I am a loving mother of a 5 1/2 year old boy. He has been on Singulair for over 3 years. In this past 3 years my son has suffered in an unspeakable amount. He came down with Rota Virus and was hospitalized at 2. He then came in contact with Pneumonia in the hospital while he was there. They automatically put him on Singulair, Zyrtec, Prednisone, and antibiotics to treat the pneumonia. Since that day, my son has gone though more tests than I have in my entire life. He has had asthma, sinusitis, leg cramping ( to the point he cannot walk for 2 years), IBS, Acid reflux,(they gave him laxatives for a year that made things worse and addicted to them also), stomach pain, constipation and diarrhea back and forth. He also got Erythema Mulitforme TWICE, while on this drug. All of which the doctors said could NOT be caused by Singulair. He has had several Upper GI's and CT scans. Along with Barium enemas, several hundreds of blood tests, and many many pokes and prodded that were not necessary. All since he has been on Singulair. He now has frequent bathroom trips, depression, confusion, and anger outbursts. He also has to go to the restroom every 5 minutes. He has had genital swelling, and many other aches and pains. None of which his "doctor" ever said could be a result of Singulair. I am 100% sure it was!!!! He currently has anxiety and emotional sporadic issues causing problems in school The teachers and counselors say that it is so strange because there is no TRIGGER and the outbursts are completely inconsistent. His preschool teacher and director are sure he has ADHD. Well, we had him tested and he does not have any part of it. He has no learning disability what-so-ever. So that brought me back to square one. He is in a positive loving enviroment. How could he be depressed and want to hurt everyone around him? He cannot sit still. He cries and says he is 'stupid" and "can't think" like the other boys. He has nightmares and cannot sleep alone. He is scared of everyone and everything. So, as I sit here crying, I realized that this has all been a reaction of his "medicine" Singulair. He never should have gone through all of those painful tests, only to prove they couldn't find anything. So many treatments and sound full advice speeches from his doctors. How could they be so naive and selfish in the life of my son? When I called my pediatrician of 5 years, she told me that " parents that have children with behavioral problems will LOOK for something to blame their problems on." She also said "drug companies only put side effects on their labels to PROTECT the drug companies. (as she laughed at me) They are not always valid". Then she said "if you take you child off of Singulair you will be playing Russian Roulette in his life." Then she said that all children around 5 or 6 go though this emotional time in their lives." She told me that if I take my child off of Singulair that she would no longer be a part of his health regimen for his asthma. She told me to see a Pulmonologist for further treatment. Who is paying who? This is my son's life???????? I decided to go with my mother-gut instinct and get him off of this medicine. No matter what. He has been a different person since. He is currently going though a lot of side effects and withdrawals (leg pain, insomnia, hic-ups, emotional distress) but every day is getting better. How can the drug companies say that this is a "wonder drug?" There are more reported side effected patients then clinical studied patients! How can a "medication" that stimulates the brain not be connected to other problems? This "medication" interferes with the bio synthesis and action of LTs and has been marketed as NOVEL medication against asthma and allergic rhinitis. Who the hell is playing God here??? The pocket books of Merck or our over PAID "doctors?" Who pays the price? Our children? Or us. Thank god I found this before it was too late. I would not be able to withstand the pain of losing my son due to their lack of scientific evidence. They are lucky I am one of the smart ones. I will not settle for less than Justice for the drug companies and their paid "doctors?" You all end up in the same place. HELL There are 18 million people on this drug. Most of them are children. Please save a life if not your own child's life. Thank You

Your son is blessed to have a mother like you and not so blessed to have had ignorant doctors. Congratulations for making the connection and trusting your instinct to free himfrom the ravages of this drug.

Please visit www.parentsforsafety.org, the website of the advocacy group Parents United for Pharmaceutical Safety and Accountability. Make your voice heard by signing our petition to the FDA and find out how you can help other children avoid the trauma suffered by your son.

I wish him a future filled with happiness and good health!

I am a Mother of 3, all of my children suffer with allergies and asthma. 2 of them have been on Singulair for some time. My oldest has been on it for over 5 years. And never once has he had any of these side effects. Singulair has been 1 of many medicines he has been treated with. 6 meds in all. He can play sports and act just like a normal 12 year old. He can run bases around a baseball field like a pro when he's stealing the bases. but never has he had any signs of ADD or ADHD, never a thought of killing himself. Or anything that you people have mention above..He does very well in school and has since he started this medicine. My daughter is in the top of her class. Very smart and pays attention and respects to her teachers and classmates. Again no signs of anything. I feel you people are being totally crazy and trying to blame some one else for problems that where already there with your children. Why not blame the drug company right? See what you can get from them? Class action? There you go....Wake up people and smell the coffee, your children may have had these signs before and you hadn't noticed them, or ignored them until all of this. Come on be real......M..B..

Oh my gosh. Although I have absolutely no experience with this drug, I applaud your courage, and appreciate immensely your posting. As the mother of four children, I can honestly say, should I ever be confronted with a situation like yours, I pray to God that I have enough "gut" mother reaction to be my child's advocate. You know, I think the doctors and drug companies just look the other way when it comes to side effects, especially when the majority of patients on any given drug are responding well. It kind of wrecks their plan, and let's face it, there are huge bucks in the pharmaceutical industry. Physicians are actually rewarded for writing a certain quota of prescriptions.

Oh, and as a side note, I would NEVER return to a doctor who LAUGHED at me! That's the worst. When you are seeking professional advice, and you are vulnerable and wanting to do the right thing, the LAST thing you need is to be mocked.

One last thing I will say, relative to trusting your instincts. I have been taking Benadryl for years to help me sleep. It's worked well, with no side effects. But I don't want to be on a drug for the rest of my life, so recently several people suggested melatonin. It's natural, it's just a hormone, it has ABSOLUTELY no side effects. That is what everyone said. OK, I have the worst, hallucinagenic dreams, anxiety, no good sleep, and heart palpitations on this. I do not have these symptoms when I don't take it. I have tried it several times, just to make sure there's no coincidence. EVERYONE continues to say they have never heard of that and it's not the melatonin. I know my body. I no longer take it. Just another example of how you HAVE TO look out for yourself. Best of luck with your son; I hope he continues to improve.

TO MAMABEES:

I BELIEVE THAT THIS DRUG AFFECTS EVERY PERSON DIFFERENTLY. MY SON NEVER HAD ONE HEALTH OR BEHAVIOR PROBLEM UNTIL HE STARTED TAKING SINGULAIR. COINCIDENCE? MAYBE, BUT MY SON'S LIFE MEANS MORE TO ME THAN TAKING THE CHANCE. I KNOW MY SON. I ALSO BELIEVE IN DOING WHAT IS RIGHT IN YOUR HEART. WHEN YOU SEE YOUR CHILD LYING ON AN EXAM TABLE TIME AND TIME AGAIN, WITH NO MOTIVE AND NO RESULTS, THEN MAYBE YOU WILL CHANGE YOUR MIND.

Good luck to you the road is long you are not alone, you have come to the right place,i agree doctors are ignorant,we went through 3 years of hell, and they could have stopped it at any time. Our doctor told us if you read a side effect you will proberly get it,WHAT,i have 2 years of psych reports and never did i read it till i figured it out. As far as mamabees reply, for some people this drug is the magic bullet we dont deny that, but for others it is pure poison. We dont want it off the market but told of the problems for some so we can make informed choices. As far as sueing anyone, the drug companies just about have diplomatic immunity, and are not held responsible

Hey, Daisydookes,
I have seen my son on an exam table several times before we knew what was wrong with him, starting when he was an infant with RSV. That was the 1st time he was put on steroids, as he grew, and the seasons changed, the symptoms become more frequent and different. He would play in the leaves and we would end up in the ER for hours. He was then put on more steroids. It wasn't until he was 4 yrs old(his 1st surgery) that they found out he had deadly allergies to indoor and outdoor mold. As well as several other allergies. He has spent years being on Doctors tables and having surgeries to remove his tonsils and adnoidsand others, blood tests that they took a small razor blade and put a little slice in his arm. That was very different. But they needed to do what ever it was to find out why he would break out with hives on top of hives and have severe asthma attacks. My Mother child instinct was to take him and never come back to any one. But what good would that do for him. He would continue to suffer. They finally started him on Zyrtec. Albuteral and more steroids. That only worked for a little while. At 6 yrs old, he then had to go through more testing. Cystic Fibrosis, you name it, they did it. So as for me, my heart bleeds for any one who has to go through what we have. But in the long run. When they put him on Singulair and the 5 other meds. (Actually at that time it was more.)The treatment worked and he showed none of these side effects. Now at age 12. He just went through another round of testing just last week. I would love to take him off all the meds. But..... unless there is a way to get rid of all the mold in the world, then I would have a chance of losing my child. So to me singulair is a wonder drug. I am truely sorry to all of you , if you have to go through all this. But when I read your comments yesterday, it angered me to think that every one blamed the pill. Continue with the testing until you find out what is wrong with your children. If you really believe it is the Singulair, then take them off of it. But we as parents have to take the right steps to find out what is going on with our children. I did it as much as it tore me apart. But I now know and can handle all 3 of my childrens asthma attacks and don't need to run to the ER any more. I am not an evil person. I went through it and every parent can, you just have to for the sake of your children.

TO MAMABEES; I AM CONFUSED. IF YOUR CHILDREN ARE PERFECT, AND YOU HAVE NO SIDE EFFECTS OF SINGULAIR, THEN WHY ARE YOU HERE???? WHY GO TO A SECTION OF A WEBSITE REGARDING SIDE EFFECTS? JUST TO ARGUE WITH PEOPLE?? YOU WOULD THINK IT WOULD BE A WASTE OF TIME.

Mamabees,

As a mother of 3, it saddens me that another mother has absolutely no compassion for those of us who went through this. It sounds like you had a nightmare yourself and I feel for you as I'm sure others do. And it's wonderful that Singulair has worked for your children with no side effects. Testing? Yes we went through every test under the sun to figure out what was wrong with our 5 year old. It was awful. We as parents are just throwing our hands up in the air and saying "Singulair" did it. It took agonizing and painstaking months, and years in some cases for people to figure out it was Singulair. Our children went through what your children went through as far as physical health was concerned, but then throw in suicidal thoughts and behavioral problems (all that weren't there before the pill, and in a 5 year old) and try to figure that one out. Within a week our son was pretty much back to his happy and healthy 5 year old self.

If you are going to come into this safe haven for parents and bash us, I would suggest doing a little more research to find out just exactly how many other thousands if not millions of children are experiencing these same side effects.

As Lynn (flindy) stated, we're not asking for it to be taken off the market, only that physicians, pharmacists, and patients be educated on the "possible" side effects so that if there are odd behavioral changes they'll know what to do.

Have a heart.

I came to this web site after I saw reports on my local news station. I always check things out to see what other people are saying. I hope your children get what they need. Honestly. No I didn't come here to argue with people. I just wanted to state that it does help some kids out as well. Not all have the same reactions, yes it may be given to out quickly. or given to children and adults who really don't need it. The Doctors do need to do their home work. I agree there. It took a long time before they gave it to my children. It wasn't in the first round of medicines. And NO MY CHILDREN ARE NOT PERFECT,, they have thier issues.. they are kids... I again honestly hope you people find the right treatments to get your kids help. I wish your children well....

Hello, I,m Trevor's Grandma. I posted on this website around the first of August after he had been off the medication 2 wks. He is still a totally different little boy and I like you am so thankful for this website. Last Wed.a Springfield, MO( local TV station) interviewed my daughter. On Saturday they started an adv. running all the way thru today, telling the public that a popular drug is affecting many families. Tonight on the 10:00 news they will blow the whistle on Singulair. You wouldn't believe how many people have seen this pre-show adv. and called us. I think locally there is going to be a lot of crap raised with the health industry. Hang in there!!! Susan 53

To Mammabees, You need to get off this post and find somewhere to argue!! CHildren's little bodies DO NOT need to be on drugs. They need vitamins to help restore their damaged immune systems and then become stronger to fight off allergies & infection!! I was on anitbiotics, allergy shots and a gazillion other drugs as a child and have suffered immensely with so many side effects as an adult. I have now gottne my immune system strong buy going to a health store and talking with the lady behind the counter regarding alternatives for allergy & asthma meds. I take Omegas for Inflammation and tons of Vitamins. My daughter sufffered from allergies and asthma and after getting rid of all chemicals(& chemical cleaners) and putting her on mega vitamins, she has less asthma. Once in 3 months instead of every week. Drugs stink!! There ARE alternatives. DOn't believe the DRS. or the FDA!! Good luck to you all.
