My 3 year old son was having trouble with aggressive behavior in his daycare. The head teacher asked if he was on singulair. When he said he was, she said that that might be the cause of his aggressive behavior. My wife went with my son to Chile for a month. The singulair prescription ran out while they were there, but because it had not been a month before the last refill before they left, they could not refill the prescription before leaving for Chile. The singulair ran out after their third day in Chile. So my son went a month without taking singulair. And interestingly, his behavior did not change. He aggression was about the same as before. It is only recently, now that he has been developing more language skills and has also been potty training, that his aggressive behavior is for the most part under control. So in our case, it does not seem that there has been a cause-effect relationship between taking singulair and our child's aggressive behavior. He still takes singulair every day and is doing fine. Also, he never experienced any of the problems sleeping that others reported.

Please continue to keep an eye on things. When my son was 3 he started Singulair and showed no immediate side effects. Yes he was a little aggressive, a little anxious and had trouble getting to sleep - but as these are common issues for 3 year olds we didn't connect it to Singulair. We even took him off for a summer and didn't think we saw a significant change, or if we did, figured he was getting older and better able to control himself. But when he started kindergarten (and increased his dose) he developed a very serious full blown anxiety disorder, became withdrawn and almost mute at school while also showing oppositional behavior. We went to psychiatrists, and had him evaluated, and no one could pinpoint what the problem was. He grew moe depressed and hard to manage and started talking about death. I came across this website in January 2007 after a conversation with my sister about medication side effects. This was the only medication he took. I was shocked to read about children with many of the same symptoms and took him off immediately. Within days his mood became much lighter and he smiled more often than i'd seen him do in months. Since going off we have seen the anxiety slowly fade away and my son has come out of his shell and has been able to function like a normal child. I hope you don't lose 2 years of your child's life like we did.

Thank you for your message. I certainly don't want to downplay the risks or call into question the horrible experiences others have had with singulair. So far it doesn't seem to be the case with my child, and he has been on it for over a year now. Of course every person's body chemistry is different and reacts differently to particular medications.

Thanks again.

How many miligrams is your son on? My son is 4yrs old and was on 5mg of singulair. He had horrible side affects. He turned into a totally different little boy. I know 2 other mothers whos children are also 4yrs old and they are on 4mg with no bad side affects. I don't think you are supposed to take 5mg until age 6. I think the milligram you are on has something to do with the way it affects you. Although, I would never ever EVER give my son another singulair even if I knew that it would not cause bad side affects. It has caused so much damage. Please watch your child closely and if you question anything at all take your child off of it. I hope everything goes well for you.
