As a fairly healthy 34 year old male, I went to my doctor for help getting over poison ivy mid-July 2008. I received the Kenalog 40 injection without being advised on any potential side effects. Within 36 hours I started having severe anxiety attacks with spikes in my blood pressure and vision problems (spotty, increased sensitivity to light). These attacks continued for 4-8 weeks during which time I underwent an MRI (head), stress test, and blood work to make sure nothing else was causing my symptoms.....conclusion: everything normal. My doctor prescribed me Xanax to help with the out of control anxiety. Started feeling more normal 60-90 days later. I started trying to run on my treadmill to get back in shape at the 90 day mark, and once again....symptoms returned. It's been a couple of weeks and I'm getting closer to being back to "normal", but I have no idea how long it will be before the Kenalog has completely metabolized out of my system, and I can get on with life. This has been a horrible experience and I would caution anyone from receiving this drug!

I had epidural kenalog 40 injections which have nearly destroyed my life. I was not informed about the side effects or even told that this medication is not approved for epidural injections. It is approved only for intamuscular or intra retinal (I believe retinal) injection. It is used as an off-label drug by many pain management practioners without consent of the patient. The manufacturers website specifically states what it is and isn't to be used for. It is highly toxic and has many severe complications. I suggest you read thru the different links until you find the side effects. I was so sick, and still am and we are just now getting to all the problems it has created and I am a living example that the side effects are just what they say they are. My injections were 2 years ago and I have never been the same. I was never sick in my life until the injections. Alos there is a Burton report (type in Burton reports in your search bar) until you find the one about Kenalog 40 though you might find it just by going thru the Kenalog 40 links. I have been extremely sick ever sine the injections and almost died on a couple of occasions. Cortisone can destroy your adrenal gland or damage it. Whether thru systemic cortisone or cortisone injection, especially if they are not performed right. I suggest you see an endocronologist or your family doctor to have your adrenal function checked. I have wanted to sue this doctor but have been so sick that my life is filled with every specialist you can imagine. You may want to talk to any attorney. After reading the Burton report on this drug you will find there is no informed consent by the patient as the patient was never informed. I would first take care of your health. I also had a heart attack afterwards or during as I had an ekg jutst prior to these injections and 5 weeks later had another ekg which infdicated a myocardial infarction. I was only 49 years old and never had any health problems except a couple of herniated discs in my lumbar spine. Reading the horrible side effects will scare the daylights out of you. It is a very poisonous drug!!!! If I had only known. I was totally agianst the injections to start with but felt it may keep me from having surgey which it didn't. I wish you the best of luck and strongly advise you to get a thorough work-up, liver panel, metabollic panel, thyroid panel, every panel you can think of and have everything checked so you may get proper treatment if necessary.

This is a very dangerous drug as you already know. Read the links and the manufacturers website on this drug. It isn't approved for epidural injections of any kind. It has nearly destroyed my life and actually has. I have been extremely sick for 2 years with no prior history of illness. Keep going through the links and reading about this very dangerous drug. You may have problems for life. As you go through the links, look for the "Burton Report" on this drug. Also the manufacture's website indictes the only purposes it should be used for. Are you in CA? Did you have this done at Cedar's Sinai Pain Institue? Have your adrenal funtion checked as cortisone can damage or burnout your adrenals and cause sever problems. Also have your doctor send you to an infectious disease specialists and see if there are viruses that have evolved as it can set off viruses which typically lyr dormant in your body. I have read blog after blog about steroids, ether systemic, nnasal, oral or injections causing viral infections to surface. Kenalog 40 is a very dangerous drug!!!!! If you come across the links which indicate the side effects you will really need the xanax. You may have CFS or Epstein Barr as they are often triggered. I also strongly recommend stopping the xanax and switching to Klonopin. Xanax has severe side efffects as well. Read about Xanax. It is not indicated for more than 4-8 weeks without severe side effects. I too was given xanax, 1 mg a day for 1 year. Then wean yourself off the Klonopin or get to a pain doctor or a doctor who can get you off the xanax safely. If you have been on Xanax for more than 8 weeks you may have severe side effects when trying to stop taking it on your own.
