My 81 year old mother, who has Diabetes and Blood Pressure (and who is on eleven [11] medications) was given a prescription for 750(!!!) mgs of this drug, by the doctor's physician assistant for a mild upper respiratory infection. Four days later, she ends up in the hospital delirious and confused, with pain in her back and legs. She recognized no one. After a few days, and constant intravenous fluids, she came back to herself. She's always been sharp as a tack, and in pretty good shape for her age. When she was brought to the hospital, they thought she was stroking, and of course, she couldn't tell them that she was just prescribed this medication. All her battery of tests came back negative for stroke. Her useless doctor never even showed up at the hospital. If she had, she could have told them about the prescribed Levaquin. When she was released from the hospital, I called the pharmacist and asked what medication that she was taking could of caused this - and he said without a doubt, the Levaquin. This stuff is absolute poison and should not be on the market. How it got approved, I don't know - maybe kickbacks to them - for sure kickbacks to the doctors who prescribe it and claim side affects are very rear with this medication. If you are every given a prescription for this - ask your doctor for something else.

To momofmeezer and others.

Sad to hear your mother´s story.

I am not surprised.

Something similar happened to a close male friend.

He was in his early seventies.

Like your mother he was put on several medications.

I am sure that he was given many of them for pure side effects and year after year.

Unfortunately, I did not have Internet until much of the damage was already done.

In 2004 he became confused and was re-admitted to the Infection Clinic at the local hospital.

He had been there about two and a half months earlier for foot sores that would not heal.

He had then been prescribed Ciprofloxacin and Heracillin

(I don´t know what Heracillin is called in the U.S. I live in Sweden).

I immediately wrote to the doctor in charge and asked him to look through all medications because I was sure that there were several that my friend did not need.

I had also discovered that at least five of them could cause confusion -even psycosis.

Unfortunately, the doctor did not pay any attention to my request but added another medication - a neuroleptic - Risperdal.

I was disgusted!

One year earlier something similar had happened to my 95-year old father. He was put on Melleril and Aricept together with all his other medications. Criminal.

That`s when my "education" began.

Levaquin (Levofloxacin) and it´s relatives (quenelones) all have similar side effects.

You can google for the different product names but also for the active substances.

You can also google the words: floxed and floxies.

Also read the interesting book by Stephen Fried - Bitter Pills.

His young wife suffered serious side effects - including psyciatric - from this type of antibiotics.

You will find more suggestions about books to read at the above webb-addresses.

I hope this message will not be censored.

All I want is to help other people find a way to unbiased information so they can take well-informed decisions about health issues.

P.S. I have also written about my friend under Zocor and Lipitor.

You're comment about it being "criminal" is so accurate. After the fiasco, when I was able to research the Levaquin, I was absolutely amazed about how many people were experiencing side effects, and that nothing is being done. They've black-boxed it. Big deal. They need to get it off the market, and all other medications like it.

Thanks for information you provided, and the book suggestion (Bitter Pills). I'm going to look for it in our local book store.
