I have been on Synthroid since 1983--varying dosages. Side effects have included: weight gain, heart palpitations, adrenalin misfires, extreme reaction to heat (sun burns) and body feels hot all the time, fingers go numb in cold weather. Just recently have not been able to regulate dosage--fluctuating between hyper/hypo. I would like to try a new medication with few side effects. Anyone had any luck finding a different med that works?

I have been on Synthroid for 2 years and have gained 30 lbs. The weight gain started soon after taking 75 mgs a day of Synthroid. I took myself off of it for 2 months and started to lose weight, however the Doctors scared me into taking it again telling me if I lose my thyroid it would be diasterous for me. I started taking the 75mgs again and I started to gain weight again. I am a life long exerciser walking 3 miles a day and doing other various work out routines. I am very food choice conscious, and avoid fats and processed foods. I control portions and don't overeat. Despite my telling this to the Doctors, the Doctors all say it is NOT the synthroid, that I must need to diet and exercise.
I am looking into Thyromine, a natural suppliment designed to control hypothriodism. I am going to ask a Homeopathic Dr. about it and see what I can do to get off the Synthroid. I continue to gain weight every month despite my diet and exercise routines. I'll post again if I have news about Thyromine. You can also look it up on the internet.

yes, yes!! Armour works. I switched to Armour, did NOT dose by the TSH, kept raising, and I lost weight and feel SOOO much better. Armour is dessicated thyroid and there are also other prescription brands. But I like Armour a lot. You need to google the website Stop the Thyroid Madness. The lady that created that site explains why you have so many problems and how desiccated thyroid like Armour can change your life. You can't dose by the TSH. You also have to make sure you don't have adrenal fatigue. Read it. I also have the book and it's the best thyroid book on the market.
