I am a 46 y/o male whom took lipitor 20mg for about 10 days. It was the first medication taken for me aside from occasional antibiotics. Within a week I began to develop severe nausea, weakness, postural dizziness and worst of all, chest pain at rest! I took my last dose last Saturday 8/9/08. Because of the chest pain, I went to the ER on 8/10/08 and discharged the next day after I ruled out for an MI and a negative exercise stress test. My chest pain recurred on 8/12. This AM awoke with nausea, dizziness and chest pain again. I'm going to have an adenosine stress test this PM. I consulted a pharmacologist yesterday about the metabolism of Lipitor and she told me indeed these side effects are not uncommon and in my case, Lipitor will not be eliminated from my body until probably this Sunday or early next week. Anyone experience what I'm feeling?

Good that you stopped that poison drug. I stopped taking Lipitor 6 months ago and I still have numerous side effects. I am taking natural products to help my side effects and to control cholesterol. Unfortunately, most drs. don't understand of all the side effects and don't listen.

As a retired Healthcare Professional, like you I almost died from a statin overdose (80mg/day), which caused a statin-induced cardiomyopathy (heart weakness/early congestive heart failure). Symptoms mimic yours with chest pain at rest. Please see the following information, documented in numerous medical journals and magazine articles, since 2002 by Dr. Peter H. Langsjoen, MD, FACC, (Board Certified Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Disease) from Tyler, Texas. Please read the complete article in LifeExtension Magazine (February 2008): http://www.lef.org/magazine/mag2008/feb2008_Alleviating-Congestive-Heart-Failure-With-Coenzyme-Q10_01.htm, in which Dr. Langsjoen describes in detail the trouble with statins: “All statin drugs block the biosynthesis of both cholesterol and CoQ10, which explains statins’ common side effects of fatigue, muscle pain and muscle weakness, and a worsening of heart failure. When CoQ10 levels are lowered by statin drug therapy, one of the first changes to occur is a weakening of heart muscle function… In 2004, a study published in the American Journal of Cardiology showed that diastolic dysfunction (heart muscle weakness) occurred in 70% of previously normal patients treated with 20 mg a day of Lipitor® for six months. This heart muscle dysfunction was reversible with supplemental CoQ10. Heart failure that develops after years of statin drug therapy can be termed statin cardiomyopathy and may well be playing a role in the epidemic of congestive heart failure in the United States.

Thank y'all so much! I am a 44 y/o f ( just yesterday) and I could not even enjoy my birthday! I cannot stand for more than 5 minutes. In the past few days I have been getting much worse. I was wondering why? I was diagnosed w/ HBP and Diabetes I have lost ALOT of weight why do my muscles hurt more since I lost all the weight I shouldn't I feel better? It really did not make much sense until I found these posts. I will go to My. Dr. first thing in the morning and will NOT be taking my lipitor again. I have been taking it for 3 months I sure hope I am not completely messed up!

Hello to all of those whom responded to my entry. Well, my stress thallium, like the routine exercise stress test 3 days prior, was completely normal. My nausea has subsided as well as my chest pain. Today had some tiny episodes of chest pain but nothing like I had last week. I started taking multivitamins and coq10 and feel better. I attribute these symptoms to lipitor, which I will never take again. That RN who posted her symptoms go and start to take coq10 immediately!

After approx one month on Lipitor I began to have pounding heartbeats after lying down at night & angina. Dr. ordered halter monitor for 24 hours which showed 9 fib. patterns.
Then after drinking 3 beers and going to sleep woke up VERY S.O.B. & my heartrate so irreg. I thought I was having a heart attack. Have appt. for Echocardiogram next week.
I JUST made the connection today after searching Lipitor side effects.
