I have to comment on some of the Lamictal "new comers". I've taken Lamictal for 1 1/2 years. For the first 6 months, this was the miracle drug. As months went by, I began all of the same symptoms: fogginess, weight gain, short-term memory loss, NO libido, headaches, and nausea, to name a few. As of this moment, I am weaning off of the Lamictal. HARD to do. This is not a drug that can be "stopped" immediately. On my fifth day of weaning off, I am dizzy, tired, weak, irritable, and have vomitted. Only about 3 days left. I am starting Topomax after. I'm anxious to see if there is any difference. Especially the weight gain part. I went from 120 to 135 in one year. (I run and eat healthy meals.) I will continue to take Effexor, which, in 2 years, has had little or no side effects. My advice to anyone just starting to take Lamictal is to GO SLOWLY. My doctor had my doses increase so rapidly that I didn't really see if the lower doses would have worked. (I take 200mg.) The bottom line is to do what feels right for YOUR body, rather than a specified dosage. Best wishes to you fellow BP-ers!

Hello there.
I just though I wanted to reply to your comment. I have sort of done the opposite of you. I was on Topomax previously (for almost 2 years). It started off as a great drug. I say very little side effects at first. However, they started to get worse and worse the longer I was on it. I was very 'foggy', couldn't think of words to put in my sentences, lost the ability to do math in my head and a few other minor ones. Now I am starting on Lamictal. I was started at 50mg twice a day. I ended up having a seizure while at that dose, so mine dosage was upped to 100mg twice a day. I am now noticing hair loss, and possibly acne. And this is after about 4 months. I am concerned about some of the other side effects you list, but I guess I'll see how it goes.

In the 3 1/2 months since my post, I tried the Topomax and had horrible side effects. Then on to Abilify. No better - still irritable, ups and downs, etc. I stopped the Effexor and now don't know where to go. I feel like a lab rat! I was on Welbutrin years ago, so now I'm trying that. The Lamictal worked great for a while, so I'm adding that, also! I feel like my doctor just doses out the "newest" drug. I'm sure the stress of 3 kids and the holidays adds to the mix, but between the anxiety and depression, I'm not sure where to go next. I'm REALLY tired of trying differen meds. Anybody got an answer?
