My mother is 74 and has been on Lipitor 5 mg for about 6 weeks now and has experienced her 1st TGA. She called me today to tell me that someone had come into her house and cooked a platter of bacon and moved a basket around. She couldn't find her purse and went outside and sure enough it was in her car, but the door was standing wide open and the purse was sitting on the seat. She remembers nothing! This evening she swore that our second child was born in a different house. This from a woman who can remember the tiniest minutia. This Lipitor is terrible stuff! She is now officially off of it. R.

Good that your mother has stopped taking this dangerous drug. It can cause MANY side effects.

Roy, thanx for your posting. You may be interested in contacting Dr. Duane Graveline who also experienced TGA on lipitor and has written books about it. One called "Lipitor, theif of memory" You can also go to his website at spacedocDOTnet. The human brain relies on about 20% of the body's cholesterol for cognitive function. Memory problems are very commonly reported now. Just curious, what did her doctor say?

Most statins can affect your thinking and memory.

I think that people on statins suffer from side effects of this kind but are reluctant to talk about it. They may also think it`s part of normal ageing (which it`s not).

Here`s a story from Sweden.

One day I was talking to a friend of my sister. It was about the side effects of statins. I mentioned Lipitor.

I, immediately, saw that she reacted so I asked if she, or someone else, were taking this medication.,

She said - my husband - and he had to go to the hospital
I asked her what had happened.

She told me that her husband had phoned her at work around 11 a.m. He had asked her if they had met that morning. He could not remember. It was as if time had passed without him knowing what he had been doing (taking a walk?).

She told him that she had left home 2 hours earlier..

She suspected that something serious had happened to him and phoned the hospital. They sent an ambulance.

She left work and went home immediately to assist her husband on his journey to the hospital.

At the hospital they did all kinds of tests but they could not find anything wrong nor could they explain his sudden memory loss (TGA). They just said - these things happen!

At the last moment the wife remembered that she had taken along the latest medication - LIPITOR.

She asked if it - LIPITOR - could have anything to do with her husbands experience.

The doctor immediately, without checking, said NO.

When this couple came home they decided to read the package insert for the first time and sure enough, there it was, something about the memory.

I would suggest that everyone reads the information before you start taking any medication.

But remember that that there are many side effects which are not known when a medication is put on the market.

Trust your own instinct when it comes to side effects - it`s your body.
