Ive been on the nuvaring for about four months and for three of those months everything was fine. my doctor told me that i could leave it in for 3 weeks and have a period for a week or three weeks and change to a new ring. well being that most women hate periods, i decided not to have one four four months. But now i am having this weird brown discharge(no smell) and i have had reoccurring yeast infections (white discharge, itching, burning). this skin around my vagina was raw for a week or so. gross i know. can anybody tell me whats up with this. i have been overly emotional because i thought something was wrong with me. is it?

I am not a doctor, but from personal experiance and becaus emy job revolves around the female body I have some information and advice for you. The brown discharge you are finding is your uterus leaking the dead tissue layers that have detached from its walls. Because you have avoided your period for four months, I am willing to bet that your uterus is trying to get rid of the old tissue and is unable due to the hormones, so it's leaking or letting the excess tissue get caught in with your normal discharge. A females uterus has layers of blood-filled tissue that coat its walls in order to support and help grow a baby when the woman becomes pregnant. When this egg does not attatch to the wall, the uterus shed's the tissue in order to get rid of the old, dying cells and have a fresh coat for the possible new fertalized egg next month (much like our skin shedding once or twice a year to remove the dead/old skin cells). I am also willing to bed that because there is so much dead tissue in your uterus, that it is helping the bacteria we have in our vagina grow - causing the yeast infections. I would highly recommend getting OFF Nuvaring. This birthcontrol was not made to provide continual protection against pregnancy, but only on a month to month basis. There are other birthcontrols that can delay your period for up to 3 or 5 months such as Seasonale. I would seek out a GYN and speak to a doctor about Seasonale and how to about letting your uterus drain or heal.
I hope this has helped you!!

I understand what you were going through. I was on the nuvaring for about six months. Everything was fine for the first three months. Then all of a sudden, I started experiencing severe yeast infections with irritation, itching and rawness. My OB/GYN put me on pills and cream for two months. As long as I took the medicine, I was fine. As soon as my treatment was over, the symptoms started up again. Luckily, my mother works for my OB/GYN and she got a call from another patient complaining about the same symptoms. That's when she discovered that it was the Nuvaring. Since then I have discontinued to use the Nuvaring, and for the last three months, I have been yeast infection free! Good luck to you!
