I have been reading all of these posts and have another question....

I have been reading all of these posts and have another question. I hope that someone can help. My daughter, 8 years old, has been on Singulair since she was 4. She is normally a very happy girl with a wonderful disposition. For the last year or so, she has been having trouble getting herself to sleep at night. She says that she hears things in her head such as ringing or "noises". A few hours before she knows it's bedtime, she cries and when we ask her why she's crying, she can't give us a reason. We initially thought that she was crying for no reason because she didn't want to go to sleep. I remember reading about the side effects of Singulair causing mood swings, etc., but her's are not violent mood swings. Just very emotional and has a hard time coming down from the "episode". I'm at a loss...I have not talked to her doctor yet about it, but have told her that we will make an appointment this week to discuss it with him. My husband suggested that maybe it sounded like she was having a panic attack or anxiety attack. I hate to label her as that at such a young age. My mind now goes back to the side effects of Singulair and maybe this is to blame. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! Concerned Mom

Yes this is what can happen,my sons did not happen immediatly that i could put my finger on ,but one of his biggest issues was falling asleep,his mind could not rest,leaving him exsausted the next day,he was never violent but very emotional,crying for no reason not being able to control when or where,then came the panic and anxiety.It does get better off singulair 4 months off now our nightmare is gone.Good good luck to you

Our son exhibited the same type of emotional reaction....he would cry in the middle of the night and didn't know why....he wasn't even coherent. Since taking him off Singulair this hasn't happened once. I believe Singulair can cause sleeplessness which in turn exhausts the child and leaves them in a very bad emotional and psychological place. Lack of sleep is torture.

Definitely sounds like a Singulair 'side effect'. My daughter was on it from age 4 to 7-plus. We didn't notice a significant change at first - it creeps up on you. The last year on it she got very moody, emotional, anxious and fearful. She had sleep disturbance and nightmares!! Take your daughter off it!

Danap, my son is now 16 and had some of the very same symptoms (among others that were worse). He is autistic to boot. He began to have massive anxiety issues at bedtime, complained of nightmares and hearing "noises". The nights have been long in this house and now after being off the Singulair for 5 months, he still will not sleep in his room. He nows associates it with "hearing things". He came to once and questioned whether or not he was 'going crazy' because of the noises. He went months without hardly sleeping at all. Make that appt with your daughter's dr TODAY. And don't be surprised if he tells you that it is NOT the Singulair. Drs are now in a possible 'malpractice' issue if they are partically to blame for NOT taking these kids off the Singulair. By the way, Zyrtec is the same medication made by Johnson & Johnson, so dont allow them to put her on that either.

Weird reading the issue of crying at night. My son exhibited a LOT of horrific side effects and did not even consider his "crying at night for no reason" being one of them. I cant tell you how many times he has woke me at 4am crying, and he has no idea why. Honestly, never thought of the Singulair CAUSING that also. After his trying to catch himself on fire, I guess the crying at night took the back burner in my mind. The more I learn about this drug, the more frightened that I become for all the children still on it.

I am 43 years old and have suffered mild asthma since my twenties, usually triggered by allergies or excercise. I worked as a chemist in the pharmaceutical industry for 16 years and in my final year working, worked on a competitor to Singular. We were seeing anxiety in the animal models that we were doing early testing on. Merck, the maker of Singular, also saw these results in their clinical trials. This year my Dr. suggested I try Singular to get me through the spring allergy season and back off a bit on my inhaler. After two months, I was having anxiety attacks and thought it was asthma as I couldn't breath. One afternoon, I was home alone with my children and started to have an attack so bad I called 911 thinking I was going to pass out. I have never had anxiety in my life and had no idea what was going on with my body until the ambulance arrived and said I was having an anxiety attack. The Dr. took me off Singular and three weeks later I'm back to normal. I've also started to experience weight loss and other things that may or may not have to do with Singular, but I do know it threw my body chemistry into a spin and don't know whether my health issues are a side effect or not. The anxiety was a direct side effect of the Singular. How Merck ever got Singular on the market I will never know. Pharmaceutical companies have consumer complaint lines to take side effect information. I'd report your daughters condition to Merck and also get her into the doctor ASAP. I'm managing my asthma with diet and getting my allergens reduced. Go to an asthma specialist if you can find one....they'll have options beyond the drugs. I see Singular going the way of Vioxx (yet another Merck drug that should have NEVER been approved). Unfortunately, until there is a mortality rate associated with the drug, (in other words, until people start dying) the FDA may not act quick enough. All the people posting need to get these side effects documented and in to Merck and the FDA. Don't depend on your Dr's to report your side effects to the appropriate organizations....they will not do it.

Here is the info you need to report the side effects you're seeing from Singulair. Hope this helps.

The FDA urges both healthcare professionals and patients to report side effects from the use of Singulair, Accolate, Zyflo, and Zyflo CR to the FDA's MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program

on-line at ;
by returning the postage-paid FDA form 3500 to 5600 Fishers Lane, Rockville, MD 20852-9787;
faxing the form to 1-800-FDA-0178; or
by phone at 1-800-332-1088

I told the doctor today that I think this med has changed my sons behavior for the worse and ran down his other side effects. He replied that yes nausea, stomach pain, headaches, & sleepiness are common. But that mood altering- anger is not likely but possible. How else could his teachers explain a drastic change in the polite little boy they have grown to love in the last year, turning in to an overnight nightmare that it took them 2 hrs of name calling, hitting, spitting, and throwing things to calm.

Take your child off of singular. My son was on it for 3 years. One day my child loved school the next it was a 360 degree turnaround from that day on he would cry and have panic and anxiety attacks before going to school and during class. My son was never like that. I would have to wait for him to go up to class before leaving the school - but he would still cry and freak out. Since learning about the 15 year old boy who committed suicide, I took my child off. Everyone notices the difference. My child would not leave my side before and now he is off running in the opposite direction and having a ball.

My 6 y/o daughter went through the same thing. She also began to have severe leg cramps, numbness and tingling in her hands and feet and began to develop food allergies to all foods. This started and increased gradually over a 2 year period. We took her off the Singular approximately 4 weeks ago after taking her to countless doctors and specialists and having multiple blood tests to rule out autoimmune diseases etc. because a neighbor of mine that works for a pharmaceutical company told me that a "black box" warning for Singular had just come over her computer. She went through about a 10 day period where her symptoms got worse and then all of the sudden they were gone completely. Not one doctor or specialist that we went to ever looked at the Singular as a cause. They told us to ignore all the wierd pains she was getting and thought she might be making it all up or exagerating.

Good luck on trying to get a doctor to listen to you. I couldn't and I'm a medical professional.

I'm 17 and I've been taking Singular for about 2 years or so. Recently they did a study and found that the rate of teenagers committing suicide and taking Singular was high, and that Singular causes depression in most teenagers who take it; so it's not surprising that it would cause mood swings in younger children, the best thing to do is talk to your doctor and get a second opinion if needed.
