I have had mirena since April of 2008. It took me this long but I decided to check out if there were side effects posted from people because I, like others have had almost the exact same symptoms of everyone who has posted here. I have been taking vicodin for the migraines, been depressed, have horrible acne (especially on my back which I have never had before!), very painful intercourse (actually started crying once because it was that bad!) bled for like 4 months and now I bleed like forever when I do get my period, which is still every month, and it is kinda like spotting but enough that I can't have sex! I even went to the hospital one night because the cramping was so bad! They did ultrasounds and everything and told me everything was fine. I, like many others, have been waiting for all these symptoms to go away! I think I will consider getting it removed at this point. And oh yeah, lately I have experienced alot of discharge and it kinda has a weird odor, not a yeast infection- I tested, and no symptoms with peeing so prolly not a bladder thing and def not an std-been with same partner for 6 years! What do I do!

I had a lot of the same issues. Headaches ALL the time -- I became and Advil junkie -- cystic acne that I never had before, periods that would last days and days (not heavy, just seemed like they lasted way too long), I also had a funky odor on and off but no discharge. I had mine for 5 months and then could take it no longer. I'm happy to say that I haven't had to buy any Advil since removal.

Did you have migraines before getting the Mirena? Or was this after?

I have had it in for 1 1/2 years and I was getting terrible migraines about once a month right before my period. I just got it removed 2 days ago because I couldnt stand it.

Thank you!!

I am especially angry at my gyne!! I made 3 office visits for various symptoms, and the migraines were the most excruciating headaches. She just told me to visit a neurologist. She obviously has not read that this thing should be removed if you start experience migraines!!

Here's what the physicial link on the Mirena website says:
Mirena should be used with caution in patients who have:
• coagulopathy or are receiving anticoagulants
• migraine, focal migraine with asymmetrical visual loss or other symptoms
indicating transient cerebral ischemia
• exceptionally severe headache

Removal of the system should also be considered if any of the following conditions
arise for the first time:
• migraine, focal migraine with asymmetrical visual loss or other symptoms
indicating transient cerebral ischemia
• exceptionally severe headache
• jaundice
• marked increase of blood pressure
• severe arterial disease such as stroke or myocardial infarction

I was getting wicked migraines about every 3 weeks for over 8 months even had to visit the ER it was so frickin bad!! I decided on my own to get it removed. I just got mine out 3 weeks ago Aug 2008.

I never had migraines before insertion, and since removal have not had one yet.

I told my doctor 3 different times about this, visited a neurologist to get pain meds two different times. I told both of them I had a Mirena, but they never bothered to investigate or even think about Mirena.

My Gyne suggested this thing for my heavy periods - she should know what she is doing!! I will not be going to her again.
