I am so thankful for this site. I thought maybe it was just me. For one, I am allergic to Sulfa. My doctor knows this, as does my pharmacy. Still, they give me Lisinopril with Hydrochlorothiazide which you should NOT take if you have a sulfa allergy. From day one, I started with anxiety, agitation, nausea and what felt like a racing heart - though my pulse was normal. Day three I called the doctor and they said this was normal as my body "adjusted" to the medication. It has been over two weeks and the same thing keeps happening. I tried taking the meds at night to hopefully sleep through the side effects but no - it just kept me awake. I put another call in today and have yet to receive a return call from my doctor. I hope the doctor calls me and NOT the front desk girl because I have a lot of questions and concerns. Other symptoms I have been experiencing since I started Lisinopril are sever muscle cramping last for over 24 hours, dizziness, heavy chest/racing heart beat, restlessness and less frequent urination. For a 37 yo female who has to "potty" constantly, even throughout the night, going once in an 8+ hour period is not normal! The worst side effect though is definitely the anger and agitation. I feel like I am going to burst out of my skin or die banging my head against the wall. Last night I tossed and turned for 2 hours in agitation. I thought I would surely have a heart attack from the stress. Oh yeah my BP has NOT dropped at all (tho it fluctuates on or off the meds) on the 20 mg dose. Go figure.

I also am allergic to Sulfonamides and have high blood pressure and heart failure. Many of the antihypertensives have a sulfa of some type in them. In the case of Lisinopril with Hydrochlorothiazide, it is the dieuretic Hydrochlorothiazide that contains the Sulfonamide that you are allergic to. I was initially given Hydrochlorothiazide to lower my blood pressure. The immediate response was severe muscle pain in my extremities, irregular heart beat and I could go all day without having to urinate which isn't normal for me either. I spoke to my former doctor about this and he told me it was all in my head sulfa allergies are very rare. Luckily his nurse told me that she was sure I was allergic to sulfa or sulfomamides (same thing) and to ask the doctor to prescribe straight Lisinopril without the Hydrochlorothiazide. Which he did although I couldn't take that either due to shortness of breath and constant cough.
I have no idea why your doctor prescribed Lisinopril/Hydrochlorothiazide unless you have high blood pressure or heart disease. Dizziness, anger, loss of memory and confusion are not side effects of Lisinopril or other ACE inhibitors, but the drop in blood flow caused by lowering the blood pressure is. I would suggest asking your doctor to take you off of ACE inhibitors since they are not doing any good anyway. Also ask him to do tests to determine if your blood flow is normal and what problems with your heart you may have. Look up high blood pressure, heart failure, diastolic dysfunction and ask her/him if any of the drugs they have prescribed or are going to prescribe have sulfomamides in them they don't know so they will lie to you then before you have the pharmacy fill the prescription ask them about sulfonamides in the drug they do know and will tell you. I fought the same problems you are facing for over 5 years, went through 6 doctors and trained myself to know more about heart disease than the average doctor knows.
Hang in there and good luck.
