I took Wellbutrin 300 mg for two years before to quit smoking and for mild depression. After the initial (weeks 2-4) side effects of nausea, dizziness and headaches - I felt great. Not drugged and not overly emotional. I had been crying all the time and felt hopeless. I felt much better (and didn't want to smoke at all). I quit it for about 2 years and now I am back on Wellbutrin for the last 7 months. I started with Cymbalta - but hated the loss of sex drive (not able to orgasm - so who wants to have sex, right?) and felt drugged. So Wellbutrin was a welcome "old friend" I didn't have bad side effects with switching and have been pretty happy. EXCEPT for the one very scary side effect that I have experienced just a handful of times - but I really am curious if anyone else has had this HEAD TRIP WHILE DRIVING: It has happened when I'm on the interstate and/or bridge when I am driving at fast speeds, and my head feels whoozie all of the sudden and my brain seems to shift sideways - like on a roller-coaster, up and down, sideways - and I am amazed that my hands don't go with it and drive me into the wall! It takes intense concentration and wheel gripping to get myself where I can pull off the road. What the?? I don't want to ever experience this again - but it is so OCCASIONAL. The only variable I can think of is that I have not been faithfully taking the WB at the same time everyday (I'm more and more forgetful) and have skipped a day. Has ANYONE ELSE had a similar experience???

I had the same side effect just last Saturday as you spoke about! I was traveling on an interstate driving approx. 65 mph. I don't recall getting to my location-2 and a half hours of feeling as you noted. On my return trip is when I made note of it. At first I thought I was flu-ish, but not anymore. I have just been weened off of Effexsor XR while beginning the generic of Wellbutrin. I feel worse 20-30 minutes after taking the Wellbutrin than I had earlier in the day and it continues through the next day. Each time I take it, same reaction. A vertigo sense of swishing and swirling in my head. I am not taking any more of the medication beginning today.

OMG, I just had this EXACT feeling the other night driving...you explained it so well. Scared me to death, it was like a weightless feeling...so weird. I was just switched to the generic version of Wellbutrin and I was thinking maybe it was this new generic version doing this to me as I never had it happen when on the brand name Wellbutrin. Just wanted to let you know, that I too have experienced that same feeling while driving but I am on the generic version Budeprion.

I asked my doctor about this side effect while driving and she was noncommittal about it being the medication, but switched me from 300 mg to 150 mg of Welbutrin. HOWEVER, I have been taking the Generic versions and I wonder how much of a factor that is. The 300mg was called Bupropion HCl and now the 150 mg is Budeprion XL. I was prescribed an additional anti-depressant that"affects the other chemical in the brain" seratonin. It is also a generic called Citalopram HBR. I have been exceptionally HAPPY lately (life is good and I'm excited about the holidays)...but I think it's the meds also. But I do have more headaches and less sex drive! Would Love to get off of everything - but realize I need some help. I am going to ask for the BRAND name Welbutrin - even if it costs me more, it will be worth it!

I don't know if I am having the same feeling that you guys are talking about. I have been on Wellbutrin 300 for about 2 months and I noticed this about after 6 weeks; I feel as if my brain is shifting sideways but I feel so only when I close my eyes and am trying to sleep. I feel as if my entire body is sinking and I feel very light headed. Its SO SCARY and sometimes I even scared to close my eyes and now I always have my music on to distract me!! I love the way you explained it cuz I exactly feel as if my brain is on a roller coaster but I have never felt it during driving :S

I just went looking to see if anyone else had this effect because it JUST happened to me, also while driving. I pulled to the side because I was scared something bad was about to happen. But it passed. I'm taking the real deal, no generic, 150mm, faithfully at the same time every day and I'm on week 4. I HOPE this doesn't become a regular thing.

I'm just thinking of trying wellbutrin so I was reading these postings and came across this. I have to comment because this has happened to me multiple times in my life but I've never been on anything. I've asked the doctor about it and he couldn't really answer as to why. He said I don't breathe like most people. He tested me breathing deeply, and most people can do that for a minute before hyperventilating, but I only lasted 15 seconds. (you may want to test yourself) He also suggested it might be a vertigo kind of thing since it only happens when I'm driving. It could be that you get used to the side rails and then when you go over a bridge and what your peripheral vision has been seeing changes - it causes some strange vertigo thing. I found both of those suggestions disappointing because I don't think either is the case but I'm fascinated that there are people out there experiencing the same thing even though the rest of you associate it with Wellbutrin.
