I just came from my doctor's appointment and I had a really interesting conversation with him. He said that he always has a conversation with his patients about the link between Singulair and depression and suicidality before he prescribes the medication. He also said that he would not recommend this medication to people with a history of depression or suicide. I asked him what he thought could be done to improve the disclosure of side effects to the public and physicians. He said that he thought that a big part of the problem is lack of funding on the part of the FDA. They just don't have the funds to do any public awareness. I also asked him what he thought about the coroner reporting medications to the FDA in cases of suicide and he wondered if the HIIPA laws were preventing them from disclosing that information, even to the FDA. He said that unfortunately the HIIPA laws have tied the hands of many medical professionals and has had many unintended repurcussions.
