I've been taking Adderall XR 30mg per day for two years. I've gained 20 pounds and feel terrible. My doctor keeps telling me he doesn't know why I'm gaining weight. That is making me feel even worse!!! Can anyone tell me what's going on??? I also take Wellburtin & Lexapro. Before I took any of these medications, I asked the doctor if I could gain weight from them. He told me that these particular drugs do not cause weight gain. The thing that's so frustrating is, I was put on these drugs for anxiety and depression (results of an abusive marriage). How can I begin to feel better about myself if I'm gaining lots of weight? That just kills it for me. Can anyone out there offer some advice? My doctor won't even let me take an appetite suppressant. I take Adderall in the A.M. If I want, I can go right back to bed and sleep again. I also get hunger pains about 2 hours later!!! Help!!

Generally Adderall does not result in weight gain. However, both Wellbutrin and Lexapro do list weight gain as potential side effects. If you are on both of these drugs at the same time then this should explain your weight gain. You have to weigh the pros and cons to determine if it is worth staying on the medications. Good Luck to you! R

My son is on Adderall XR 15 mg a day. He has been on it for about 3 years now. He has lost weight being on it. It has been used as an appetite suppressant. I think the problem may be the Lexapro. I work with someone that starting taking it and within 18 months gained about 40 pounds. She checked with her doctor and he said that some people will gain weight with the Lexapro. Hope that helps...

Dextroamphetamine sulfate was(is) used as a diet pill, and used to be used as a generic alternative to Adderall before there were generic amphetamine salt combos on the market.. Sometimes it is still specifically prescribed instead of Adderall. Anyway, point being, amphetamines in general definitely decrease appetite, and are known to cause loss in weight. I've never heard of it doing the opposite, and I'd doubt it's what is causing you to.

I've been on adderall xr since i was about 7 years old. I was never heavy until I went off of it the summer i graduated High school. I went from 102 to 150 in about 3 months without changing my diet or exercise. i'm only 5'0', so that a huge amount of weight'!!! then I went back on it and lost a lot of weight, back doen to 120, and then it crept back on me. I'm still on Adderall XR and I'm back to 150...the really hard part is I work at a job where i walk fast 8-12 hours a day and I never eat...I have no idea what is making me fat and I've tried everything to control it!!! The doctor also put me on antidepressants, but I went off of them because I thought it was making me gain weight...So While I cant help you, I too feel your pain...let me know if you figure anything out or if you just need someone to vent to from time to time, just email me... I'll try anything to lose this weight...
Good luck

Hello. I also have this problem. (I've gained 20 lbs in the past two years.) From what I've read on other message boards, the problem is that, when you take Adderall, you don't eat as much as usual. So, when you don't take it, and you do eat, your metabolism is lowered. Also, people tend to overeat when they're not on Addderall, making up for all the food they didn't eat. Also -- I know this is a problem with me -- I exercise religiously when I'm not on Adderall. WHen I take it, however, I do not exercise. Doesn't help with metabolism. Any thoughts?

wow. are you still on the adderall? you can email me at xtremedi@hotmail.com to chat, but i find that really weird you gained weight. it was not from the adderall i can assure you. maybe the combination of the 3 or something, adderrall has helped me to lose weight because it supresses the appetite big time. i've heard that adderall was used as a weight loss pill before they realized it helps with focus and organization. find out more about the other pills!!!! or if you are allergic to something because speed will not make you gain/other way around. ha ha... hope you are doing better?! -d

also wanted to know if anyone out there can help on this topic. my girlfriends son is around 9 and on prozak and i think adhd meds. he is always antisocial, down on himself, etc. he has tried probably over 20 meds, you name it he's tried it, riddilin, adderall, lexapro, etc. nothing seems to work for his depression and low self esteem. he has gone to psychs and has been on meds and nothing seems to help him???? right now, he currently has been pulling out his eyelashes. on all the other meds, he had suicidal thoughts, and bloody thoughts, so he is off all the ones that made him crazy. any suggestions on something natural, vitamins, certain foods, etc. ???? -a concerned friend
