My son is almost 5 now and has severe food and inhalant allergies, along with sever asthma. When he was 3 he was hospitalized for 4 days because of his asthma. I have been warned that only 1% of asthmatics will ever be hospitalized, so I've made sure he stays on all his meds. He has been on Singular ever since he was 15 months old. At first it was a God send. Everyday was a constant challenged, fussy, icthy red eyes, constant flow of mucous and wheezing. I would have to pin him down 6 times a day with the inhaler, but when Singular came "poof" it was like magic. He was on Singular when he was hospitalized and is now on 3 meds; Zrytec, Singular and Q-var all given to him everyday. Lately we have had some major issues come up for him. I think I have the next J. D. living with me. NO FOR REAL. My next step is a shrink. You might think I'm mean for saying it, but I don't know how else to describe it. When I was driving he asked for some gum, because I wouldn't let him pick out his own piece, he got out of his car seat and started hitting me over and over again, pulled my hair and tried to "break my arm" as he put it. I had to pull over and I couldn't get him to calm down he kept slapping me in the face and kicking me not only was I embarrassed, but it hurt, I was crying. I have finally come here trying to see if other children, who are on Singular, have had similar episodes. He is a very good boy most of the time and aggression is a hit and miss. I don't know what to do.

I have a 12 yr old son I had to take off of Singular. It made him very aggressive and moody. I am glad to finally find someone else who has had this type of situation, because the doctor thought I was crazy for taking him off of this medication since has has severe allergies.

My son also became very aggressive on Singulair. He was on it for 5 years and had tantrums that occurred too easily and took too long to recover from. They got worse over time. When we took him off we noticed a drastic personality change.

All children have tantrums but it is NOT normal for a five year old to attack another person over something so trivial. The rage and lack of control you described is something I saw in my own son while he was on Singulair but not when he went off it. Accept flindy's invitation to visit the parentsforsafety.org site. About half way down the home page is a link to the recommended treatment for asthma. Singulair is NOT part of it! As far as I am concerned, this drug should only be used as a LAST RESORT. Since you son does have asthma, I would not recommend stopping treatment until you have taken him to his allergist and requested another medication for him. Keep in mind also that drugs such as Advair can also cause behavioral symptoms in children.

On another note: if your son is allergic to milk, make sure you have his doctor check any inhaled medications for milk protein. Advair Diskus, Pulmicort, and many other inhaled asthma treatments are not supposed to be used by people with severe milk allergies. Do NOT assume his doctor will know this. On four separate occasions my son was prescribed inhaled asthma treatments he shouldn't have been because of his milk allergy!

You can also have your son's pharmacist "flag" his account with his allergies in case a physician prescribes a drug that has components to which he is allergic.

Good luck to you and your son. If you think the Singulair is affecting his behavior and his doctor doesn't agree, go with YOUR gut. Parents have been told that Singulair didn't have ANY side effects and was perfectly safe.
But parents of children who suffered psychiatric disturbances while on singulair that went away after singulair was stopped know the truth!!!
