I have just finished taking Levaquin for a 10day treatment for pneumonia. In the last 5 days or so I have noticed stiffness in my achilles tendon (no pain) until I get moving. I have also notice a tremor in my hands and no muscle weakness and shaking in my triceps and quads. Of course I hadn't read the precautions to this drug before noticing these symptoms. I contacted both my pharmacist and physician and neither seemed concerned and told me if I was really worried to go to the emergency room. I am wondering if these symptoms will disappear since I am no longer on the drug, how long it will take, and how long I should worry about tendon damage----is the possibility of rupture forever???

Hello! That's very hard to say and it's also hard to tell you that it may never get better. I am 2.5 years into this and still have pain and stiffness in both achilles tendons, knees, shoulders, elbows, wrists and lower back. I was on 750mg of Levaquin for 6 days. No one can tell me, I have seen numerous drs from orthopedic surgeons, rhuematologists, foot and ankle specialists, have had 3 MRIs, countless X-rays and still no closer to knowing if and when a tendon might rupture or not. I have documented nerve damage in my R achilles tendon. Symptoms can appear months or years after taking this class of drugs. Educate yourself, visit the other online forums, see what others have done to help themselves. You are the one who can help yourself now. Again, I am sorry to tell you this and I am sorry you have joined us. What I do know is it is different for everybody, so don't lose hope. Don't let it get you down. We are in it together and we all pray for each other. Take care and keep your head up!

This is a difficult problem to say the least. My advice is to be careful. Don't let it stop you from doing what you usually do but be careful while you are doing it. My right distal bicep tendon completely ruptured after I was off the med for 9 months. I only took a few days worth but it was the worst few days of my life.... including 2 ER visits. So even after I thought the worst was past, the tendon damage occurred without warning. Just be careful.

I took a five pack in Feb. and had the same pain in my achilles tendons. My Dr. dismissed my concerns so I spent too many months in pain before seeing another dr. I'm in physical therapy and will see the dr this week for the results of an MRI. If your Dr. isn't sympathetic to your concerns find another one. I went to a sports medicine specialist, and he is trying to help me. I'm afraid there isn't a quick fix. Good luck
