I am a type 1 diabetic and was put on the Lisinopril over a year and a half ago, maybe 2 years. I have my hair coming out when I shampoo and the red patchy skin on my lower legs which is dry making it embarrassing to wear shorts or capris. It makes me feel ashamed. I have laid off both the Lisinopril and HCTZ for a few days now. I got blurry vision, and I think it has made me gain weight. I get the swelling of the angles by this or both meds. Before taking these, I didn't have the swelling. I liked reading through the replys here on this medicine or both. I tried to identify some replies with myself and what I am experiencing. I want to get off this crap and take something else if at all "Alternative" at best. I did take atenylol (sp)? before. If anyone wants to contact me, they can e-mail me at ****** because, I would like to see what others are doing differently now to take care of the situation I am going through.

as a diabetic you need to take an ace or arb. multiple studies show that these types of blood pressure medications are protective of your renal function. if you can not tolerate lisinopril then any of the arbs (a similar type of medication w/o the side effects) would be a good choice. the edema of the lower legs are not related to the medication. it could be from several other things such as decreased renal function, veins in your legs do not carry your blood back to your heart as they should, lack of exercise, standing on your feet for hours or dangling your feet for hours. there are a lot of causes for leg swelling. the hctz should actually help w/this a little. what meds are you on for dm? several medications will cause you to gain wt. you said that you were type I, how did your medical provider come to that conclusion? it is rare for adults to be dx w/type I, they may be insulin depend. but that doesn't mean that they are type I in most cases. if your a1c is above 8 or 9 your pancreas becomes glucose toxic, this means that the beta cells shut down insulin production. usually if you can reduce you a1c by 2-3 % w/insulin then you can switch to oral meds. if you are not a true type I, then byetta might be a bood choice for you. this is an inj. that helps lower a1c as well as helps you to loose weight. there are a lot of factors in tx dm. the blurry vision could be from hyperglycemia, hypoglycemia, or elevated blood pressure. depends on your readings there are too many great studies that show the benifit of aces and arbs (lisinopril is an ace by the way) in diabetic patients. either way you should be getting regular blood work, meet w/a diet spec., have your eyes checked regular, and have a good foot care plan. hope this answers some questions.

My friend was on Lisinopril and her feet swelled pretty quickly. Not sure what she is taking now. You are smart to get off of it. Unfortunately, I had most of the other horrible symptoms that people get!

Listen to your body and do your research. If something doesnt feel right, it probaly isnt. I was also told that Lisinopril "protects" the kidneys for millions of people. That meant nothing to me when Lisinopril failed my kidneys. So these things can happen.
