My daughter began taking Singulair in 2003 for asthma and allergies. I slowly watched her deteriorate from a lively, intelligent, and outgoing young woman to a depressed, withdrawn and self-mutilating person who said that she hated herself and everybody else in the world. She was an athlete, a straight A student who had received an academic scholarship to college, she was fluent in German and had been teaching herself Japanese, and she was a staunch supporter for equal rights for children with disabilities and gay and Lesbian teens. On February 3rd, 2007 my daughter hung herself after working at the local community center. I no longer recognized who she had become. I have a degree in psychology, my father is a retired police officer, and my mother is a retired R.N. We were all trained to recognize the symptoms of depression and suicidal thinking, but we were never able to connect it to the medication that she was taking. We must all ban together to prevent other people from suffering the way that our loved ones have! Educate everyone that you know about what Singulair can do to you. They are still prescribing this drug to people without any notification of what the side effects are.

I am so sorry to hear about your loss. As a Mom, I can not imagine the pain you must be going through...still. Thank you for sharing your story, as I'm sure it is still very difficult to talk about.

I'm not a sue happy type person but ACTION TAKEN should be a class action lawsuit. I know money won't bring Sarah back but this is angering. Maybe if everyone sued them they'd pull the drug off the market. I can't stop thinking about it. I read this email at 8:00 and reread it and read other stories and I am just getting more and more pissed off thinking about it. If that drug had ANYTHING to do with these things then the people that knew it could happen should be held responsible, human life is too precious to take those kind of chances just so the drug companies can make more money.

What about Sarah's doctor, have you talk to him about why he didn't tell you about these horrific side effects?

My thoughts and prayers are with you, and now with other families that have suffered losses from this irresponsible dispersion of a drug that can do this to people.

I want to thank those of you that replied to my daughters (sarahsmom) posting # 34150. The past two years of been so difficult for all of us to understand why such a gifted student and caring person would take her own life without reaching out to us. As Laurie said in her posting, Laurie, my wife, and I, always thought with our employment and educational backgrounds we would be able to detect when a member of our family was in need of assistance. We question ourselves every day why didn't we notice Sarah was hurting. We hurt so much and miss Sarah a lot. Sarah and Laurie lived at home with us while Laurie went to college and got her dual major. Laurie has returned to college to earn a masters degree in Family Counseling.

Please watch over your family and tell them every day how much you love them.

Stay healthy.

Bob Myers Sarahs grandpa
Phyllis Myers Sarahs grandma

Laurie Berlin Sarahs mother

I am terribly saddened by your story. I too, have been through a simular experience. My 45 year old sister, suffered from depression after stopping Singulair. We thought it was something that would pass, providing her with love and support. It wasn't enough. July 12 after she hung up the phone from our weekly converstation, she hung herself. The only consolation we have is the last words she spoke was "I love you."
I agree that someone should be held morally responsible for this. I too take Singulair. I am now exploring my options for an alternative.
I will keep you in my prayers.
