My 7 year old female Siberian Husky, Niceah is suffering with her...

My 7 year old female Siberian Husky, Niceah is suffering with her second serious flare-up of IBD. She was taking 20 mgs. of prednisone every 12 hours for several days. We are now down to 12 mgs. daily and working towards 12mgs. every other day. She is lethargic and her body and belly have swollen frightfully to the point where it is difficult for her to lie down without grunting and sighing. She pants heavily. She drinks and eats constantly. Her nose is dry. Her tummy grumbles all day and night. I have been boiling chicken breast and mixing it with sweet potato and Enzymes & Probiotics. I am currently working with a holistic advisor concerning Niceah's diet once she has weened off the prednisone. The side effects of this drug are frightening and I am so worried that something more permanent and damaging will occur. Has anybody experienced this?? If so, I would appreciate any advise. Has anyone experienced this with a dog!? Because if you read anything here most PEOPLE have experience all the symptoms you mentioned.

Has your vet given your dog any water pills for the swelling in the belly and the shortness of breath. I am still on steroids and I have to take 7 water pills to take the fuild out of my belly so I can breath. Lots of other side effects for sure, Not a thing you can do about the. Good luck SanDee

Has your vet given you any water pills for your dog. It will take the swelling down in the belly and make it easier to breath. I take 7 water pills cause my belly was so swollen it was hard to breath. I can breath easier since I take the water pills and my belly is not as swollen. There are so many side effects with steroids. I wish you luck. At least I can go to my Dr and tell him how I feel. It must be really hard that your dog can not let you know how he feels. Good luck. Thanks so much for the water pill advice. Have contacted my vet already. I also thank you for your comfort and concerns. Niceah is my assistant pet therapy husky. We have been with eachother for many years. I was a female law officer permanently while in the line of duty and Niceah was trained to assist my disability. We are partners in sickness and in health. Thanks again! Robin

Hi. How is your dog today? Where you able to get water pills? I just wanted you to know that when your dog is on water pills he might have some leakage. So maybe you should put a towel under him. My dog had congestive heart fail and they had to put him on water pills. But he just could not get up so he wet on himself. Just wanted to let you know. Good luck, SanDee

Thank-you, SanDee. I am taking Niceah to the Vet hospital today. I just don't know if the prednosone is causing these horrible symptoms or there is a more serious underlying problem besides the IBD. We cut the dosage in half starting today.

i also have 6yr old siberian husky female who developed simialar conditions after age 2 plus bloody stool throwing up phlem after several thousand dollars of vet bills the vet assumed it was ibs and prescribed science diet low allergen food have had no other occurances since. the symptoms you describe are similar to what my dog went through 3 or 4 different times. vet told me take her for long walks at the time to ease pressure on the buildup in stomach. do you have any problems with rashs around your dogs eyes just a curious question because mine has a reoccuring rash around eyes goes away for awhile ten comes back john

i dont think its the prednisone causing this. the prednisone will cause to want to eat dont overfeed my vet stressed this part very strongly could make matters worse. if the dog is having a hard time digesting and too bloated ask vet about pepto bismal or something simiar. this sounds exactly like what i went through with my husky.talk to your vet about the low allergen food of course you have to cut out all other treats, dinner scraps,etc..vet told me slightest thing could trigger another episode.keep her on a strict diet.the food is very expensive but worth every penny healthwise to your dog and in cutting future vet bills john

In answer to John, Niceah had been prescribed 20 mgs. of pred. every 12 hrs. but over one weekend had such a severe bout of diahrea, that the vet doubled her dosage. She is now down to to 10 mgs. every other day. I had to rush her the the emergency vet hospital yesterday. She has elevated liver values and a urinary tract/kidney infection, which the pred is suspect cause as far as lowering her immunities. I hope and pray this has not permanently damaged any of her organs. I am awaiting more test results.

my prayers are with you. i know just how you feel, they ran so many different tests on my husky even kept her for observation a couple times.when your dog recovers you should talk to your vet about the diet switch. i actually think switching my dogs diet to low allergen dog food saved her life, john

I so agree with you, John, about the husky diet!!!! I know now that allergies and IBD are common to huskies and had Niceah on the Merrick Wilderness blend which is exclusively for digestive problems. Apparently not As soon as she has fully recovered, I will cleanse her system for a full day go with my holistic adviser who tells me she has a blend that will work. If I may ask, what are you feeding your husky? Thank you so very much for taking the time to assist. If there is a second unrelated problem such as a disk, her health insurance will cover alternative therapies if administered by a vet. Robin
