I'm 45 I had the mirena inserted 5 1/2 years ago for heavy and painful periods that made me acutely anemic. I had the second Mirena 10 months ago. Until i read this site and others like it I thought I was going mad. Only advantage for me has been super light periods. Have had weight gain round stomach, thighs and butt and cannot shift it despite doubling exercise and halving food intake. Have constant headaches and reccurrant sinus infections and memory/concentration problems, water retention nearly all month long and feel depressed most of the time. also oily skin libido is non existent! also joint pains and insomnia. Doctor said it was menopause but tests came back negative. Have an appointment next week to have it removed. A bit anxious about how heavy periods will be as they were pretty awful before but can't handle these side effects. Any one else my age whose had mirena removed how long before periods back to normal?

I had Mirena put in around one year ago. Just recently I realized that NONE of my pants fit right. I am having to line dry everything I own and go up at least one size in everything! My boobs are huge, and I want nothing to do with sex! I weight 20 pounds more today than the day I left the hospital with my daughter. I could not figure it out. I workout four days a week, burning at least 500 cal. each workout, and I eat salad for lunch and dinner with some other vegetable and still no weight loss. THEN, I figured it out! What the hell? My OB-GYNn just sent me a reminder for my yearly appoiontment-its coming out! Has anyone had success losing weight after the Mirena's removal?

i thought I'd reply as I have experienced similar problems. I am 47 and actually had the mirena taken out 5 wks ago after 18mths with no periods and bad back and joint pains, but like you not sure whether any of the symptoms were menopausal! Anyway I still have back and joint problems and have not had a period yet so confused as to whether periods take a long time to come back or i am indeed suffering now from menopausal symptoms (lucky me). I think I'll go and get a home testing kit to be sure. maggie
