I have been on 20 mg Lipitor for years, and as I also have Rheuma...

I have been on 20 mg Lipitor for years, and as I also have Rheumatoid Arthritis, all my symptoms have been blamed on that. I have been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and put on Lyrica because of the muscle aches and depression. My lower back, hurt in a car accident when I was 17 years old, had gotten so much worse that I had 12 steroid shots in my lower spine a couple of years ago. They didn't help my back at all, but my blood sugar went from normal to diabetic levels, and I am now on Byetta to try to lower it. I am a 56 year old woman who was the math specialist in a school district until last December when I had to retire early. My back pain was so severe that I could no longer go from school to school carting materials. I could barely make it from the parking lot to my office. Mentally I was not ready to retire, but physically, I was (and am) a wreck. I have severe muscle pain in my shoulders, sometimes one or the other, but always present. I have tingling in my right hand, especially in my fingertips, and have trouble gripping and drop things easily. In the last few months the pain in my right thigh and calf has gotten unbearable. I thought at first it was sciatica, but I have had sciatica before, and this isn't the same, although there is tingling, burning , but the pins and needles is so deep in the muscles I have just sat and cried, or wanted to scream. I have wished I could just cut my leg off. And...I am on some pretty heavy duty pain killers for the RA: a small dose of prednisone plus Enbrel, Methotrexate, and Vicodin, and this pain is cutting right through all these meds. I get severe headaches, I went off Lipitor for 5 days and seemed a little better, but then went back on, and it came back. Since I no longer work, I sleep longer, am exhausted ALL the time, have terrible mental fog, am clumsy, cannot stand for more than a minute or so without wanting to scream, cannot walk more than a few yards...just getting to the car is an ordeal. I tell people that I can only shop in shoe stores and furniture stores...the only stores with places to sit down. I no longer cook or clean, cannot play with my granddaughter, even holding a book to read can be too much, and I love reading. I feel I am just dying bit by bit as I lose parts of myself. My doctor is really into lowering cholesterol, and has put me on Zetia in the past few months...and it has been in this time that the pain in my leg has gotten unbearable. He wants my cholesterol to be between 50-60, and has said that the Zetia along with the Lipitor will do that. Is this normal or in any way reasonable??? I am having a full blood workup done tomorrow morning, and I want to go off the Lipitor starting the day after. I came across this web site tonight while looking up Lipitor side effects, and I am shocked. I have so many of these symptoms, and there are so many I had no knowledge of at all. I knew about the muscle aches, but that's all. I hope someone can help me with what supplements and vitamins I should be taking. I started taking CoQ10 a month or so ago. What else should I be taking for my health? I know vitamin C and fish oil, but don't know how much or anything else. Right now I am just stunned with the thought that all of these problems that have left me unhappily retired, exhausted and in constant pain can all be caused from a drug I have been taking to help me be healthier.

Lancbet, Thank you for posting your story. I am very sorry to hear about what has happened to you. I work every morning on this issue in an effort to bring to an end the great statin fraud that has harmed more people than terrorism.

There is a word in the English language that best describes the act of a physician who drives someone's cholesterol down to the 50-60 range. That word is "Murder" since a cholesterol level that low will not support adult life for any sustained length of time.

I have never made a statement like this before to anyone. But if you doctor was really trying to shove your cholesterol down to 50- 60 range as you state, I think your physician was trying to kill you. If your physician had no intent to kill, then your doctor is practicing medicine without the cognitive ability to do so, and needs to STOP practicing immediatly.

If you are in the united States, at your choice, you could file a complaint with your State medical examiner boards. They are the agency who can revoke your doctors license to practice medicine. I usually don't advocate this, however in your case I do. And I think that doing so will save the lives of others.

Recent studies are showing higher cholesterol levels are associated now with longevity. The Honolulu heart study shows that folks between the ages of 70-90 lived longer than those with low cholesterol. This was not a small difference up to chance. There was a HUGE margin. 65%.

Furthermore, Low LDL cholesterol is now being studied for association with skyrocketing cancer rates.

The association of cholesterol levels and heart disease has rapidly faded and is now considered a "fairy tale" by many.

I would reccomend stopping the statin. Give sales and marketing a HARD KICK in the booty.

I wish you the best. You have a chance to recover. 300 mg CoQ10 per day. 2 x 1000 mg fish oil per day. Get plenty of sunshine for vitamin D. Eat wild Salmon for healthy fats to restore nervose system and Myelin sheath around nerves. Hot baths in Epsom salts. The magnesium sulfate will help. This will take time. Pins and needles will slowly fade. Gradually you will improve.

BTW, I forgot to add. If you have RA, you should have never been prescribed lipitor in the first place. RA is an autoimmune disorder that puts you at HIGH RISK for muscle damage when taking a statin. Your doctor should know this.

I used to take the Lipitor and Zetia and thank goodness I stopped the dangerous drugs 9 mos. ago. I still have many side effects. Unfortunately, drs. don't know anything about the side effects of the drugs they continue to push. There are many natural products for health issues.

PLEASE STOP TAKING LIPITOR AND ZETIA !!!!

Hi, sorry about your tradgedy and this is just a support note for you.
I suffered everything you have mentioned and more, I was certainly down to my last few days when a friend from out of town stopped in took one look at me and said you have got lipex (New Zealand) poisoning my doctor had had me taking 22 tablets a day.Prior to becoming responsible for my health I took no pills a day. Had my friend not stopped in I can assure you I was preparing for my eyuthansia, I find myself now in the most uneviable situation that I now simply do not trust doctors. Hopefully you may avoid some of the pitfalls I had. Once I stopped taking the medicine there was some immediate relief in some areas but in other areas it got a whole lot worse before it got better my eyeballs spasmed, my heart was having massive painful spasms there was not a part of my body that was not effected. I was 6 months after stopping the medicine before I started remembering neighbours names whom I had know for a long time. A sudden noise would send massive pain waves through my body. All toilteries and reproductions tottaly disfunctional (but not painful). Emotions anger ability to speak what I was thinking all wrecked. i was agitated like a stroke victim and a "terrets"? victim. I used the f and C words talking to an elderly catholic priest in normal conversation. I have since revisited the priest to apologise he was seriously interested in the medicine. I now have almost 5 years of apologising to do. I physically stopped a car while I was walking one night and proceeded to attack the car with my walking stick. I heard voices at night and the next morning found the axe out make me now wonder if it could have been a massive tradgedy. I had a total hip replacement that I now know was not needed my massivly pained joints were a result of the statins. i have not fully recovered fron the hip operation 17 cruel months later. My point of this is don't be to alarmed over the next few months as your memory returns. i am upset I fell out with my doctor though i now absolutely hate him, I wished I had of stayed with him rather than trying to start a new relationship with another doctor whom I have reduced respect for. You also read other victims accounts on this site where they go through numerous new doctors. So may be better the devil you know until you are out of serious trouble??. COQ10 you need to make sure you get the RIGHT BRAND. Indepenant studies keep showing that Kaneka ubiquinol NOT ubiquinone is up to 500% more bio available than other products I certainly noticed the difference once I got to the "good stuff". I would also suggest that you be taking at least the 300 mgs already suggested to you for the first couple of months once I got on to the right brand I was taking 5 - 600 mgs spread through the day (not the evening) It helped my overall situation by approx 25%, decreased pain increased energy settled the irregular heart beat.
I would also suggest you consider purchasing your own blood pressure meter. It did give me a physco' boost as I saw my irregular heart beat go back to normal. I'm quite sure there is no 14 day "FIX-IT" pill. I stopped taking statins mid Dec last year, I still take pain killer daily though I am 80% less of a man than I was I am 4 zillion trillion % better tahn I was at your present stage. A couple of helpful sites are spacedoc DOT net and doctoryourself DOT com. Spare a thought for the poor buggars that don't have access to a pc or in my case a friend that didn't stop in. The arguments go on about the value of the medicine etc etc but there is no argument that the manufacturers of this medicine state can cause muscle pain memory loss etc etc so in your case, my case and probably most cases the blame lies clearly with the doctor not stopping the medicine simply as a process of elimination. Good luck to you and as my wife and best mate (she's had a bloody miserable ride with me over this) keeps saying BE KIND TO YOURSELF. Heartfelt regards to you.
