I know that it is frightening to take your child off of a medication that the "experts" are telling you that they need to be on. But be cautious. If your son is having side effects I would try anything other than singulair. My daughter was taking a combination of Singulair, Advair, and Zyrtec for her asthma and allergies also. After 3 1/2 years of being on this medication my daughter slowly transformed from a sensitive and caring girl to a depressed, confused, miserable, and angry young woman. She committed suicide on Feb. 3, 2007. A few months after her death reports of these side effects began to become public. Please be cautious and weigh the positives and the negatives of this medication carefully. Yes it can work, but at what cost? Also be sure to report the side effects to Merck and the FDA and ask your Doctor to do the same.
My son was only on this medication for one week. I would say that naturally he is a bit of a worrier. After one week of this medication he had full blown anxiety attacks, horrific nightmares, aches in his legs , anxiety causing hyperventilation, couldn't eat food because it felt like it was being caught in his throat. He has been off the medication for 5 weeks now and has not had nightmares in a full week but anxiety came back yesterday again, I wouldn't call it a full blown anxiety attack like we have had in the past five weeks but he was definately frightened. I find that as soon as he gets overly tired he gets anxious again. This medication takes hold of some individuals. It is dangerous and has caused my son and our family so much pain. Give it time, it gets better but it can be a very slow process. Your son is young so he should get over it more quickly. My son is almost 10 and is very aware of what has happened to him. He even told me to stop this medication that it was going to kill him that he was feeling in a way that he had never felt before. I took him to the doctor and let him explain to his doctor how he had been feeling, when she heard it directly from him she took it seriously and reported it to her singulair representative. I reported to Canadian and US FDA. Please report this drug , there are so many unsuspecting families still giving this to their children and don't understand why their kids are scared and having nightmares. I hope that your child recovers quickly.
Hi.I just wanted to let you know that my daughter who also takes Singulair had experienced trouble sleeping. For us the simple solution was to give her the medicine immediately before bedtime.I literally give it to her as I am saying goodnight. She hasn't had trouble since, once she's asleep she stays asleep.
Consider taking your son to a specialist to treat his asthma. My son's new allergist said she rarely prescribes Singulair because it is not the best treatment for asthma or allergies. You can find more information on our advocacy website www.parentsforsafety.org and read the recommendations from the National Asthma Education and Prevention Program on the homepage. Good luck with your son.

My 7 year old son was prescribed Singulair for his allergies and asthma. Shortly after being on it he started to become very anxious about the littliest things. He would worry about things he never used to worry about and he said he got very nervous to the point where his heart started to beat very fast. We finally decided to take him off the Singulair seeing as it seemed to start after he started taking the medicine. It has been almost about a week and a half and he seems less nervous so we are hoping that everything is going to be okay. It is so hard to watch him go through this and not be able to help him feel better. I know Singulair has been a great drug for some but I think from now on we will stay away from allergy medications.
