My son is suffering from psychosis because of prednisone. He had severe poison ivy and was given 10 day course of pills that tapered and a shot. Since then he has been in the psych ward for a week , released given respirdal and lithium. After 3 weeks we tried to wean him from the respidal but the psychosis came right back. ;He is 17 and never had any symptoms of psychosis or mania before. He has every symptom now. BTW his psychosis did not appear until he was finished with the prednisone for several days. Will he ever recover?????

Sorry to hear about your son. The effects of prednisone vary from person to person but they are all bad. I am one week off it and I am feeling very depressed and overwelmed with life. This all started as I tapered to a very low level and got worse after I had stopped taking it. I feel like i have absolutely no control over how I feel and this drug is still very much controling me. When I was on it I did not feel depressed, but experienced many of the side effects discussed here. Even when my face was massively swollen I did not feel as hopeless as I do right now. I hope your son gets better soon. This is a very strong and evil drug, even though it does saves lives.

Hi,

My sister was head nurse at a hospital and now a psychiatrist for children and teenagers. She reads these post because I;m having so many problems with Prednisone. She wrote me about your son. I hope you don't mind but I have included it below. I hope it all turns out and I will pray for your son.

"This poor kid. As you probably know, Risperdal and Lithium are used to treat bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and other psychotic symptoms. I find it hard to believe after all the other testimonials I've read that the Prednisone and the withdrawal from it has not acted like a catalyst to his psychosis. There may have been a predisposition to the illness beforehand and the Prednisone episode set off the psychosis. But there is also the possibility, as you also know, that the entire episode is Prednisone-induced. I sure hope they're in touch with an excellent psychiatrist. They shouldn't be content with an internist or family practice doctor or any other specialist other than a psychiatrist."

Had a very similar experience with my son early this summer. It was a very long summer. He seems to be doing well now, though. Hope your son has recovered.

How is your son doing now? I think my son may be going through the early stages of the exact same thing...
