How long has she been taking Singulair? This can be a very sneaky drug and the side effects CAN sneak up on you after some time. My recommendation would be to monitor your daughter very closely which I'm sure you're already doing. My 5 yr. old son showed no adverse reactions until he'd been on the drug for almost 3 months.
She's been on it since September, so that's 3 months. I am watching her and would take her off the drug if issues show up, but so far so good. I am praying that all continues to go well, as this is the first drug that really has helped her allergy issue... before this she was a disaster.. tired all the time, cranky, runny nose and like I said earlier, 2 ears filled with fluid that we'd been trying to get rid of for 4 months prior to starting singulair. If I could find something that worked as well, with less side effects I'd try it, but so far I haven't hear of any.. Thanks for the advice, I appreciate it!
We also did not notice changes in our daughter right away after starting Singulair. The mood, sleep, behavior changes happened very gradually and were not constant. It was difficult to make the connection to Singulair, especially since the pediatrician and allergist said that there were "few side effects" (at the time). Our daughter was on it from age 4 until 7 1/4. The last 6 months to 1 year were bad. If I could go back in time, we would give her antihistamines (and an inhaler, if needed). Beware - I have no doubt that this drug is powerful and accumulates in the brain! Also, 5 mg is a high dose for a 3 year old. Good luck to you.
I am a grandmother who has posted a few times on this website about the horror that my granddaughter endured for two years before we understood the effects of this drug. Like you the mind altering effects did not happen right away, you need to find an alternative NOW. This is a bad drug for children. I have written to my Senator and Congressman and to the FDA. Do not risk this, it's not worth it. Find an alternative, do research, your child is worth it.
My daughter was on this drug for 3 years before spiraling downhill quickly. She was very close to suicidal. Thankfully I found this website and took her off. Within a week symptoms started to abate. However, my daughter's friend was on Singular recently for a short time, against our advice, and she out of the blue started to develop asthma. I would highly recommend reconsidering this medication. No telling what irreversible sight effects your daughter may develop at any time. Not even Doctors know how powerful this drug is.
I have to agree with all the replys in front of mine,if it was as simple as taking this drug and having a reaction right away that you could say it must be the singulair, well that would be wonderful, but it is not,it is a slow decline, little things you can blow off, tired, hungrey, stressed etc. This is actually not the case,we as parents would never had put our children through this torture, had we off made the connection,it is slow it is suttle,it is devastating,it is a kind of torture nobody should endure, espesially a child
Our son was started on the medicine because of severe allergies that would cause terrible coughing. And thankfuly, we have had the same experience with our 2 year old son as you've had with your daughter. But I would like to warn you that what we have experienced (and why we are doing away with Singulair completely) is that his body is so used to having it that if he misses one dose he gets an unbearable cough that can take weeks to go away. I called my pediatrician's office daily over this over the last two months (and this was not the first time this has happened) and the nurse told me her mother is on the medicine and the same thing happens to her if she misses one dose. Unfortunately now we're back to the coughing fits while he gets it out of his system, but we just can't live with a medicine that causes this problem when he misses one dose in the middle of winter when allergies aren't much of an issue!
Good luck in whatever you decide to do.
Hello Joshnabbey..I am glad to read your post because I feel a little better knowing that there is someone else who is not experiencing side effects from Singulair.
My 7 years old started Singulair three months ago because of allergy issues. She had asthma attack every other week, running nose all the time, she was so miserable, she missed many days of school and she couldn't exercise .Since she started to take SIngulair her allergy improved, no more asthma, no more running nose. SIngulair did not change her way to be. She is doing very good in school (she is above the average..) she does piano, ice skating, she is purple belt Tae Know Doe, speak two languages, she is doing great in everything. Of course she has her "bad moments" but which child does not?
I tried homeopathy, but it did not work, she got worst and worst. I was supposed to give SIngulair to my daughter a year ago, I did not because I was afraid of the side effects. But I wished I had started before because I could have avoid so much steroids since she had asthma most of the time. The doctor convinced me to use this medicine when she said " You think SIngulair has side effects, yes sometime it does, but do you know the danger of using steroids so frequently in a little body?" Then I thought I had to give a try. I am glad I did. Of course I keep watching my daughter behavior closely and keeping looking for any rumor about this medication.
Sorry for my English ...still in the process of learning...
How long has she been on it. When my daughter first started taking it we felt like we had found a "miracle" medication. But then little things started happening. We never thought it was due to this medication that she had ben on. Keep a close eye out, watch for little side effects and stop the medication before you are like so many of us parents.
