I am 32 years old, and still have acne. I have been taking it for almost 14 years now. I know that Lamictal causes skin rashes. I asked my neurologist if Lamictal causes acne. He said no. I will never be able to get rid of acne, as long as I keep taking it. I have been seizure-free for over 2.5 years now. Dad won't let me get off of it, and be on primidone only. It's more important to keep driving seizure-free, than to have clear skin.

Lamictal DOES cause acne, so does Abilify, Topamax, and ANY anti-seizure med. I just found out myself. I am 43, with worsening acne. lol I have migraines and am on a mix of these meds for that! With each med they add my acne gets worse. Now it's on my neck and chest. I'm trying to get off some of these meds due to other side effects....Lamictal is the one I want to stay on...if I don't itch, like last time i tried it....we're starting with a real low dose and adding very slowly, and not going too high at all. We'll see. I know the acne stinks, but being seizure- free for you is the greater benefit! Good luck!

I said, "I wonder if shouldn't bother seeing a dermatologist anymore" to Dr. Huls. She asked if I don't like her. I told her what Dr. Knuteson told me. He was my first dermatologist. Dr. Knuteson said that some of my meds cause acne. I told him that I HAVE to take Lamictal, for my seizures. I called Dr. Huls' office today, after doing research last night. I want to ask about using Vitamin A, since I have to keep taking Lamictal. I'll be seeing her next week. I wonder if I should stop seeing a dermatologist all together. Since I have to continue taking Lamictal and primidone, plus other meds; there is no hope of ever getting rid of this acne. I don't want to look like a pimplehead, for the rest of my life. I can't get a job, due to seizures for 28.5 years. Some employers require me to have a neat appearance. Having acne is NOT a neat appearance. Dad doesn't think that having acne prevents me from having a job. That is why ladies plaster their faces with makeup. They have acne to cover. I stopped wearing makeup, after I began seeing Dr. Knuteson. That has been for over 10 years now. I can't catch a guy either, with this acne. Like Dad reminded me, I'm not interested in guys, in that way. That is a side effect from taking seizure meds for 31 years. How can I drive AND be pimple-free at the same time, while taking Lamictal and primidone? Help!!!!!

If you have been seizure free for that long, why does your doc not decrease your dose of anti-convulstant drugs? I can so agree with the short-term memory loss, muddling up of words and so on. Good luck.

I had all of my meds filled, on 8/1/'08. The pharmacist showed me that I will be taking primidone of a different shape. I am used to getting primidone from different manufacturers. The pharmacist over-looked the Lamictal. When I came home, I found out that I have to take lamotrigine now. I told Dad that my insurance must not pay for the brand name anymore. That has happened to both of us, with other drugs.

I see my neurologist on 8/6/'08. He has to fill out the DMV form, saying that I'm still seizure-free. It has to be filled out again, so that I can keep driving.

Dad told me to ask my neurologist about it, and find out if lamotrigine is just as effective as the brand name. I have been taking Lamictal since 5/10/'95. I have never taken the generic form yet.

Dad doesn't want my meds to be changed or dropped. He wants me to be able to drive, and not have seizures from medicine changes.

Has anyone taken lamotrigine in place of Lamictal before?

Hello gameshowaddict,my wife had a major acne breakout after she increased her Lamictal from 200 to 300. She recently started using the acne treatment by Murad and has also reduced her Lamictal back to 200 and now her acne is clearing up. Try the acne product, you got nothing to loose.

Where where I find Murad? I never heard of it. I am using Clearasil Ultra Acne Scrub right now, and the Clearasil Ultra pads. I used that stuff years ago, at least the scrub. My face was clearing up. I couldn't buy it anymore. Everyone kept buying it out. I tried a different Clearasil wash. It irritated my skin. I saw Dr. Sharata on 8/29/'08. He is my third dermatologist now. Dr. Sharata told me to stop taking Nicomide. It's too weak. Nicomide is a prescription acne multivitamin. He told me not to use the dermatology topicals anymore. They weren't helping. He said that I need to take something oral. That is the best way to get rid of it. I am taking Sulfamethoxazole for acne, twice a day. I take it at 5:00 a.m. and p.m, 1 hour before my 6:00 a.m and p.m. meds. The printout sheet said that it's an antibiotic, mainly for severe infections; like pneumonia and such. It doesn't say anything about taking Sulfa for acne. I looked that drug up on the Internet. Sulfa is not used for acne as much now, due to adverse reactions. Thank you for the info. I also take 300 mg of lamotrigine daily. Lamictal went generic, because the patent ran off. That is what Dr. Edelman told me and Dad, on 8/6/'08. I take 375 mg of primidone daily. I take other meds, for other problems.
