. Try changing your diet and let me know how it goes. Be patient!

melie_k, Hi,

I'VE BEEN ON THIS CRAP(synthroid) AS I CALL IT SINCE AGE 34 & I'M NOW JUST TURNED 5O. THEY, DRS. HAVE BEEN INCREASING MY DOSE ALONG THE WAY & NOW I'M TAKING 200 MCG. MY SYMPTOMS REMAIN THE SAME, NOTHING HAS CHANGED IN 16 YEARS & I HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCING HEART PALPATATION @ THIS HIGHER DOSE. I'VE DECIDED ENOUGH ALREADY & AM SEEKING "ALTERNATIVE" MEASURES IN DEALING WITH THIS PROBLEM.
IT USE TO BE MOSTLY ABOUT MY WEIGHT(VANITY), BUT NOW IT'S MORE SO ABOUT HOW I FEEL, WHICH IS LIKE A PILE OF S#$T. TO ME, IF THIS MED IS WORKING THESE SYMPTOMS SHOULD NOT BE A PROBLEM. I'M TIRED OF BEING TIRED & TIRED OF BEING AN EXPERMENT OR GUINEA PIG.

MAIN STREAM MEDICINE HAS NO CLUE WHEN IT COMES TO THYROID ISSUES. IT IS ONE OF THE MOST UNDER DIAGNOSED PROBLEMS & THE WORST TREATED OUT THERE. YOU NEED TO SEE AN ALTERNATIVE DR. MAINSTREAM DOCTORS JUST PEDDLE PILLS THE BIG PHARMACUTICALS TELL THEM TO!

DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH VIA THE NET, EDUCATE YOURSELF & THEN FIND A DR. THAT PRACTICES ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE ALONE OR TOGETHER WITH MAIN STREAM MEDICNE.

REMEMBER: THE SQEEKY WHEEL GETS OILED!

Please don't give up, I too have been struggling with getting my thyroid regulated, current dosage is Synthroid 112mcg. Seems I need to increase meds every few months or so. Part of the depression you are feeling is likely coming from having an undertreated thyroid. Even after all this time I still have a tendency to explain away my symptoms, I'm tired because of allergies or I'm getting headaches due to sinuses, and I'm depressed because I'm stressed, I'm tired from lack of sleep, etc....only to realize that my symptoms are all thyroid related. My thyroid is currently in the so-called "normal" range but I feel awful. Just called the doc for an increase in dosage. You must stay on top of it and figure out at what TSH level you feel best. I don't feel good unless I'm at .5-.7. You MUST find a doctor who is willing to check it often and keep you at YOUR optimal level. The first question I asked my latest endo was "how will decide what my medication should be?" and he said he could take me all the way down to .5 unless I show signs of being hyper, which I have not. You'll be amazed at how good you can feel and how the weight will start to drop with proper dosing. I can't understand how a sleep hygiene could work. If you are hypo then likely you probably can't control when you sleep. The last time my TSH levels reached 2.9 I was sleeping over 10 hrs a day and depressed with headaches all the time. I was afraid I would lose my job because I struggled to wake up in the mornings. Don't be afraid to change doctors if yours does not listen you...that's the most important thing. And don't let them explain away your symptoms. Once my meds increased the last time I felt better within 1 week and everyone (family and coworkers) noticed. Only you know when you are feeling better and don't let some doctor tell you otherwise!

dd1024, you need to be on Armour. Google the Stop the Thyroid Madness site. It's very good, and the book is even better. My life changed because of it.

i am 33 and it took years for one of my doctors to figure out my thyriod problem and it has been up and down ever since. It is something you will have to live with and deal with forever and yes it is very depressing. Just take care of yourself and keep and good exercise and diet routine and you will be fine...i wish I had better more up lifting news but I was 175 lbs. average then around 195 lbs. when I starting a regular workout routine to help with the muscle pain and joint pain and now 7 years later I am 220+lbs. and tired all of the time and my last test was over 500 and the highest my doctors has ever seen...eat right and take the meds because the flip side can be a daily nightmare that is worse then taking a little pill everyday....

Hi,
75mcg is a very low dose, he needs to increase your meds. You shouldn't have to suffer at the "low end" of normal, the goal is to be "normal". Everyone should be at mid range not low end range. Ask him to increase it and see if that helps.
