I just got off topamax after being on 800 mg/day for over a year....

I just started Topomax last night and noticed slurred speech this morning. I didn't know that slurred speech was a side effect of Topomax. No where on any web sites that I have looked up on Topomax has slurred speech been listed. I am almost scared to take it again. I am taking Topomax for migraines.

Hi I am on Topamax for seizures and mirganes. I am in remission from brain cancer, and I have been on 150mg a day for almost two years now. I never knew most of my problems were from the medicine like not remembering, and not able to form words. My second grader does better than i do most days. I am cold all the time, now everyday i have a mirgaine it is just when i catch it as to what med i have to take to fight it. So it does not always work. I also have no sex drive, and it is hurting my marriage.

How is the Lamictal for you? What kind of side effects are you getting from that? I take Topomax for seizures as well. I am currently on 400mg/day. I have learned how to treat most of the side effects, except for the change in my menstrual cycle, the forgetfulness, and absentmindedness. The loss of words is killing me. I was fine when I was on 200mg/day. But since raising to 400mg it has been the difference like night and day. And of course there is absolutely NO sex drive. My husband is about to lose his mind. This has been about two years of Topomax's side effects. He says my mood and daily demeanor has been altered. And looking at myself I would have to agree. Overall I am not the same person. I would love to be the easy going person I was a few years ago. But Topomax has been the one medicine out of the last four that has controlled my seizures. My doctor talked to me about Lamictal at my last appointment. That is what he would transition me to. He said it would take about 3 months to wean me completely off of the Topomax and onto the Lamictal by itself...is that how it was for you?

The Lamictal (generic version is Lamotrigine) is working well for me. Yes, it took approximately 3 months to wean me off the Topamax. I have more energy, my sex drive is back, and my relatives have noticed that I'm not repeating myself as much.

Also, Lamictal is cheaper. In fact they released a generic version, Lamotrigine, about a month ago.
