Go to the Mirena website, click on Physician Information and look at the side effects. I experienced severe Migraine headaches, starting about 5 months after having it in. They kept getting progressively worse until a year later i had one so bad I went to the emergency room. I NEVER had migraines before in my life! Even the Neurologist said it was unusual for a woman of my age - 43 - to suddenly be getting migraines every month.
I didnt think it was because of this thing, then I looked on the physician info and looked up migraines, and it clearly states that it should be removed if women get migraines for the first time, even though MY DOCTOR who SUGGESTED this thing said it doesn't cause migraines. TOTAL BULLCRAP. Someone is lying here. Hence, my feelings on a lawsuit. I told my doctor 3 times I was getting migraines and she said go to a neurologist, but never once said anything about what is in the physician information from Bayer!!!! I finally decided on my own from my own research after having to live with this agony to get it out because it says to consider removal if you experience migraines for the first time (But doctor says it's not the Mirena?!?!) Sounds like my doctor is getting cutbacks to keep this stupid thing in. I will be getting a new doctor after this whole fiasco.
Wow! I think its great that Mirena has worked you and your friends! But, before you critize the women on here for thinking Mirena could be the cause of their problems, you might want to do some research on Mirena. You should check out drugs.com. It lists extensive information on the effects of mirena on women, including every symptom women on here have mentioned and them some. Drug makers know exactly what their products will do to people, but money is the issue and its always more important to them than society. I really wish Mirena had worked for me. I just had mine taken out after experiencing many effects and I am currently keeping a diary to see what changes take place in how I feel as well as physical changes.
Yeah, Instead of removing my Mirena...my Gyno decided to put me through so much blood work. ultra sounds and even referrals to specialists...all to come back free and clear...the only thing that could be causing the problem Mirena...and even he states that NOW but he would not before...that these side effect do and can cause excruciating problems for SOME women.
I applaud those women who can have Mirena and live wonderful content lives, such as yourself...but please do not condemn us because it is not working for us, if the shoe was on the other foot and I was feeling no pain, I would NOT criticize, I would simply express my great success, but I would not suggest that other tests and issues were overlooked and others are blaming poor little Mirena without due cause and research....us women who are having the issues...do not just blindly blame Mirena...after all a great many of us paid cash for our devices only to get them thrown away just months later. We have visited many specialists, and endured a battery of different tests!!!!
Why would I put myself through such Hell? Probably denial, I didn't want to believe it either, but it is fact.
I will be glad to be rid of this device, but truly I am honestly pleased to hear your success and that of your friends. I wish, and I truly mean that, I could say the same thing.
Good luck and peace!!!!
10 women you know and you all with no side effects is statistically improbable -- even according to the makers of Mirena, you would be an unusually lucky bunch. But if so, be glad it has worked for you and by all means share your experience with others. But no need to also suggest that many of us must be wrong and not know our own bodies just because we weren't as fortunate as you and your friends. We all wanted it to work but weren't as lucky as you. To then insult us for our misfortune is like rubbing salt on an open wound.
You need to take a look at Drugs.com/pro, look up Mirena and read the professional monograph....there you will find just about ALL the side effects that we on this board have mentioned, side effects that are NOT in the patient information (which can be found immediately after the professional info on the very same site...you don't even have to search for it again). This info comes right from Bayer and it is AMAZING to me that the rest of the side effects are not listed in the patient info. That should be illegal. Why would they hide some side effects from potential patients???
You should consider yourself extremely lucky if you have had no issues....and hopefully when you have it removed, you won't be plunged immediately and completely into menopause, as I have been.
Having no periods? One page of the patient info says this is a "benefit"....turn a few more pages and you will see where they say to consult your doctor if you skip a period...well, which is it? Is it ok to skip your period or not?? We all wish you well but if you start to have strange symptoms, at least now you are aware. If you didn't have these issues pre-Mirena but you have them after Mirena is installed, the ONLY reason could be the effect of the Mirena.....and this progestin does not stay local, as Bayer claims. My blood test results show otherwise. All we ask, as consumers, is the truth. Bayer should not have one set of side effects for US consumers, one for Canadian consumers and one for doctors....side effects are side effects!!!
Thank you so much for posting this. I am actually going to have my current Copper T taken out and the Mirena put in this afternoon. I decided to switch because of my periods being so long and heavy. Also, a lot of my friends decided to go with the Mirena and they love it. My best friend actually has spotting only one day every three to four months. Thanks again, reading all the other comments threw me for a loop because I haven't heard anyone I know say anything bad about theirs.
msnbf1306, I just have one question. How was your experience when you first put it in? I had it put in on 9/23/08, and had bad cramping and bleeding. My period showed up on 9/26, though, so I think it's related. My periods typically only last 5 days, but I'm still bleeding and cramping today, 10/4. I want to give Mirena a fair shot, and I realize my body must get used to it, but I'm wondering if this is typical.
i am having a mirena put in tomorrow, i am 22 and have had two kids, and am not looking to have anymore anytime soon. i have done a lot of research and looked at tons of post, good and bad about mirena, and it seems to me, that it has alot to do with age. alot of the women who are experiancing all these serious side effects seem to be in there 40's. from what i can tell most younger people do fine and end up with shorter periods, after looking at everything, i have decided to still have it put in. it seems to me alot of you are blaming mirena, ( not that it isn't) but i think it has alot more to do w/ your bodies aging than the device it self.
