Despite having a brush with the big C last year (I finished chemotherapy in January) I have been very fit and healthy during my 61 years! A few weeks ago I started having palpitations, hence a visit to the doctor revealed high blood pressure and cholesterol reading of 9.9!!! Shock, horror. He informed me that it was genetic and prescribed Simvastatin 400mg and Bendroflumethiazide 2.5 mg daily. Not being satisfied with the enclosed leaflets I have looked up more info. on the net. Should I have done this!!! After reading some of the posting on the site I am feeling a bit apprehensive. Last night I had a terrible night couldn't sleep for the pains in my legs and a bit nausea this morning. But I need to be sensible, I really don't have any choice but to take these drugs just hoping that I won't have to stay on them for the rest of my life and I don't get any of the side effects that some of you have suffered. I also wonder if the chemotherapy could have caused by raised cholesterol? Hope to keep you posted and would welcome any comments!

Don't have a choice? Research my friend. This is the absolute pits that at our stage in life we have doubts in doctors I can't believe it. When I say research I now firmly believe that high cholestrol is no more of a killer than morphine is the killer in a terminally ill cancer patient if you get my drift. I don't know BUT I would not be in the least surprised if you have raised cholestrol levels to help your body fight what you have been through. A raised body temprature is natures way of fighting infection. I am no longer scared of raised cholestrol at all and I firmly believe raised cholestrol in ageing people protects them and aids their longevity. Statins absolutely crippled me physically and mentally. Go to spacedoc dot net and start your journey of study and when you get to COQ10 take the kaneka brand 400% more bioavailable and this is all from a nincompoop that prior never had any interest in medicine whatsoever but had to learn to survive. Lets know how you get on sometime. Best to you. Kiwi.

Hi I was on 10mg from Jan. to May this year. Came off with GP approval and told to try and help by diet. My diet was good anyway and in August my cholesterol was back to 7.9 and this time GP put me on 40mg a day. I too take lanzaprazole in mornings. After one week had to stop as my legs feet and hips were wracked with pain. GP took blood tests - (all normal) to see what was causing my terrible nausea and indigestion pains and a few bowel problems. Trouble is I have not been on simvastatin for over a month now but I still have all the joint pain and although nausea is not so bad it is still there?? GP says nothing to do with Simvastatin. She is on holiday for three weeks but she will probably put me back on to the 40mg dose. Incidentally please read the GREAT CHOLESTEROL CON by Malcolm Kendrick. It is very interesting and thought provoking and may help to make up your mind

Forgot to mention I too take Bendroflumethiazide and Lansoprazole first thing each day but have been on them for a few years now with no side effects from these. Problem I have found is my symptoms have not disappeared even tho I have stopped taking Simvastatin a month or so ago. Regards Anne H

it sounds like you either had the wrong lab results or got your cholesterol & calcium numbers mixed up; statin dose 400mg--I don't think so hopefully these were typo's. resend your question with corrected lipid results & statin dose so we can discuss.
