TWO PIECES OF ADVICE: DO NOT DRINK alcohol within 6 hrs and EAT right before taking Toprol. This should help with all mentioned side effects! I have noticed that if I drink ANY alcohol within six hours of taking Toprol (before or after), my HR skyrockets to 190+BPM. I thought this might help others. Also, I MUST eat at least 2 slices of bread each time I take it. Otherwise, I will feel very dizzy, faint and have bad dreams. If I eat, I have no side effects. Also, there have been a couple times where I missed a dose or took it late and each time, I feel my heart starting to race and the PVC's coming back. I have been on 25 mg of Toprol for 6months due to PVC's and rapid/ racing HR (160+)/ palps and BP spikes. My 24hr Holter (six months ago) showed 370 PVC's in one day, so I was put on Toprol. All other heart tests were normal. Anyway, it has worked wonders for me. I had another Holter done last week and there were NO PVC's and steady HR and BP. Since being on Toprol HR is 65, BP is 105/60 or so.

Thank you for the advice. I have been taking Toprol XL
for three years now. Lately I have been getting dizzy, faint,
and with nausea. I am going to take your advise, to eat something before I take the medecine. I used to do it all
the time until I started working at seven in the morning.
I get up at five thirty in the morning, then I have a cup of
coffee and I go to work. Around nine in the morning I take the pill and I start getting dizzy and with nausea.
From now on I am going to eat breakfast and then take the pill right away. I hope this works, otherwise I will go see the doctor. I take toprol for high blood pressure.
I have to say that my pressure is under control it is almost
perfect. I just don't like the side effects. Thank you for the advise.

Personally I have been taking Toprol XL (25mg) for the past two years and drink alcohol on a regular basis. By that I mean 2-3 beers/night during the week and 20-30 beers approximately every other weekend. When I began taking the medication I kept a close monitor on my BP and HR while drinking to make sure nothing crazy was going on. In my experience, I have not had any side effects from mixing the two. If anything drinking alchohol seems to lower my blood pressure. I will add that I take the medicine in the morning but at no set time, ie. usually b/w 7:00am & 11:00am.
