I would not draw the conclusion that none of us did any research. I did PLENTY! So you know, my "baby" is almost 13 so the recent changes in my body after Mirena insertion did not occur as the result of a recent pregnancy. Headaches, dizziness, bloating, cystic acne, insomnia, low libido, vision changes, anxiety attacks, heart palpitations....NONE of these occured pre-Mirena and now that I've had it out for 6 months, all of these side effects are gone....so what am I left to conclude? Further, there is NOTHING in the literature that states that this device may launch you in to full menopause prematurely -- as it happened to me -- even though I am not finding research studies on this very thing. Further, all the manufacturer literature tells you that the hormone stays local....also not true! Blood tests confirmed that. No where in the precautions does it tell you that taking an allergy medication that you have taken for years will be severely impacted by the Mirena -- that you may have such headaches from it that you need to stop taking it even though you had no issues with it pre-Mirena. Again, the hormone stays local??? And why does the info documentation say that one of the benefits is that you may completely stop having a period on one page, turn the page and it tells you that if you miss a period, see your Dr right away!! What?? Which is it?? I have been with my Dr for over 20 years. I have complete trust in him. He also knows that I will do my own extensive research. He told me himself that a year ago, he was pretty gung-ho on the Mirena and now not so much because SO many of his patients were having issues with it. I also question why the patient info provided in Canada is different than what we get in the U.S. Are American uteruses different then Canadian ones?? I want the manufacturer of ANY drug to tell me the FACTS and then let me decide.
I agree, you shouldn't try to take this out on your own....what if all of it doesn't come out as expected? But if you go to your Dr and want it removed, that should be that, they should not be refusing you!!
I meant to say that I AM finding research studies about women being launched into premature menopause after use of Mirena. Sorry about that!
You are right on the money red1964! I'm 36 and my baby is 10 years old! I NEVER had these types of health problems before the mirena. I'm sure that some peoples bodies are more sensitive to the sythetic hormone in mirena as well..........this came from my gyno. She acknowledged that all of the side-effects I was experiencing could be a reaction to the hormone or a hormonal imbalance from the hormonal change with the introduction of the sythetic hormone into my system.
I don't think it's normal to suddenly have severe headaches, nausea and high blood pressure. It didn't take me long to put 2 and 2 together when the only thing that had changed was having the Mirena. All these symptoms disappeared after removal - the headache and nausea within a few hours, so no-one can tell me that Mirena was not the cause. I'm also not a new mom - my youngest is 13 and I had no health issues prior to Mirena.
If it's working well for you, that's great but it's not working for a lot of other people. I couldn't have predicted the effect it would have on me even after reading all the literature and talking to my doctor. That's why sites like this are so important - to make people aware of what could happen and watch for adverse symptoms.
DEAR tntwcnc2002,
I am sorry but I think you jumped to a conclusion a little too quickly.
We DID our research, we searched the internet, we asked questions.I checked with 3 obgyns and ALL of them had to say the same dialogues.
