I was prescribed Levaquin for a bout of diverticulitis six weeks ago. About a half hour after taking it each morning, I felt completely unwell--dizziness, fatigue, overall weakness, odd sensations of pressure in my head, chest, and bladder, weird bouts of sudden joint pain. The worst side effect was terrible insomnia. I'd go to sleep OK, but wake up after 3 hours and not be able to get back to sleep, sometimes for the rest of the night. Instead of getting the rest I needed to get better, I was getting more and more exhausted. Now, a month after stopping the medication, my sleep hasn't returned to normal. I'm still awake in the middle of the night for two or more hours. Is this a residual side effect from Levaquin? Has anyone else experienced it? When can I expect my sleep to improve? Is there a way to detoxify from this drug?

I have been prescribed 5 seven day courses, 3 four days courses of Levoquin for sinus infection since November 1, 2007. On November 30 2007 and on July 25 2002 I suffered sponteneaous tendon damage first on the left foot then the right. I have had miserable symptoms of nervousness, insomnia, nightmares, rapid heart beat, high BP, muscle weakness and pain, fatigue. I reported this to my primary in May and she gave me another course of the med and ordered a "Sleep Study".

After last weeks episode of another tendonitis on my right foot, and checking the Internet, I put 2 and 2 together and stopped the drug. I don't know why I did not stop it earlier. I was in a fog and state of numb.

I too would like to know how to detoxify from this drug. I have been taking lots of water and Vit C, Vit A and E . But after 7 days form taking it, I still have symptoms.

Appreciate any feedback.

I don't mean to overly worry you but many of us have been dealing with these same issues for quite some time. In my case, it has been almost 2 years. For many others it has been much longer. Some recover much quicker than others. It seems to be largely an individual process.

I'm not saying I have been without sleep for 2 years solid but I certainly have more bad nights than good. Recently it has been a bout of the bad ones. I also had (or have) the same issues Karen mentioned. In addition, my right distal bicep ruptured spontaneously. It has ben a nightmare.

Hang in there and try to be patient (and careful).

Joe

I've been taking it for about 6 days now, and I have exactly the same thing as you say you've had. I feel really sick about 30 minutes after I take it, like you said. Dizzy, cold sweat, weird pressure, and nausea. And for the last 4 nights I've been getting to sleep around 5 or 6 the next morning. Saturday night I couldn't sleep until almost 9 the next morning. I haven't had any weird joint pain, though. I take dance, and I've been avoiding it because I'm afraid something will mess up in my tendons.

I know this wasn't that helpful at all, but at least you know someone else had the same stuff happen to them :]

I suffered with inability to sleep, also, at the beginning of my levaquin flare up. I finally started being able to sleep after being on pain meds for a few days. The insomnia is part of the 'being floxed' syndrome. Please keep in touch and let me know how you are coming along!
