I have been on prednisone continuously now for 15 years. I was put on it in March of 1995 for a lung condition called chronic eosinophilic pneumonia. I was 122 pounds when I first started prednisone. Now 15 years later I am 197 pounds. I am 35 years old with osteoporosis. I have dealt with depression, terrible headaches, stomach ulcers, hormonal imbalance, hair loss, swollen feet and ankles, I now wear glasses when I didn't before, I have thin skin now that looks older than my 35 years, I deal with night sweats, and in the summer out in the heat my very round moon face turns red as a beet. But, no one can get me off the prednisone. I have seen many specialists, and within 1-2 days of starting to wean past 10mg I get so sick I have to be hospitalized, I literally can't breathe or live without it. I hate this stuff and what its done to me, but I have no choice but to take it or I will die. Doctors have tried alternate medications, nothing but prednisone works. If there is ANYONE who has had to be on it as long as I have or have had success in getting off it after being on it for so long, I would love to hear from you.

Oral hydrocortisone--it's the natural, non-synthetic version of prednisone and doesn't have all those horrible side effects. Your doctor should know it as oral hydrocortisone or as Solu-Cortef. I can't believe he hasn't thought to try it with all the trouble you've had. For some reason, doctors don't seem to want to recommend it. I hope you can get some and that it will help! (The ratio is 4 to1, as in if you take 10 whatevers of prednisone, it would be equal to 40 of hydrocortisone).

I have been on prednisone now for 15 years. Over the last year my severe asthma as gotten worse. My doctors think that I am becoming steroid resistant which means that the 10mg I took daily no longer helps me. I m currently taking 40mg daily an I feel like I am losing my mind. Nothing else seems to help me and I am afraid that there will come a time when no amount of prednisonewill help either. I no this is not the response you were looking for, sorry but I really hate taking this stuff and I hate knowing that without it I would die

I don't know much about Eosinophilic pneumonia, but have been a victim of prednisone myself. After prednisone and after realizing my son has Environment/Vaccine induced autism, I will try natural remedy before taking any drugs.

This seems like an autoimmune disease, maybe you are allergic to something, maybe the air you breathe, have you moved?

Have you tried elimination diet. Have you tried not eating, wheat, gluten, milk, soy corn, any processed foods.

Known causes include certain medications or environmental triggers, parasitic infections, and cancer. EP can also occur when the immune system attacks the lungs, a disease called Churg-Strauss syndrome.

I'd read www.mercola.com he offers many good points on how to take care of yourself without doctors, of course he tries to sell stuff, but he offers a TON of information for free without buying his stuff

I've been on prednisone for over 20 yrs because of a genetic lung disease.
About 20 yrs ago I did get off it and was off for about 3 yrs so I could get a lung transplant which I got 7/18/91. Since my lung transplant, I've been able to get as low as 5 mg/da. I think the doctors try to taper patients much too fast. I learned that they only way I was able to reduce was to do it very, very slowly (I have 1 mg tablets).

For instance, last June I got a bad lung infection and had to take 40/mg day, and it's taken me until recently to get back down to 5/mg/day. It seems to be the hardest once I get below 10 mg, but as I said I take it very slowly. Take care, Kip
