I had Mirena put in about a month ago. I am 44 and I smoke, so the traditional birth control methods are not safe for me. ( I can tell you, the pull out method only works for 13 years.....I now have a 3 year old daughter to go along with my 20 year old son and 16 year old daughter....LOL.) I researched Mirena and decided to give it a try. I have had bleeding since it was inserted but nothing I cannot deal with, I knew this would be a possibility going in. I do get headaches now, but have no idea whether they are caused by allergies or Mirena, since it is allergy season right now. What everyone reading these posts needs to remember is that if you had no side effects, you probably would not have visited this site after the Mirena insertion. So, it really is a one sided site, without the feedback from those who got Mirena, and have gone on carefree with their lives. I only came to this site to see if headaches were a side effect, since I have experienced several this month and that is not common for me. Anyway, I am glad I did not look here before the Mirena because I may have not gotten it .....I plan on being open minded and wait a few months to decide for myself.

You make a good point. This site is about the negative side effects of Mirena. The great thing about the internet is that you can go to google and seek out positive testimonials right after reading these. My experience looking for them has been that I still find many negative ones. I think it's a no news is good news situation where woman who have no problems aren't inclined to look for other woman on line that also have to problems with the device. However, if you read all of the testimonials, some woman like myself enjoyed the device for some time before experiencing intolerable side effects. I think it's important to consider the bias held by those who are happy with the device. They want to be happy with it because it's a very effective form of birth control. I got it because I didn't like the side effects I'd experienced on even a low dose birth control pill; mainly constant irritability. But I have to admit I also got the MIrena because it seemed like something that could give me the illusion that I was on no form of birth control at all, no pills to remember to take, seemingly no side effects, and no period. After the initial pain I almost forgot it was there, except for the occasional stabbing pain or when my partner felt it poke him. What was most important to me was being able to enjoy the pleasure of sex without a condom with my mate. I felt like wonder woman. Now I worry for other woman who will be too diluted by this illusion to realize that there are side effects to most forms of birth control only this is expensive and painful to insert and remove and can have a lasting impact on one's hormone balance.
