I had my thyroid removed 16 months ago. I had nodules and biopsies, but the biopsies couldn't tell if the nodules were cancerous or not---so I had the whole thyroid removed at my doctor's advice. I have been taking Synthroid and increasing the dosage---now up to 200---and I have gained 37 pounds!! I can't stand myself any more, none of my clothes fit,and I am so unhappy. I had gastric bypass surgery 9 years ago and lost 123 lbs. I had gained 20 lbs, but was stable for 7 years. Then I had the tyroidectomy and -boom- I'm fat again. I am really panicked. I don't want to gain all my weight back. It seems like I get fatter every day. My endo doesn't take me seriously, he says my thryoid is at the right level. I don't know what to do!!!!

try taking vitamin B. It may help your body use the thyroid medice.
also some books say throid readings shouldnt solely be used to determine dosage. dt

I had the exact same problem when I was on Synthroid. I kept gaining weight!! ugh. I then found out about Armour, got on it, and raised until I got to where I am today--4 grains. And my weight dropped off. What helped me is the Stop the Thyroid Madness site. You can google it. It teaches you what you need to teach your own doctor about better thyroid treatment. Synthroid is NOT a good treatment. It's only a storage hormone and it leaves you hypothyroid. It did me!!I I also got the book a month ago and LOVE it.

Of course you have gained weight on Synthroid!! It's just T4. That's a storage hormone. Your body is not meant to live on a storage hormone alone. Your thyroid when healthy produces NOT just T4, but also direct T3, T2 T1 and calcitonin. That is exactly what desiccated thyroid gives you. Armour is one of the brand names. It has changed my life. You really need to google Stop the Thyroid Madness and read that great website. It explains it all. The book is even better. My life is totally different now.
