I was prescribed the 4mg methylprednisolone pack along with 50 mg...

I was prescribed the 4mg methylprednisolone pack along with 50 mg tramadol for acute tendinitis in my wrist. I took the first 3 days of the prednisone and only 2 doses of the tramadol over the three days. For a total of 60 mg of prednisone. The first day I had hot flashes and insomnia but attributed it to the tramadol because I had never taken it before and had taken the prednisone several years ago for poison ivy with no adverse reactions. I didn't take the tramadol the second night and then took it again last night along with my daily dose of prednisone. I had extreme difficulty falling asleep, heart burn, hot flashes; and tossed and turned all night trying to fall asleep. At around 2am, I began to have difficulty breathing, tightening in my chest, confusion, and racing thoughts. It felt as though my throat was closing up on me. My anxiety progressed to the point that I was pacing back and forth. I woke my husband up and told him to prepare to take me to the ER. After calling my insurance's 24 hour help line, it was recommended that I go to the ER. I had an x-ray, blood work, urine drug screen, and echocardiogram. Luckily, everything was negative. The ER doctor told me that I likely had a reaction to the prednisone and commented that some people will experience these symptoms when taking it. He stated that he had a similar reaction when he took it and it felt like he was climbing the walls, which is an accurate description of my experience that night. He recommended that I either stop taking it altogether or call my primary care provider and cut it down. He prescribed me xanax and administered some to me at the ER which greatly helped. The next day I stopped taking the pred but am still having dizziness, chest tightness, hot flashes, and mental dullness. I have decided to never take this medication again. Fortunately, I don't have any of the physical sx that some have experienced, and my heart goes out to you. I think the mental symptoms were traumatic enough for me and can't imagine having both as I would be a basket case. I have mood swings, some melancholia, and am very fatigued. I think it is imperative to research any medication that is prescribed to you before you take it. Many providers will say that side effects are rare, but my experience is that side effects are more common than rare. My prayers go out to those of you who are going through what I am going through. I hope that it clears our systems quickly because this is no way to live. I'd rather put up with the pain of tendinitis or carpel tunnel than to have these symptoms.

I agree TOTALLY with you. I also have the misfortune of having a ruptured tendon in my elbow due to this medication...I am like you I would rather have the elbow pain I had before than what I have now. I had the 21 pill dose on the third day the tendon popped and I was just resting it on a counter. I would never take this medication again.

You're not alone. I've been prescribed a two-week prescription to Prednisone for a bad case of poison ivy (43 yr. old male). I've been on it for less than a week and am experiencing insomnia, anxiety attacks, and weird mood swings. Funny thing is, the poison ivy wasn't half as bad as Prednisone's side effects. It'll have to be a life-threatening situation before I turn to steroids again.

I'm a healthy 34 year old women. No high blood pressure or anything other then a sore throat. I went to the walk in clinic yesterday. The Dr. give me penicillin with potassium and Methylprednisolone 4mg for tonsillitis. I had problems understanding the Dr.'s english and I remember him saying something about my heart would feel like I was jumping out of a plane. Within 30 mins of taking the Methylprednisolone my heart was racing, I have chest pain, I'm having crying spells for no reason. My mind is racing. I feel very hyper on the inside but I can't walk into the other room with out getting out of breath. It hurts to take a deep breath. My hands are shaking I'm sweating. I had a mild case of hives last night. I feel like someone has there hands around my throat. I kept taking the meds until dinner tonight because I thought the Dr. said it was normal but again he was hard to understand and I don't think I should be feeling this way. There was no way to get a hold of the Dr. so I called the pharmacy and they had never heard of chest pains from the Methylprednisolone. But I have found several sites that have warings about allergic reactions with all of my symptoms on-line. So very long story short I'm not taking the last 2 for tonight. There is a 48 hour wait to talk to the Dr. that prescribed me the meds. Unless I pay another $75. to see 1 of there other drs a 45 minute drive from here. I'm gonna hope these feelings go away by tomorrow or I'm gonna have to go to the er. In the morning. So I just wanted people to feel like there not alone. And I will also NEVER try this med. again.

I have been on pred now for one week and feel great! I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis Dec 2008 and have never been in remission. This is the first time I haven't been going to the bathroom every 30min and the pred has reduced inflammation throughout my entire body so my constant neck issue (which caused migraines) is basically none existent! I also suffer from terrible sinus and since being on pred I haven't had sinus problems. The only thing that is bothering me at this point is the insomnia. I have difficulty sleeping at night but it doesn't seem to affect me during the day and I feel quite 'buzzed' from the drug. It's not a 'crawling' sensation as some of you have described so I am lucky I suppose.

Hopefully my colitis will go into remission soon as I have been prescribed to take pred for one month. I think it really depends on the person taking the drug, some might have horrible side effects and other not so bad like me. It is always worth giving it a try I say! Nothing beats bleeding and having to go to the toilet every 30min...
