Began taking 500mg of niaspan after 81 mil of Bayer 30 minutes prior (at 11:00 in the am) about 3 weeks ago. Recommended at this time since I do enjoy my 2 glasses of red wine at night. I then take 10mg of Lipitor before bed. Side effects have been swollen lips that keep peeling, after many OTC lip balms, racing heart and unbelievable insomnia. Only had flushing the first day before nurse, not doctor, told me about aspirin. I don't know whether my allergic reaction is the Niaspan or the Lipitor. I also had mild nausea and foot cramps at night. The nausea has subsided but not my lip problem. For one year prior to taking these drugs, I was on 10/40 of Vytorin but since all the negative results of that drug, my doctor has taken all his patients off of it.

vytorin is still a great drug. the ENHANCE trial is why it got so much bad press. It was a stupid trial, but if you are happy on another statin, also fine. Niaspan...take a full 325mg aspirin. Good you don't flush much, many do. Did you know Niaspan, (not OTC niacin, SR niacin or IR niacin, and especially not "no flush" niacin) is the ONLY FDA approved drug to regress atherosclerosis? that means it can remove plaque in your body!! it's amazing, but so many refuse to deal with a few side effects. This drug will save your life. most don't believe this, very sad. Stay on the 500mg for 4-5 weeks, then do 750mg for 4-5 weeks, then 1000. This is almost always enough to get the results you are looking for.
