I just recently had the mirena iud inserted. Oct 30 2008. 3 months after having my first child under a normal vaginal delivery. When I have asked my doctor regarding any side affects he stated that women may have heavy bleeding the first 6 months/ and that after those 6 months that your periods will actually disappear. The first week that I had the mirena in, I began bleeding almost instantly. Blood clots the size of my closed fist came out of my body from the uterine wall I suppose. I went through a super tampon/ and a pad in an hour and a half. ( I am one of those women who normally use a super tampon maybe once in a while/ normally a reg. size does the job) This bleeding has not stopped since the mirena was inserted. Looking at a computer screen is part of my daily routine at work. It seems as though my eyes feel blurry through out the day as I am working. Towards the end of the day I can barely stand to look at it. This has never happened to me before. It is almost like I want to turn all lights off and sit in the dark, with no noise(headaches). Of course sex drive is at the all time low. Who is in the mood to go for it when you are bleeding with a terrible headache? The first few nights I had a horrible time falling asleep and staying asleep. Well... at this point I have had headaches... all day for a week now. My head hurts like someone is pounding it against a wall. I have not had a headache in years. My stomach has been upset/ feeling as though I may have to throw up. I am afraid that I may start seeing the other symptoms that ladies have talked about. When you had the symptoms did they all happen at once or one at a time over different time periods?

With me, the side effects seem to come one at a time...but they added up...it's not like when one went away, another one showed up...one appeared, then another one...then another one...so they added up! Pretty soon I had headaches, stomach bloat, vision issues, insomnia, acne, and so on. I was taking Advil every single day because the headaches were constant. I, too, spend a lot of time at the computer at work and my vision defintely suffered. Lots of floaters, too.

After removal, it took about a month for the headaches to stop....now I only get them once in a while, as is normal. The vision did not return to where it was pre-Mirena, but it stopped degrading. I have to have reading glasses at the PC and when I read or I cannot see the print at all.

Take care of yourself.

I, too had vision issues. I noticed my eyes having trouble adjusting to distance, like when you are reading and then look up across the room. Also distance when driving. I had my Mirena put in last November and noticed the vision changes in January (or at least that is when I put it all together!) I had my Mirena out in May and am still fighting hair loss but all others symptoms seem to have slowly cleared up. (loss of libido, fuzzy brain, extreme anger/sadness, overwhelming emotional spells, body aches) Luckily I never had the headaches or heavy bleeding. In fact my period stopped altogether two weeks after insertion until I had Mirena removed. Good luck and take care!

My wife felt terrible when she first had her Mirena put in. She had some headaches (although not as bad as you) and generally felt bad, and she bled like crazy for the first month or two. She wanted the thing out, but after about a month and a half, her body adjusted to it and all that went away.

She still had some menstrual symptoms like PMS and some mild cramping, but very little bleeding. After about four years, in order to donate eggs, she had it taken out, and she now wishes she hadn't. She had become so used to the Mirena that she had completely forgotten about the heavy bleeding and painful cramps that she used to get. She is going to get it back in as soon as possible.

With her, the symptoms of the first month after putting it in mimicked the first month after taking it out. She bled heavily an entire month and a half after taking it out and had bad cramping (although no headaches) as her body readjusted. She's back to her normal cycles now, but it seemed to her to take forever.

I hope that you will eventuall adjust to it.

Get it out! I had the Mirena IUD in for a little over a year. I was just recently tested and found to have LOW, LOW , LOW progesterone levels. The new doctor told me that Mirena stops or slows your ovulation which produces progesterone. I had the IUD taken out a week ago. You haven't seen bleeding/clotting until you have it out!!!!!!! Misery! Now I have to take a natural progesterone cream during my cycle. Hopefully I will start feeling better. Check out Dr. Lee's website on hormones and his books about "Everything your doctor won't tell you about premenopause and menopause." Absolutely life-changing! You have to be your own advocate. Some ob/gyns get major kick-backs from IUD suppliers, etc...

I had the Mirena fitted 4 weeks ago after the removal of a cyst on my ovary it was supposed to help with heavy blood flow. I have bleed continuously since then, chunks coming out each time and its worse after I do anything remotely energetic - like hoovering! I have constant headaches, sickness, backpain pain in my lower left uterus, spots, tummy pain, loose stools - I am also turning in to a real moody bitch. I want it out - but I don't see the consultant until 25th. Is it the Mirena or is it me - do I have something nasty?

I got mirena inserted about a month ago. I havent had all the terrible side affects.. however...i have had some. I dont think its as bad as most seem to say it is. Everyone is different and you will never truely know how you will react to it until you're on it. I have been bleeding everyday since i had it placed.. not heavy.. but deffinately enough to where i need to wear a pantiliner. I usually see a lot of dark/brown blood after cleaning myself after i use the bathroom. I have had constant cramps since inserted.. they come everyday..but dont last very long.. just short mild ones. I have lost weight after inserting it.. and my sexdrive is fine (but remember: its only been a month and this may change) My mood is normal.. but i have been a litte bitchy. I can admit to that. I wasnt able to feel the strings.. but my fiance was able to. I could reach that far i guess. I have an appt. on thurs. to follow up and to make sure everythings going good. Wish me luck!

I had Mirena put in in April of 2009. It hurt like hell for me, like having contractions (but everyone is different). I have had some blurry vision, some strange (occassional) chunky clots that are light tinge in color that comes out (utirine lining maybe?). I get mild cramping during ovulation and right before my period which has become much lighter I must say. I have noticed bloating and some tenderness if I push on my uterus area on the outside of my body. (although that could be a cyst that I've had on my ovary for a few years)...I'm not sure. Over all I like the non maintenance but my sex drive has also deminished a bit. Not a ton, but enough to notice. I have to wonder if this thing is as safe as they say it is....(?)
