PLEASE HELP! My father, age 74, was on lipitor for a year or so and then was switched to zocor a few weeks ago to help control his cholestorol. In the past week, the tightening he experienced in his leg, while on lipitor, has become debilitating leg pain now while he is on Zocor. Ultrasounds have ruled out a blood clot. He has no pain when he sits, but he describes the pain has his calf wanting to explode when he stands and he cannot walk with out the help of a cain. The pain radiates from his leg up to his hip. His cardiologist has taken him off the zocor for a few weeks to see if there is an improvement. It has been 3 days and he feels a bit of relief. SO here is the million dollar question: His labs indicate his cholestorol is normal now, most likely thanks to the statins.....can anyone suggest another form of meds that will help regulate his cholestorol....say COeq10 and fish oil? Any help is SO appreciated!!! Thanks to each of you for your posts. It is so comforting for my dad to know he isn't developing a new issue and that it can be resolved with the removal of zocor!

Stopping the statin drugs is the wisest thing your Father could do. It may take more than 3 weeks to recover from statin damage. While some people recover quickly, others take months, even years to recover. Since your Father is 74 years old, you may be interested in the results of the Honolulu Heart study. People between the ages of 70 to 90 who had higher cholesterol lived longer and had fewer health problems than those with low cholesterol. In other words, higher cholesterol became associated with longevity in this age group. I would recommend 300 mg daily coQ10 and yes to 2.5 grams fish oil per day. These are excellent for his health and have no side effects. But LDL cholesterol itself may be the best thing for your father right now. The LDL cholesterol is very important in making tissue repairs to muscle and nerves. Thats its job in human biology.

you also have to remember that the artificially low recommended cholesterol levels have been cooked up by "expert" doctors on drug company payrolls to get more people to take drugs.
your body makes cholesterol- it makes as much as it needs. if you eat a lot of animal fat, you will add unnecessary cholesterol to what your body makes on it's own for itself
one way to get your body's cholesterol levels to what they should be, regardless of what the drug company's charts say they should be, is to stop eating animal products

Yes, the lab values for cholesterol are set low. I call this the "adjusted for profit lab values" as they make absolutely no biological sense. Low cholesterol has its own set of health problems.

Hi either Bobby or Drmike sometime ago mentioned that in the drug manufacter's own trials they showed that this statin medicine had either no or minimal benifit to elderly or women. Also under drmike 777 he has a link to a cardiolist survey that showed 70% of people that took statins within 6 months developed cardiomyoapathy. I'm comming up 55 and male my mum is mid 70s and this is the absolute pits that we find ourselves not trusting our medical proffession right at the time when we need the greatest security. Clearly you neither want to distress your dad nor take responsibility for something you are not qualified but since I took control of my heart, dumping my accupril, betalok and low dose asprin I no am calmer have a regular heartbeat and perfect blood pressure. I don't want to argue with ANYONE about anything at my stage of life. If dad's plumbing slows up try giving him 6 x 1000 mgs of vitamin c spread evenly through the day and a couple of large glasses of water B4 bed. i now know 4 men me included up to 76 yrs old who within 4 days all blasted the sign writing off the bowl. I know another man who had prostrate surgery and now deeply regrets the procedure and not researching himself. Good luck with dad you are a good daughter. Best to you from New Zealand.

Don´t worry about your father`s, or your own cholesterol level.

There are doctors/scientists that are of a completely different opinion.

Please "educate" yourself by reading books and look for information.

Here are some suggestions: The Great Cholesterol Con (Anthony Colpo)
The Cholesterol Myths (Uffe Ravskov)
Malignant Medical Myths (Joel F. Kauffman)
Overdosed America (John Abramson)
The Truth About The Drug Companies (Marcia Angell)

Google for "Stopped our statins". Read the article from Weston Price Foundation. You will find it under "articles to print" to the left on the first page.

Also visit Duane Gravelines site. Google for his name and you will find it. He has also written some books. One of which is Lipitor - thief of memory.

When it comes to your father´s symptoms it brings back some memories. I remember how a close friend used to describe his pain in his legs. He was on the same medication (all statins have similar side effects).

It felt like a welding thorch?.

He also had problems with his hips/groins and he said that it felt as if an iron rod was going through both of his hips.

He was about the same age as your father and had a lot of other problems as well. It`s a terribly long and sad story.

I sincerely hope your father will improve.

I am a Bioslife Franchise owner. Unicity International is the parent company. Biolslife Complete is the ONLY natural supplement on the market today that can not only lower total cholesterol levels, it lowers the LDL, while raising the HDL. There is no drug available that can do that and do it naturally. Bioslife Complete also lowers blood sugar levels, food cravings and is in the Physicians Desk Reference. I have been given every cholesterol drug made, had 2 ER visits due to reactions, and have been on Zocor for 10 years. I am left with fibromyalgia side effects.(muscle pain, fatigue and weakness) I started taking Bioslife in July, have my energy back and my cholesterol is so great I am Zocor free for the first time in 10 years. Bioslife has had such a profound effect on my life that I became a Franchise Owner. Please check out my website and judge for yourself. I will be thrilled to help you in any way possible. www.unicity.net/suzannechapkis

ok, My mom is 88 cholesterol over 400 !!! Got her off all the drugs, she feels much better. Its all garbage. I am 58, was on choleterol drugs for over 6 years. Major weakness, muscle pain, fatigue, hair loss, rapid weight loss, the whole nine yards. Now? Off ALL the drugs, feel great now. Screw the drugs, I will die with high cholesterol. 50 percent of all heart attact victims have low cholesteral. We all are going to die, nursing homes cost 6K to 7K per month. Stop worring about it and enjoy your life. Ok, thats my two cents.
