Since I'm not a doctor I can only tell you of my experience with Mirena, relative to the bone cracking issue. I only had the Mirena for 5 months and had so many side effects that I had to have it taken out. 3 months after removal, I started having hot flashes (I did not have a period at all after the removal...at all)...my Dr did blood work and my estrogen level was so low that between that and my FSH level being way high, it was determined that I was POST-menopausal at 43. Because I am much younger than the average menopause age, my doctor put me on transdermal estrogen to protect my heart and my bones. He did do a PIXI scan of my ankle prior to starting the HRT....my bones were ok, but just barely. (And I started taking calcium supplements when I turned 30). One thing I have noticed, after having been on the HRT for 6 months now is that my bones do not pop, creak and crack the way they used to. My neck used to hurt every morning and I sounded like a bowl of Rice Krispies when I got out of the bed....no more. So it seems that the hormonal imbalance (too little estrogen, too much progesterone) is what caused this for me. My blood work showed that the progestin in the Mirena did not stay local....maybe this is happening with you...perhaps it has disrupted the normal hormonal balance. Deterioration of the bones sounds like Osteopenia or Osteoporosis....which isn't cancer. You are young for this, but you wouldn't be the only one. What did your doctor suggest you do now? I am walking with ankle weights now -- I try to do it every day -- and taking a prescription strength calcium supplement. I will get a full DEXA scan in 2 years. You should take the bone loss seriously....the more you can do now to slow it down, the better you will be later when you are older! Take care.
Thanks for the info. I am definitely gonna demand to have those tests done, especially the hormone test. My doctor referred me to Physical Therapy, which I don't think its gonna do much for me. I just want to get to the bottom of this, so I made an appt with my Ob to discuss the mirena removal and the hormones testing. And lets see what she can do about my bones or I will make an appt with an orthopedic dr. Now that u mention it I've also been feeling like I'm having hot flashes too, but I'm not sure if that is what it is.
I too am having problems with anxiety, mood, hot flashes, and diziness... wondering if Mirena is to blame. After reading this, I am going to check and see if I can get this thing removed. I have tension everyday in my neck and headaches almost everyday.. I'd pay anything to have a solid good day. I got Mirena inserted 7 months ago and didn't have problems at first, until a couple months ago.. Thanks for your posting.
